Dr. Ben Carson is seventh day adventist. that alone should give him empathy towards

Folks in religions outside the American mainstream

Adventist History

Carson’s rise in the polls as he seeks the Republican presidential nomination has spurred interest in the church that has shaped so much of his life. If he continues to gain momentum, Americans are bound to have questions about the Seventh-day Adventists, just as they did about Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith and, at another time, John F. Kennedy’s Catholicism.

Adventists share many of the ideological tenets of evangelical Christianity. Carson the Adventist is another voice in a large field of Christian conservative presidential candidates, such as Baptists Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz and Catholic Rick Santorum. By some estimates, there are 1.2 million Adventists in the U.S.

The Seventh-day Adventist movement emerged contemporaneously with evangelical groups during the Second Great Awakening, an American religious revival in the first half of the 19th century. Many of these movements subscribed to millennialism, the belief in an imminent second coming of Christ, which would signal the end of the world. William Miller, whose followers were known as “Millerites,” predicted that the return of Jesus Christ would occur in October 1844.

When Miller turned out to be incorrect, Adventism arose as a response to what became known as “The Great Disappointment.” A Millerite follower, Ellen White, claiming that she had witnessed a prophetic vision of the Ten Commandments, composed the writings that became central documents of Adventism. White wrote about the need to restore biblical purity through strengthening adherence to certain commandments, especially the observance of the Sabbath. That’s why Adventists hold the Sabbath on Saturday instead of Sunday: In the original Hebrew Bible, the Sabbath is a “seventh day” observance. (In secular terms, the arrangement depends on the semantics of what constitutes the “seventh day”; i.e., whether you think the week starts on Monday or Sunday.)

“Saturday is the Sabbath,” Carson says. “It was later changed by man.”

creator of Univers typeface dies at age 87

There is perhaps no single typographer whose work can be found in such a diverse range of applications. Adrian Frutiger, who died last week at age 87, created typefaces that make you feel at home in every single place you see them, from subway stations to your computer keyboard.

The Swiss typographer was born in 1928 and worked as a compositor at a printer while dabbling in calligraphy, drawing letterforms in his free time. Eventually Frutiger went to work at the Paris foundry Deberny Et Peignot. This was the time when Helvetica and Futura were all the rage, spurring an age of sans serif, Swiss-inspired type. Frutiger was told to build a typeface in this vein, and created Univers.

that Houston cop that was killed at the gas station.. his mistress was in the car

ABC13 reporters on the scene August 28, the night Goforth was killed, talked to witnesses who saw a woman in dressy clothing crying over the deputy's body.

Other eyewitnesses said she called Goforth her "best friend," while over the body that evening.

Sheriff's officers made no mention of such a witness the night of the murder, and abc13 reporters were unable to find her in the following days.

---!!----

The crime is after all on video but Androphy suggests injecting eyewitnesses who have personal connections to the victim, may cloud what until now seemed to be an easy case for prosecutors.

"In a criminal case all you need is reasonable doubt," Androphy said. "The state could have done a better job of investigating and asking this person questions up front if this person had an affair or have a relationship with the deceased."

Investigators had the unfortunate duty of informing Goforth's widow of the court document before it was entered into the public record.

Goforth's killing made national headlines when he was murdered. Hickman called the killing a "cold-blooded assassination" and criticized the 'black lives matter' movement.

man arrested for writing "F—k your s–-y town b–—s” on traffic ticket payment form.

"F—k your s–-y town b–—s” wrote Willian Barboza on a traffic ticket form accompanying his payment for a 2012 speeding ticket that he mailed to — of all places — the town of Liberty, New York. To boot, Mr. Barboza had also scratched out “Liberty” on the form replacing it with “Tyranny.”

But when Liberty court clerks received the payment, they perceived the message as a potential threat and referred it to a judge. As a result, Mr. Barboza’s ticket payment was rejected and a court date was set — at which point he was arrested and taken into custody for a violation of the state’s former “aggravated harassment” statute.

Mr. Barboza later sued, alleging that the arrest violated his First Amendment rights.

In a ruling announced Tuesday by the New York Civil Liberties Union, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Barboza, U.S. District Judge Cathy Seibel determined that the lawsuit can proceed. She ruled that lawyers for Mr. Barboza will be able to argue that the town of Liberty was at fault for failure to adequately train its police officers about the First Amendment.

Judge Seibel also determined that the town’s assistant district attorney could potentially be held liable for the violation of Mr. Barboza’s rights, as he was the one who ordered two police officers to arrest Mr. Barboza at his court hearing.

Cop convicted: pulled down pants of driver and examined his buttocks & testicles with a flashlight.

BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) - An Illinois State trooper is convicted of a misdemeanor after a judge reviews the trooper's dash cam video.

Corey Alberson was accused of pulling down the pants of an innocent man during a 2012 traffic stop in East St. Louis. Alberson contended the man and his car fit the description of a drug suspect.

The videotape surfaced after an Illinois State Police supervisor was conducting a routine review of dash cam video. That supervisor felt the video warranted charges.

A judge who reviewed the video found Alberson guilty of aggravated assault. He has been suspended without pay, and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Prosecutors called Alberson a “bully with a badge” who stopped Anthony Campbell on Jan. 21, 2012, for an unspecified traffic infraction on North Ninth Street in East St. Louis. Prosecutors say Alberson had Campbell undo his pants and then used a flashlight to visually examine Campbell’s buttocks and testicles of Campbell.

“ ... (Alberson) clearly gestures in a commanding manner to Mr. Campbell and only then does Mr. Campbell open his belt and the front of his pants,” Fiss wrote in his verdict. “The court finds Mr. Campbell’s testimony that he did not give (Alberson) permission or consent to search his person to be credible.”

Fiss also found that there was no officer safety issue at the time the search was conducted.

Campbell testified that he felt “disrespected and insulted,” but never complained about the search. The search came to light when ISP Major Christopher Trame did a routine review of the dash-cam videos and discovered it. Trame testified that he was “shocked” by what he saw. Trame made a complaint.

Mob of tourists disturbs sea turtles nesting in Costa Rica, some return to sea without laying eggs

Tourists posed for pictures and stood in the way of sea turtles attempting to nest on a beach in Costa Rica.

Hundreds of sea turtles make their way to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, to lay their eggs every year, according to the Tico Times.

Authorities said that tourists stood in the way of turtles and caused several to turn back into the ocean without completing their nesting ritual, Leonel Delgado, Secretary of Sitraminae, told La Nación. Tourists touched the turtles, stood on their nests and physically blocked their way, according to Delgado.

The flood of tourists was caused in part by drought plaguing the northern region, the Times reported. Typically, rivers overflow during the rainy season and the refuge is inaccessible to large groups of people.

The Secretary of Environment is investigating the incident and why authorities were unable to "control the tourism that hampered and limited the natural process of spawning of turtles," according to a post on the Environment Ministry's Workers Union (SITRAMINAE) Facebook page.

---
The turtles did not want the company. Scared off by the thousands of tourists massed along Ostional Beach on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, snapping selfies and perching their children on the turtles’ backs, the ancient reptiles simply turned around and retreated into the sea.

Devoted dog stands guard for a week beside her trapped friend (both home and ok now)

Phoebe was found perched on some concrete rubble that held her out of the water. VIPP

MISSING DOGS FOUND!!! HOORAY FOR TILLIE...and a HUGE HANKIE ALERT. We are overjoyed to report that after being missing for a week, Tillie and Phoebe are now safe after being found deep in a ravine off monument road - with Phoebe being stuck in an old cistern. VIPP volunteers have been helping search for the dogs and today we received a call from a community member reporting that for the past few days a "reddish" dog had been coming up to them when they were out on their property and then promptly heading back into a ravine. So with a needle in the haystack hope we made our way into the ravine and after a bit of searching, finally heard that sweet sound we have been waiting for all week. A small one-woof response when we called out "Tillie." A few minutes later we found her laying beside an old cistern with her head resting on the concrete wall. Heart sinking...we knew that meant Phoebe was inside the cistern and every breath was held and every doggie prayer offered that the peek over the rim would somehow find her safe. And gratefully... this time we have a happy ending with dear Phoebe found perched on some concrete rubble that held her out of the water. For nearly a week Tillie stayed by her side with the exception of the few minutes of each day when she went for help. A huge thanks to Joe Curiel for realizing something was up and a round of applause to the awesome and amazing Miss Tillie. A true friend and a humbling example of the power of love.

After Watching These Cops Bully an Innocent Combat Vet, You’ll Know Why People are Upset with Cops

After Watching These Cops Bully an Innocent Combat Vet, You’ll Know Why People are Upset with Cops
The two men said they were simply sitting on a curb outside of a cellphone store after business hours, waiting for a ride, when approached by the officer.

Six Apopka police officers are under investigation after video was posted online showing cops roughing up and berating two men who were simply waiting for a ride to work.

A video of the incident shows extremely aggressive and unnecessary actions by the officers involved, which are indicative of the increased calls for police oversight and accountability by the American public.

The two men said they were simply sitting on a curb outside of a cellphone store after business hours, waiting for a ride, when approached by the overly aggressive officer. Now one of the men has spoken out, claiming that he feels he was racially profiled.

“If you’re African-American, you’re going to be profiled,” Niblak said.

Initially, one of the men can be heard politely explaining to the officer that he is waiting for a ride, stating,

“I understand that ma’ am. I’m just sitting here waiting for my boss. I just wanna go to work. That’s it.”

3 year old found walking on highway at midnight

Police: 3-year-old found walking on California freeway alone
Updated 2:13 am, Tuesday, September 15, 2015

CHUALAR, Calif. (AP) — A Monterey County woman was arrested after her 3-year-old was found walking alone on a highway shortly after midnight.

The Salinas Californian reports (http://bit.ly/1UQ7p3K ) Monday that the child was found by a semi-truck driver on the shoulder of the highway early Sunday, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

The child was wearing only shorts and socks and was on the verge of hypothermia.

He was transported to a hospital. When deputies found the mother, 39-year-old Diane Aguilar, she said she had sent her 10-year-old to look for the younger child on his bike.

Aguilar then drove around in her car with her neighbor, leaving her 5-year-old alone. She didn't call 911.
