How do you rescue a 1,000 pound polar bear caught in a fishing line? (sedate from helicopter 1st)

How do you rescue a 1,000 pound polar bear caught in a fishing line? (unsurprisingly, the answer is VERY carefully)
The male polar bear became wrapped up in the fishing net while on the island near Kaktovik, Alaska
Biologists and local volunteers sedated the bear and then untangled him

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3225084/Saved-1-000-pound-polar-bear-entangled-fishing-net-rescued-remote-Arctic-island.html

The agency posted pictures of the bear's dilemma while explaining how the group, as well biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local volunteers from the community of Kaktovik, came to the creature's rescue.
First, the bear was tranquilized with a dart from a helicopter. Then volunteers in fishing boats held up the half-ton bear so he wouldn't drown as he became sedated.
'Once the bear was sedated, the biologists worked to quickly untangle the bear from the net and, after determining it appeared uninjured from its ordeal, released it back into the wild,' the agency concluded the drama on its page.
'A great effort by all to keep this magnificent animal in the wild.'

-------

A harrowing few hours for a polar bear trapped in a fishing net had a happy ending when biologists and locals teamed up to free the bear.

The polar bear, a 1,000 pound male, was found ensnared in the net off an island in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea. Biologists from the U.S. Geological Society and U.S. Fish and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shot the bear with a tranquilizer dart from a helicopter. Locals from nearby Kaktovik joined the effort, using boats to buoy the bear, preventing him from drowning as the tranquilizers took effect.

Biologists then worked quickly to untangle the bear. After insuring the bear had suffered no injuries, he was released to the wild.

The USGS documented the incident on Facebook.

Christian moviemakers opt for black cast after glut of whitewashed faith films

Last year, a flood of faith films starring white actors led many to charge that Hollywood was standing in the way of racial progress. But religious audiences can witness a stark departure from this troubling trend when “War Room” hits theaters on Aug. 28.
The fifth feature film produced by successful Christian moviemakers Alex and Stephen Kendrick tells a story about the power of prayer. It does so with an almost entirely African-American cast, including New York Times best-selling Christian author Priscilla Shirer, in her movie debut.
“There is an element to the way we tell this story that has power and desperation that would be different if we tried to tell it any other way,” Alex Kendrick said of his decision to opt for a black cast. He says when executives from their distributor (Sony’s Affirm Films) viewed it for the first time, they responded, “If this had been told with a different race, it would be a different movie.”
“War Room” arrives at a time when racial tensions in America have intensified as a result of police brutality cases and the racially motivated slaying of black worshippers by a white shooter in Charleston, S.C. Those involved with the film say they don’t believe the timing of its release is a coincidence, and they think that the message of “War Room” might have the power to usher in reconciliation in America.

A sheriff in Virginia said 'Christians feel their beliefs are being trampledHowever, this month, dozens of other police forces chose to unveil the sign on their patrol cars elsewhere in the country.
Police Chief Adrian Garcia said he decided to add the decals in response to recent attacks on law enforcement personnel that have received broad attention, including the August 28 killing of Darren Goforth, a sheriff's deputy who was shot 15 times at a Houston-area gas station.

'I think with all the assaults happening on officers across the country ... it's time we get back to where we once were,' Garcia told the Red River Sun newspaper.

New Program Takes Rare Approach of Treating Homeless People Like Human Beings—And It Works

New Program Takes Rare Approach of Treating Homeless People Like Human Beings—And It Works
A new program moves homeless encampments into a safe, clean space with food, laundry, showers and case workers who care.
By Emily Wilson / AlterNet September 2, 2015

Alan Nethe, who spent 15 years on the street, answers succinctly when asked what he likes about the new Navigation Center in San Francisco’s Mission District.

“Everything,” he says. “What’s not great about it? You’ve got food, laundry, showers, and everybody in here cares about the program and how it runs.”

It’s not just the kitchen, community room, laundry, and showers that make the center unique. Here, in the site of a former high school, city officials are trying something that hasn’t been done anywhere else: moving in whole homeless encampments. That means couples or communities that have formed can stay together. By providing a place to store their belongings, an area for their pets and no curfew so people can come and go, they are removing barriers that keep people out of shelters, says Bevan Dufty, the head of Mayor Ed Lee’s Housing Opportunity, Partnerships and Engagement or HOPE team.

It seems to be working. The controller’s office works with the center to keep track of what happens with the clients and where they go, and the majority of those who leave go on to housing. Jennifer Friedenbach, director of the Coalition on Homelessness in San Francisco, says she was concerned that law enforcement would use the center as a reason to harass homeless people remaining on the street, but that hasn’t happened. (Although San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has recently gotten flack for a crackdown on the homeless ahead of the Super Bowl.)

Things are looking especially dry at Big Bear Lake in California, as seen in this Aug. 24, 2015, photo. California cities cut water use by a combined 31 percent in July, exceeding the governor's statewide mandate to conserve, officials said Thursday, Aug. 27. The strong water conservation figures show California residents are beginning to understand the dire need to cut back in a fourth year of drought, Felicia Marcus, chair of the State Water Resources Control Board, said.

west point cadets put hard objects in their pillows and draw blood during annual pillow fight

Photos and video have circulated on social media showing the Aug. 20 brawl, which The New York Times reports West Point did not confirm until Thursday.

Lt. Col. Christopher Kasker tells the newspaper the annual fight is organized by first-year students as a way to build camaraderie after a grueling summer of training to prepare them for plebe life.

He says upperclassmen overseeing the fight required cadets to wear helmets, but video shows many did not. Some cadets swung pillowcases believed to be packed with their helmets.

Kasker says 24 cadets suffered concussions but all have since returned to duty. No cadets have been punished.

In August, an annual pillow fight between freshmen cadets at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, left 30 injured and 24 concussed, the New York Times reports, after some cadets apparently stuffed helmets in their pillowcases.

The “plebe pillow fight” is an annual tradition, extending back to at least 1897, marking the end of a long seven weeks of basic training during which time cadets are not supposed to speak to each other. At the end of their training, West Point cadets build fellowship within their class by beating each other with pillows.

According to the Times, the fight left one cadet with a broken leg and others with dislocated shoulders. Cadets speaking on the condition of anonymity said one was knocked unconscious, taken to a hospital, and has not yet returned, but an academy spokesman, Lt. Col. Christopher Kasker, said all cadets had returned to duty.

Three people are claiming ownership of this small brown chicken

Three people are claiming ownership of the small brown chicken that fouled up rush-hour traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area earlier this week.

The Oakland Tribune reports (http://bayareane.ws/1QdD8Wx ) Friday that the Oakland Animal Shelter has the chicken that strutted between cars at the Bay Bridge toll plaza early Wednesday.

She was eventually captured by the California Highway Patrol.

Animal Services Director Rebecca Katz says people claiming ownership of the chicken, named Chip in a nod to the CHP, need to come to the facility with proof, such as previous photos of the famous foul.

Two rescue groups are also interested in Chip.

Oregonians putting 'No Californians' stickers on for sale signs

Oregonians are fed up with the rising home prices in Portland and seem to think Californians are to blame.

"No Californians" stickers are mysteriously popping up on for sale signs in front homes that are on the market.

The stickers resemble a no smoking sign with a silhouette of the Golden State slashed out in red.

Realtor Lori Fenwick told The Oregonian that she learned about the trend when one of her buyers sent her a photo of a sign with one of the stickers. When Fenwick posted image on Facebook. she immediately heard from colleagues who had spotted the same sticker on signs.

declawed abandoned tiger cub found wandering around Calif. neighborhood

look at the size of those paws!!

An abandoned tiger cub was found wandering the streets of a California neighborhood on Thursday.

The three-month old male was turned into the Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto, Calif., by a woman who said she found the cub wandering through her Hemet, Calif., neighborhood.

The shelter posted a video of the cub drinking water on Facebook. The group said, "as an open admission shelter we [accept] all animals including this tiger found in our community."

Department of Fish and Wildlife later transferred the cub 70 miles to an exotic animal sanctuary in Phelan, a little over an hour from Los Angeles.

The cub is suffering from a hernia and was declawed, according to Joel Almquist, the owner of Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary, where the cub is now staying. Almquist said when large cats are declawed the procedure involves cutting through bones, tendon and nerves.

"Declawing does a lot of damage to cats," Almquist told USA TODAY Network. He said the sanctuary plans on working with a reconstructive surgeon to ensure the cub does not have chronic pain.

----

"Zoos won't take tigers if they don't know the bloodline, so he will be living his life in a sanctuary," He said, adding, "hopefully here."
