By STEVEN SHEPARD 06/15/16 05:33 AM EDT

Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in the 11 pivotal states likely to determine the outcome of this year’s presidential election, according to the debut of POLITICO’s Battleground States polling average.

As the 2016 general election begins, Clinton holds a 5-point overall advantage in the POLITICO Battleground States polling average over Trump, 44.8 percent to 39.8 percent. That lead extends to the state level: Clinton has the advantage in eight of the 11 individual swing states.

Donald Trump’s assault on our values

By Editorial Board June 13 at 7:32 PM

IT HAD not seemed possible, but Donald Trump descended this week to a new low of bigotry, fear-mongering and conspiracy-peddling.

Republican leaders who said last week that they expected a change in tone after Mr. Trump’s racist attacks on a California judge quickly received their answer. What can House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) or Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) possibly say now?

As the country mourned the wanton slaughter of 49 people early Sunday, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee took a victory lap, hinted darkly that President Obama is an enemy of the nation, libeled American Muslims and, in grotesque punctuation, finished up with a vindictive attack on the media.

Assault Weapons Must Be Banned

By Eugene Robinson
June 14, 2016

WASHINGTON -- The only reasonable response to the massacre in Orlando is to ban the sale of military-style assault weapons. All else, I'm afraid, is just noise.

An Islamic State sympathizer was able to go into a gun store days or weeks ago and buy both a pistol and an AR-15-style semiautomatic assault rifle, which he used to kill 49 men and women at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Had he been armed with the pistol alone, he still would have killed people -- but not so many. Keeping military-grade combat weapons out of the hands of maniacs should not be a controversial idea.

No hunter needs an AR-15 to bring down a deer. None of us needs such a weapon to defend our families against intruders. And for those who believe assault rifles offer protection against a hypothetical tyrannical government -- or who perhaps consider the present government a tyranny -- I have sobering news: If and when the black helicopters come, they will be accompanied by tanks.

National poll: Clinton lead grows over Trump

By NICK GASS 06/14/16 06:16 AM EDT

Hillary Clinton’s advantage over Donald Trump grew over the course of the last week, according to the results of the latest NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday.

In the same week that Clinton clinched the Democratic nomination and Trump continued his criticism of federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel, the former secretary of state leads 49 percent to 42 percent.

Clinton narrowed Trump’s lead among men and white voters to single digits over the past week and now leads Trump by 25 points — 58 percent to 33 percent — among voters describing themselves as moderate. Trump led men by 14 points in last week’s survey but now leads by only 9 points in this week’s poll — 51 percent to 42 percent. Among white voters, Trump’s lead also shrank to 9 points, 50 percent to 41 percent.
