University of South Carolina student suspended for racist-slur photo

A South Carolina college student who said “n-----s” were to blame for the campus’ poor Internet connection has been suspended, school officials said.

The University of South Carolina student is seen writing out a list of “reasons why USC WiFi blows” on a study room whiteboard in a shocking Snapchat photo that has gone viral.

The racial slur tops the unidentified white woman’s list, which also includes “incompetent” professors, “ratchets,” an overpopulated campus and parking.

“Racist and uncivil rhetoric have no place at the University of South Carolina,” the school’s president Harris Pastides said in a statement Friday.

85 college students tried to draw the Apple logo from memory. 84 failed.

Could you draw the ubiquitous Apple computer logo from memory? Probably not, as it turns out.

In a new study published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, UCLA psychologists found that almost none of their subjects could draw the logo correctly from memory. Out of 85 UCLA undergraduate students, only one correctly reproduced the Apple logo when asked to draw it on a blank sheet of paper. Fewer than half the students correctly identified the actual logo when they were shown it among a number of similar logos with slightly altered features.

Among the participants were 52 Apple users, 10 PC users and 23 students who used both Apple and PC products — but the findings did not differ between Apple and PC users.

How can this be, given that logos are designed to be simple, memorable and visually distinctive, and Apple’s logo is among the world’s most recognizable?

“People had trouble picking out the correct logo even when it was right in front of them,” said Alan Castel, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA and senior author of the study, who showed in 2012 that most people did not know the location of a bright red fire extinguisher near their office, even though they had walked by it hundreds or thousands of times.

can you draw it from memory? Or can you pick the right one from below? Draw it before looking.

Residents of town where Lucille Ball was raised are angry about ugly statue

Resident campaigns to have 'nightmare' statue of Lucille Ball removed

A 400-pound bronze Lucille Ball is making news around the globe faster than you can say "Vitameatavegamin."

The statue was commissioned by two local residents in the western New York village of Celoron, who wanted to honor the legendary comedienne in the town where she was raised, but now a Facebook group formed three years ago calling for the statue's replacement is gaining international attention with articles in the U.K.'s Daily Mail and elsewhere.

The group's owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is seeking public support for removal of the statue that was created by artist Dave Poulin in 2009, saying it doesn't look anything like Lucille Ball.

"Lucille Ball was one of the most talented, beautiful, funny women who ever appeared on television. A pioneer, a giant of television. My only goal is to have a sculpture of her in Jamestown which does her justice," the Facebook group's owner told us via email.

Jamestown, home to the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum & Center for Comedy, is Ball's birthplace, though she was raised in adjacent Celoron.

sexist behavior that got Bowling Green head basketball coach fired today, caught on cell phone

Earlier today, Bowling Green State University fired head basketball coach Chris Jans because of an incident that occurred at a local bar. Now, thanks to documents obtained from the university via an open records request, we know exactly why Jans was fired. According to witnesses, he sexually harassed several women while drunk in a bar, slapping one on the butt, pushing another’s head toward his crotch, and calling another a “bitch.”

The video above was sent to the university by a witness. That’s Jans slapping a woman on the butt. The person who shot the video also provided a description of the rest of Jans’s behavior to Bowling Green athletics director Christopher Kingston. ([Sic] throughout):

Bowling Green Basketball Coach Chris Jans Fired for Public Conduct, Allegedly Arising from a Bar Incident

Bowling Green head coach Chris Jans, who had 21 wins in his first season with the school, was fired today, as originally reported by Pete Thamel. It is an unexpected–and non-basketball-move. Bowling Green had perhaps their best season in the last 12 years in Jans’ first and only year. Jans was a hot assistant who worked with Gregg Marshall at Wichita State before taking the Bowling Green job.

The details of the conduct will certainly come out, but it appears to stem from a bar incident from a couple of weeks ago.

Qatar Forced A Bunch Of Migrant Workers To Run A Marathon to set Guinness world record

Not only is the Qatari government killing scores of (let’s not mince words) slaves in order to build the infrastructure necessary to host the 2022 World Cup, it also forced a bunch of them to participate in a state-sponsored “megamarathon” in an attempt to set a dopey Guinness World Record. Many of the laborers were reportedly forced to run while wearing jeans and flip-flops, or no shoes at all.

From the Doha News:

One runner who contacted Doha News after the event described the marathon as “one of the most disorganized and chaotic events I have ever had the displeasure of attending.”

That participant observed hundreds of men who appeared to be laborers, wearing jeans, flip-flops or running barefoot.

“Others were forced to walk several kilometers before the organizers obviously realized they would not finish, and so they were loaded back into their busses and sent away,” the runner said.

And from another runner who contacted Doha News:

“The worst part of all was that there was a large mass of laborers wearing jeans, flip flops and no proper running equipment… Some laborers tried to leave but were turned back and were yelled at that they need to stay and cross the line.”

non-profit launched to help people get rid of payday loans

New lending service helps people curb payday-loan debt

Minneapolis resident Sherry Shannon borrowed $140 from a payday lender to fund a repair on her car almost two years ago. Even though she tried to pay it off, the loan ballooned each month with interest and fees until it had more than doubled from the original amount.

"It was just a nightmare," Shannon said. "I didn't think I'd ever get out of this."

Shannon eventually received help from her church to pay off the debt, but consumer advocates say millions of borrowers across the country have found themselves in a similar situation.

That's spurred a nonprofit to launch a first-of-its-kind lending service that aims to help consumers stuck in a debt cycle at payday lending institutions. Exodus Lending started offering refinancing of payday loans this week.

-----

Exodus Lending grew out of concern about a payday lender named ACE Cash Express that moved into a building near Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis about three years ago. Opponents of payday lenders, including at least a dozen people wearing clerical collars, rallied outside that business on Holy Thursday to announce the launch of Exodus Lending.

-----

Other faith-based groups across the country have started similar projects to refinance payday loan debt, but Exodus is the only one that combines that effort with financial counseling, said Rao, the director.
