(CNN) -- So how does a 17-year-old get ahold of numerous guns? According to news reports, John David LaDue allegedly possessed one, along with several other firearms. Police say they were part of the arsenal (which included illegal homemade bombs) that he allegedly planned to use to slaughter as many students as he could at his high school in rural Minnesota.

Thanks to a civilian tip and good police work, we narrowly escaped another mass shooting.

A friend of mine predicted that the United States would suffer probably 10 such shootings in 2014. I didn't want to believe him, but I knew it would be true.

It turns out we will suffer far more than 10. We've seen a shooting where an assailant targets multiple people somewhere in this country every week this year, according to the website Shootingtracker.com. Only a small number -- such as the recent FedEx shooting in Georgia, or those at Fort Hood, Texas, or Jewish facilities in Kansas -- will gain national attention.

Firstly, British people do have the ability to purchase firearms, but they are strictly controlled. It is not all that difficult to get a shotgun license if you live in the countryside, and I know people who legally own .22 rifles for the purpose of killing rabbits and wood pigeons on farmland. However, handguns were outlawed in 1997, and only the police and military are permitted to carry automatic weapons.

I do not want it to be any easier than it is now to legally purchase a gun, and I know very few people who do. I don't want to buy a gun because I have no need for one. More importantly, there are plenty of other people around who can't be trusted with a gun, and I want it to be as difficult as possible for them to buy guns.

I would be uncomfortable if it were made easier to buy firearms. The U.K. has one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the world, and I like it that way. Our society does not have any problems that would be solved by introducing more guns.

Superficially, it might seem like a nice idea to have a pistol on hand in case someone ever breaks into my house in the middle of the night, but I'm not sure how much it would help. If the burglar knows I might have a gun, he's more likely to have one, too. He's also probably a lot more comfortable about pointing it at someone than I am. And for that, I would have to accept the responsibility of owning a gun and storing it safely where my children and visitors can't get at it. I've never had to deal with an intruder at my house, but there have been occasions when people have hurt themselves playing with my mountain bike or penknife after a few beers. Thank goodness that I don't have a gun.

After more than twenty years of trying, there’s no way to avoid the following conclusion: The gun manufacturers of America cannot be swayed by reason.

This past week alone, we saw just how true this statement has become.

On Tuesday morning, a gunman opened fire at a FedEx facility in Kennesaw, Georgia wounding six people before being shot and killed himself. Kennesaw is famous for being the Georgia town where every household is mandated to own at least one gun. Although the law is not officially enforced, it is estimated that roughly 50% of town residents do, in fact, own at least one firearm. This event follows last week’s Georgia bill that was signed into law which has become known as the “guns everywhere bill.” The bill gives Georgia residents the ability to take guns into public buildings such as bars, nightclubs, and libraries. Already, we have seen one crazed Georgia resident brandish his gun at a little league baseball game full well knowing that there was nothing the local police could do to stop him.

These events in Georgia follow this past weekend’s NRA convention in Indianapolis, an event that has become a prime opportunity for the rest of the country to see how delusional and paranoid the American gun lobby has become. Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart pointed out how utterly unreal the views were expressed by this year’s participants including comments from Sarah Palin, Marco Rubio, and Wayne LaPierre. There was even a promotional video expressing what has become the NRA’s rallying call since Sandy Hook: The absolute necessity for good guys to have guns. The video’s purpose was to serve as a recruitment tool for the NRA to add to its ever-growing ranks of over 5 million people.

An uncle who was paralyzed after being shot in 2010 took a bus to deliver a loaded revolver to his 14-year-old niece just before a fatal confrontation fueled by comments made on social media, Cook County prosecutors said Wednesday.

The uncle knew his niece planned to use the .38 Special to confront the onetime friend over a feud about a boy, prosecutors said. Endia Martin, 14, was fatally shot as she tried to run back inside her cousin’s home Monday afternoon in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Prosecutors revealed that a witness to the shooting had captured the entire incident on video with a cell phone and that the evidence was now in the hands of authorities.

The suspect’s uncle, Donnell Flora, 25, appeared in court Wednesday in a wheelchair, wiping his face with his hand as a judge told him he was being charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. He was ordered held on $3 million bail after prosecutors said he knew the niece planned to take the gun to a fight.

Mass murders led Colorado's governor to seek improvements in how the state handles potentially dangerous cases of mental illness, but Second Amendment advocates labeled the proposed legislation "another gun grab" and shrank its scope.

A bill nearing a Senate vote would accomplish one aim of the attempted reform. It would redefine who is dangerous enough to be held for treatment against their will — which supporters say is meant to clarify the process for mental health professionals.

Efforts to make the process easier for those professionals were jettisoned after gun-rights groups objected.

Yet even the scaled-down version remains under attack.

A Rockville gun store owner who said he would sell the nation’s first smart gun — even after a California gun store removed the weapon from its shelves to placate angry gun-rights activists — backed down late Thursday night after enduring a day of protests and death threats.

Andy Raymond, the co-owner of Engage Armament, a store known for its custom assault rifles, had said earlier this week that offering the Armatix iP1 handgun was a “really tough decision” after what happened to the Oak Tree Gun Club near Los Angeles. Oak Tree was lambasted by gun owners and National Rifle Association members who fear the new technology will be mandated and will encroach on Second Amendment rights.

Electronic chips in the gun communicate with a watch that can be bought separately. The gun cannot be fired without the watch.

Oak Tree denied having anything to do with the weapon, despite pictures of the gun for sale in its shop and a special firing range built just for the weapon.

FREDONIA, NY - Bail was set at $50,000 cash/ $100,000 bond on Tuesday morning for a Dunkirk man accused of having an illegal assault rifle.

Dennis A. Wallace, 36, of Van Buren Road appeared before Pomfret Town Judge Judge David Prince, where he pleaded not guilty. Wallace is due to appear back in court on May 2 for a preliminary hearing.

Wallace had previously been charged with Aggravated Harassment in the 2nd degree regarding an incident with his wife, for which an order of protection had been filed in Fredonia Village Court.

According to court documents, during a follow up investigation by Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputies and Fredonia Police on Sunday, Wallace was allegedly found to have been in possession of what court papers describe as a loaded, unregistered, self manufactured semi-automatic assault rifle,

A bill that requires domestic abusers subject to a restraining order to give up firearms and that expands weapons restrictions for those convicted of domestic assault or stalking overwhelmingly passed the Minnesota House on Wednesday.

"I know this bill will not save every life, but this is an action that I believe will save lives," said Rep. Dan Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, sponsor of the bill and a police officer in Cottage Grove.

Even die-hard Second Amendment defenders signed on.

"I find myself in a position to actually vote for a bill that has the word 'gun' in it," said Rep. David Dill, DFL-Crane Lake. "Domestic violence is not acceptable in any place, particularly in the state of Minnesota."

Episcopal churches in Middle and North Georgia have banned firearms from their sanctuaries following Gov. Nathan Deal’s approval of legislation that widely expands the state’s gun laws.

Bishop Robert Wright of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta issued the directive Monday, telling church leaders and parishioners that the only exception to the policy will be on-duty law enforcement officers.

“My judgment and this policy are based on the normative understanding of the teachings of Jesus as the Episcopal Church has received them,” Wright wrote in a letter about House Bill 60, which takes effect July 1. “This matter and I hope this policy afford us yet another opportunity to live the words we pray each week.”

Dubbed the “guns everywhere” legislation by opponents, HB 60 passed on the final day of this year’s state legislative session and expands where Georgians may legally carry firearms, including schools, bars and government buildings.
