New mask

July 28, 2020

Gimme! Gimme! I kin DOOO it!

Just remembering the “discussion” with a toddler insisting that he is able to pour the milk on his cereal. And standing back long enough to know that the mop was going to get a workout.

That scenario replays every time blotus goes solo to mumble a covid update. He’s every bit as capable as that toddler, but without the erudition. And it’s going to require one hell of a mop.

Holy effing s**t!

I don’t ordinarily look forward to pulmonary rehab sessions. But after hearing Jim Jordan ask Barr, “What’s more important, going to church or going to a protest?” — yeah, I’m outta here. Really going to need those exercises today. Ye gods.

Body language

There was some interesting body language in the capitol rotunda today, where people were gathered to honor John Lewis. Most of them loved him, respected him, considered him a friend. They were the ones whose hands were lifted to others, only to have those hands uncomfortably withdrawn, dropped to the side or wrung together. They were the ones who opened their arms and leaned toward one another, only to stop and drop back, shoulders drooping, heads slowly nodding.

They were the ones who are used to reaching out to touch those in need of comfort, and the masks reminded them that such expressions can’t happen right now, and the motions of holding back looked painfully awkward, that tactile denial adding to the shared grief; words that would otherwise be whispered were spoken from a distance, eyes meeting to embrace across the unnatural chasm. Their shared pain was palpable.

That said, not everyone was visibly discomfited by the constraints; Mitch McConnell’s only apparent discomfort seemed to arise from the brief forced proximity to so many who actually know how to give a damn. In that room in that sad hour, he was in the very small minority.

Watching the coverage from the Capitol

as John Lewis is brought in. Showing the members of Congress. Camera panned from Pelosi to McConnell, and my first thought was "What the hell is he doing there?" Sorry, but he's not capable of honoring anyone. Yeah, I know, it's his job, but yuck.

Denver forecast: meteorologist unemployed

A longtime Denver television weatherman is "no longer employed" since tweeting this:

Not to put too fine a point on it, but he's hardly the first to notice the resemblance. And his erstwhile employer, channel 9, is hearing from viewers; will be interesting to see if/how the station responds.

The Denver Post reported the story, but there's a paywall. The story was shared to some local papers, so you can read it here (no paywall until August):

Greeley man trying to shoot license plate hanging in his bedroom shot neighbor’s truck, home and pants

. . . Zogg admitted to having drank 14 shots of whiskey throughout the day, according to court records. He had to lean against a building to steady himself while talking with police.
. . .

Police counted seven exit holes in the east side of Zogg’s trailer. The victim showed police a bullet hole in the west side of his trailer. The bullet shot through the victim’s bedroom closet and became lodged in a pair of pants hanging in the closet. Police counted three bullet holes in the front and rear passenger doors of the truck, as well as bullet holes in the back passenger window and the front driver’s window.
