Would you work better in the supercubicle? Furniture company designs work lounge featuring privacy screen and foot rest in bid to help employees focus in an open office

Furniture company, Steelcase, has created the Brody WorkLounge
Lounges are designed to 'be good for your body and good for your brain'
Brody provides shelter from visual distractions with privacy screens while featuring cushion that adapts to each person's size
In recent years many companies have embraced open offices with about 70 per cent of U.S. offices having no or low partitions
A 2013 study revealed noise and privacy loss are the main source of workspace dissatisfaction

In recent years, many companies have embraced open offices with about 70 per cent of U.S. offices having no or low partitions, according to the International Facility Management Association.
However, a 2013 study revealed that workers are frustrated by the distractions in open offices which lead to poorer work performance, according to the Washington Post.
That study also found that nearly half of the surveyed workers in open offices said the lack of sound privacy proved to be a problem for them while more than 30 per cent complained about the lack of visual privacy.
Another study revealed that having a sense of privacy actually boosts performance.

Promposal’ pressure: A teen tradition gets pricey. $324 of $919 prom cost for the ask

A high school junior demolishing a bagel described the pressure.

“Yeah, it’s stressful, because you have to do it right,” he explained on his way to class at Yorktown High School in Arlington.

SATs? AP tests? College applications?
“And it’s gotta be big. I mean, BIG,” said one of his pals.

“And public. It has to be really public,” added another, and the weight of it all seemed to droop his slight shoulders a little more
What’s stressing out these 17-year-old peach-fuzz boys laden with backpacks and books and athletic bags?

Promposals. This is the phenomenon — celebrated in movies and Allstate car insurance commercials — in which teens ask each other to prom in increasingly elaborate and creative ways.

Sounds kind of cute and harmless. But here’s the thing that floored me this year: A study that Visa released this week on teen credit card spending revealed that the average prom costs $919 a couple, with $324 going toward the promposal. Crazy, right?

Aid starts coming to Nepal after quake kills 1,865

The quake will likely put a huge strain on the resources of this poor country best known for Everest, the highest mountain in the world. The economy of Nepal, a nation of 27.8 million people, relies heavily on tourism, principally trekking and Himalayan mountain climbing.

The world reacted with alacrity to the disaster, offering aid in the form of money, relief material, equipment, expertise and rescue teams.

In this photo released by China's Xinhua …
Among the first to move in was Nepal's giant neighbor India, with which it has close political, cultural and religious ties. Nepal is the world's only Hindu nation, and majority of Indians are Hindus although it does not have an official religion.

Indian air force planes landed Sunday with 43 tons of relief material, including tents and food, and nearly 200 rescuers, India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said. The planes were returning to New Delhi with Indian nationals who were stranded in Kathmandu. More aid flights were planned for Sunday.

'Apes were never meant to drive so stop.' writes nurse to her African American neighbors

A mother has been arrested for referring to her African-American neighbors as 'apes' during a dispute over a parking space.
Eva Chapin, 34, from West Linn, Oregon, was booked into jail after she left a string of offensive post-it notes on the door of the family home.
The qualified nurse referred to the residents, who are believed to have roots in Ghana, as 'n*****' but wrote: 'I am not racist'.

One of the notes, seen by KATU, read: 'Apes were never meant to drive so stop.'
Another said: 'I've been here 22 years and no [expletive] and now you. U made me hate [expletive] now.'

'I'm not racist,' one of the notes allegedly said, 'but I can see how someone can become [sic] hating [expletive]. You did this. There were no [expletive] in W.L. until u came.'

'Freddie Gray was me'

“If I’d been dropped two inches to the left, then Freddie Gray was me,” says Abdul Salaam. The 36-year-old mental health executive from north-east Baltimore unbuttons his collar to show deep, dark scarring on his left shoulder from the time he was beaten by three Baltimore police officers in front of his child.

“It was 1 July, 2013, 6.37 pm,” he says.

Salaam was approaching his driveway after grocery shopping for a family barbecue when an officer pulled him out of the car and threw him against a gate. They slammed him on the concrete five times, and then proceeded to punch and kick him. His three-year-old began screaming, officers threatened to send his son to social services, while Salaam lay on the floor, hog-tied.

He pleaded with them to call his mother, who is a judge in New Jersey. To this day he says he doesn’t know why he was targeted.

Salaam was charged with attempting to elude an officer, the use of a handheld phone while driving, and driving without a seatbelt. After a brief stint in hospital where he was treated for chipped bones and gashes, he spent 48 hours in jail, and was later released without charge. Salaam is now suing the police commissioner for damages.

An investigation by the Baltimore Sun in September revealed the city had paid out $5.7m in lawsuits alleging police brutality against citizens since 2011. The staggering figure underlines the issue at hand, although Baltimore’s powerful police union argue that as the cases were settled out of court, facts in certain incidents have not been established.

But Natalie Finegar, Baltimore’s deputy district public defender says it is a “daily occurrence” for her clients to describe some sort of mishandling by the police. They range from so-called “jump outs” where officers spring from patrol cars and shake down a suspect to, more infrequently, allegations of serious assaults.

“It’s a cultural problem. I’ve been in this business for 20 years this problem has been growing. I think that sociologists can try to figure out the root causes of it and you see things tossed out there. But really there’s a sense that police are just not part of the community, either professionally or personally,” said Finegar.

Cops Kill Man for Refusing to ID as He Dropped Off Stray Cat to Animal Shelter

Cops Kill Man for Refusing to ID as He Dropped Off Stray Cat to Animal Shelter, Police Remain Silent
What was a seemingly selfless act of kindness would subsequently end with Lawrence being fatally gunned down by a cop.

Dothan, Ala. – In late December of 2014, Robert Earl Lawrence, 30, in an act of compassion, took a stray cat to the Dothan Animal Shelter. What was a seemingly selfless act of kindness would subsequently end with Lawrence being fatally gunned down by a cop.

Almost four months after that fateful day, police have provided the public with no more answers than were given the day after the killing. They have maintained a blanket of virtual silence surrounding the incident.

As we reported previously, the staff at the shelter, rather than simply accepting the cat, proceeded to demand that Lawrence show government issued identification. Per shelter policy, they demanded Lawrence show ID, prior to being allowed to leave, according to information released by police immediately after the shooting.

Lawrence showed them a notarized legal identification in the form of an affidavit, rather than the standard Department of Motor Vehicle issued ID card. In what would prove to be a fatal move, shelter employees refused to accept his form of ID and called the police.

Immediately upon arrival, the police began to force Lawrence to show his ID, eventually attempting to arrest him. In an apparent struggle, Lawrence was fatally shot by the officer in the abdomen, according to police.

Cop Ruptures Man’s Spleen as Fellow Officers Take Pics and Laugh

Robert Liese was in jail after he says a friend left him with a $60 bar tab that he was unable to pay. Besides being drunk, not once did Liese ever pose a threat to officers. In fact, he peacefully offered Delio his hands to be brought to jail after knowing that he was not going to be able to pay.

But Liese says that Delio didn’t care that he was nice and then kicked the handcuffed man in the stomach as he was loading him into the squad car.

Once in jail, Liese headbutted the door because he was upset and injured, and he was trying to get the attention of someone besides the officers who were outside of the door ridiculing him.

Officer Delio, who apparently wanted to take out more frustrations on the restrained man, then walked into the cell and kneed him in the stomach so hard, that it ruptured his spleen.

The pain was so great that Liese was immobilized. Delio picks the man up like a ragdoll and laughably yells to Liese, “stop resisting.”

---

Sgt. Michael Faulkner reported to internal affairs that Liese not only didn’t ask for medical attention, but that he refused it.

Unlike Sgt. Faulkner, however, the video does not lie. Not five, not ten, but at least twenty times Liese can be heard on video begging for medical attention.

A random act of violence, and a random act to help out

One evening not too long ago, a young man shoved his girlfriend to the street with such force that I heard the crack of her head against the pavement from across the street.

I was standing at the corner of Polk and Pine, waiting for a bus. There were six or seven other people who saw it happen — it was 6:30 p.m., the sky was still light, and there was a short line outside of the restaurant that the couple had just left.

----!!!!!!!

This particular couple, who looked to be in their late 20s, didn’t seem to be fazed. They’d probably practiced this horrible dance before. The young man straightened the eyeglasses on his nose and walked away. He looked a little nervous for the first few steps, because all of the passersby were jumping to avoid him. Then he eased into his stride and continued with confidence, like he’d just stepped out to pick up some milk.

The young woman stayed on the ground for a few moments. It was as if there were a radioactive circle around her. The witnesses had been terrified of her boyfriend, but none of them wanted to get close to her, either.

Ever wondered what would happen if you showed a monkey the middle finger?

Ever wondered what would happen if you showed a monkey the middle finger?

Surely, they wouldn't understand the sentiment behind the gesture, right? Wrong.

And this clip shows how one man had to learn that lesson the hard way.

In the footage, the pedestrian is walking past the monkey when he appears to stick up his middle finger.
