family is getting online threats over this photograph

Wisconsin mom is receiving threats online over a Batman-themed family photograph taken on railroad tracks.

Roxanne Daly is married to a man who loves the “Caped Crusader,” and for Father’s Day, she wanted to celebrate his enthusiasm for the superhero.

Roxanne hired a photographer to take a Batman family portrait. Her husband, Mike, dressed as the Dark Night and their son, Nick, as Robin. Roxanne played the part of the damsel in distress. The photographer staged the shoot on railroad tracks with Roxanne tied up in rope and Batman and Robin coming to her rescue.

Roxanne posted the image online and it quickly went viral receiving over 200,000 likes. And then the mom started receiving emails from people who were outraged that she put her son in danger by photographing him on railroad tracks. Many pointed out that they need authorization to be on the tracks and were promoting illegal activity.

“Some people posted our address online, making threats that they would come in the middle of the night,” Mike told ABC.

J. Crew exec who celebrated after mass firings, taunted, partied and jumped for joy.. fired!

http://nypost.com/2015/06/17/j-crew-exec-brags-about-surviving-hunger-games-layoffs/
Alejandro Rhett, vice president of men’s merchandising, personally delivered the bad news to several workers who were among the 175 layoffs at the struggling company on June 10, sources told The Post.
Rhett then hightailed it from J.Crew’s East Village headquarters to the Linen Hall bar, where he and other still-employed colleagues threw back drinks, the photos show.
In one shot, Rhett and a female pal literally jumped for joy, with the executive hoisting a drink in his right hand and pointing his left finger to the sky, “Number One”-style.

http://fashionweekdaily.com/heard-alejandro-rhett-fired-from-j-crew
The Daily heard from a reliable source that Alejandro Rhett, the vice president of men’s merchandising at J.Crew, was fired late Thursday afternoon after Instagram posts where he mocked fellow employees that had just been laid off landed him on the cover of The New York Post with the headline “J. Cruel.” J.Crew neither confirmed nor denied the firing.

J.Crew, which is struggling financially, laid off 175 employees (around 10 percent of its staff) and replaced head of women’s design Tom Mora with Madewell alum Somsack Sikhounmuong on June 10th. Rhett, a 32-year-old Georgetown University alum and Williamsburg resident, broke the bad news to members of his team, then hightailed it to nearby East Village bar Linen Hill and posed for photos that were hashtagged “#hungergames” and “#maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavor,” referring to the kill-or-be-killed plot of The Hunger Games. Three other fellow J.Crew employees, Julie Stamos, Vanessa de Jesus, and retail men’s merchandiser Andrew Ruth, also took part in the undeniably insensitive Instagram posts, and their future with the company is likely in jeopardy.

A J.Crew representative provided The Daily with the following statement: “We do not condone this behavior in any way. Individuals’ actions do not represent the culture of our company–this is not who we are. The tough decisions we made last week were not something we took lightly. We do our best to make decisions with care & compassion for all of our associates.”

Iowa Supreme Court allows telemedicine abortion program to go on
Fri Jun 19, 2015 9:02pm IST

(New story adds quote from ruling and reactions to decision)

By Brendan Pierson

June 19 (Reuters) - The Iowa Supreme Court has rejected a state rule requiring doctors to see abortion patients in person, ruling that a regional Planned Parenthood unit may continue administering abortion-inducing medications using remote video technology.

The unanimous decision by six justices released on Friday said the rule violated the state's constitution and placed an "undue burden" on women seeking abortions because Planned Parenthood had only three clinics and that many women would need to drive hundreds of miles to reach the clinics.

The rule was passed in July 2013 by the Iowa Board of Medicine, which regulates the practice of medicine in the state, requiring doctors to physically be with patients when they administer abortion-inducing drugs. The rule effectively banned telemedicine abortion, in which a doctor instructs a patient to take the drugs over a two-way video connection.

In September 2013 Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, which has been administering telemedicine abortions in Iowa since 2008, sued the Iowa Board of Medicine claiming that the board had acted out of an improper political motive.

Gov Baker apologizes for confused flag remarks

Governor Charlie Baker apologized on Thursday for remarks he made earlier in the day defending the rights of state capitols to fly the Confederate flag, initially calling it a matter of “tradition.”

Baker said in an early-afternoon radio interview that states should be entitled to decide whether to fly the Confederate flag at their capitols, laying out a brief argument for local government. But he later backtracked and said he believed the controversial symbol should be removed.

In a telephone interview on Thursday evening, Baker said he had “heard from some friends of mine.” Their message, he said: “Basically: What were you thinking?”

“I take my job as governor of 100 percent of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts very seriously, and as I said, I’m sorry if I didn’t do a particularly good job representing that today,” Baker told the Globe on the Thursday evening call arranged hastily by aides.

One of America's biggest grocery chains is on the brink of death

Source: sfgate

A&P is considering filing for bankruptcy, Bloomberg reports.
The 156-year-old chain was once America's largest grocer with more than 15,000 locations.
Now, it has fewer than 400 stores and it's struggling to stay in operation.
"Bids for A&P were due last month as part of an auction for the company, but no viable offers for the entire chain were received," Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with the situation. "That means the stores could be sold piecemeal, marking the end of what was once the largest U.S. grocer."
A&P told Bloomberg, however, that "No decision has been made regarding a particular outcome, and it would be inaccurate and irresponsible to suggest otherwise."

Georgia zoo flooding: what to do if you encounter a tiger

A white tiger that escaped from a zoo in Tbilisi after heavy flooding mauled a man to death on Wednesday, and on Thursday authorities in the Georgian capital said they were still looking for another tiger and a hyena.

Heavily armed government officers were on constant patrol on Thursday morning, as jumpy residents called in at the slightest noise or strange movement outside. But what should they do if they find themselves confronted with a tiger?

Based on the experiences of forest rangers in India’s national parks, Vicky Flynn, the campaign manager of TigerTime and a veteran of travels through tiger territory, has this advice:

Do not run. Like all cats, tigers enjoy a chase. In Bandhavgarh national park, an elephant was startled by tigers in the long grass and threw its mahout (rider) to the ground before running away. Alone in the tall grass and knowing that there were at least three tigers in the grass nearby, the mahout fought his instincts and slowly edged backwards, one tiny step at a time, out of the grass. It took him two hours, but he lived to tell the tale.

Do not approach the tiger. Tigers, especially captive tigers, will be scared by the unusual setting and will probably be highly agitated. Stay away.

Get yourself somewhere high up. Tigers are not good climbers and will generally not follow you up a tree.

Stand up tall. Tigers do not distinguish between a crouched human, a warthog or a deer. This is why so many villagers collecting wood from tiger reserves have been attacked.

Do not antagonise the tiger. Upon finding a tiger in his home, an old man in Bandhavgarh died trying to hit it away with a stick. Tigers will defend themselves and very few will walk away when attacked.

Do not urinate in a tiger’s territory. Tigers mark their territories and if you do the same, the tiger would see you as a threat.

Stay away from injured or old tigers. They are more likely to attack and they come into contact with humans more regularly as they seek out easy prey, often domestic livestock.

Rescue dogs seem to smile and stick out their tongues in expressive images

All three of Elke's dogs are from a rescue home and had narrowly avoided death.
Elke said: 'All my three dogs are rescue dogs from Spain. Noodles was saved from a kill shelter in the South of Spain.
'Scout was found with her siblings next to her dead mother somewhere in a field near Zaragoza. And Ioli's mother arrived in very bad condition and pregnant in Germany.'

Gov. Bobby Jindal Denies Clemency to Man Serving 13 Years for Possessing Two Joints

Gov. Bobby Jindal Denies Clemency to Man Serving 13 Years for Possessing Two Joints
More cruelty in the war on drugs.
By Tony Papa / AlterNet June 17, 2015

Bernard Noble, an individual serving 13 years for possessing two marijuana joints applied for clemency and was recently denied. The reason behind the denial was he had not yet served 10 years in prison. Bernard's sentence is a prime example of the draconian nature of the marijuana laws in many states across the country. In stark contrast to Louisiana, many states have decriminalized possession of marijuana for personal use, with the offense being punishable by a fine and with no threat of jail time.

This is truly a case of injustice and the vehicle of clemency is totally appropriate here. But for some reason Gov. Jindal and his administration refuses to show compassion and follow the recent lead of President Obama who granted clemency to twenty two prisoners this March.

By granting those twenty two prisoners their freedom President Obama displayed his administration's attempt to reduce mass incarceration and roll back mandatory minimum sentencing laws. The clemencies granted were the result of recent improvements in the commutation process by the Justice Department which included a fast tracking program that implemented a stream lining of the application process to prisoners that were eligible under newly set criteria.

city of Tacoma discourages homeless with big boulders

The city of Tacoma is taking heat for the way it cracked down on loitering and crime near the downtown library.

It cost taxpayers thousands of dollars to place boulders along a single strip of grass to discourage people from gathering.

But now the outrage may force the city to change gears.

“Your first reaction is if this is the answer, it was a pretty bad question to begin with,” said Tacoma resident Scott Goddard.

City officials said it was trying to find a way to address years of complaints about lewd behavior and drug activity along Earnest S Brazill Street and Tacoma Avenue South. The strip of grass sits directly across the street from the downtown library.

“They’re just tired of us,” said former homeless woman Cathleen. “They plugged up this area so no more homeless can lay down there.”

The city placed the rocks near the library because there was a “growing feeling that it was not a safe place,” he said.

DeForrest said he thinks the tactic has worked.

“The fact that last week there were people who had lunch on them tells you right there. Those people weren’t having lunch there the week before that,” DeForrest said.

Rob McNair-Huff, who works nearby and attended last week’s boulder protest, said the people who once congregated on the parking strip have moved a few blocks uphill to the west.
