Weapon "has become the gold standard for mass murder of innocent civilians"BY TESSA STUART June 13, 2016
Omar Mateen reportedly legally purchased the AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle and 9mm handgun that he used in Sunday morning's attack in Orlando. Charles Krupa/AP
Over three hours early Sunday morning, Omar Mateen, barricaded inside a gay nightclub in a residential neighborhood of Orlando, shot and killed 49 people; an additional 53 were wounded. The standoff ended around 5 a.m., when Mateen was killed by police.
Mateen carried two guns with him Sunday: a 9mm handgun and a .223 caliber AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle. Both guns were purchased legally within the last week in Florida, authorities confirmed Sunday.
Mateen, a security guard, was licensed to carry a concealed weapon. In Florida, though, you don't need a license to buy or carry a rifle like the AR-15. There is a three-day waiting period to purchase a handgun like the Glock Mateen also had on him but no waiting period at all to buy an AR-15.

GOP blocks bill to stop terrorists from buying guns
12/04/15 12:23 PMUPDATED 12/04/15 05:26 PM
Senate Republicans rejected a bill that aims to stop suspected terrorists from legally buying guns, on Thursday. The vote came a day after at least 14 people were killed during the San Bernardino massacre in California by two suspects, including a woman said to have pledged allegiance to ISIS.
Forty-five senators voted for the bill and 54 voted against it. One Democrat, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and one Republican, Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, crossed party lines.
The measure would have denied people on the terrorist watch list the ability to buy guns.

Drug companies continue to raise prices despite public backlash
Pfizer just raised drug prices for a second time this yearand it's not alone.by Beth Mole - Jun 10, 2016 12:39pm CDT
Last week, as Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed off on the first state law requiring drug companies to justify steep price hikes, Pfizer was in the process of raising the list prices of its drugs by an average of 8.8 percent, according to a Pfizer spokesperson. The price boost follows a similar one in January, which involved raising the list price of more than 100 drugs, some by as much as 20 percent.
Pfizer isnt alone in this trend. Drug companies including AbbVie, Eli Lilly, Merck, and Bristol-Myers Squibb also continue to steadily raise prices across the boardalthough, it's happening at modestly lower rates than those seen in 2015, as FiercePharma reports.
The march towards ever higher drug costs continues despite strong public outcry.

Surprise: Bernie Sanders's Youth Revolution Loved Rallies More Than Actually Voting
Sanders energized the youth vote in a way that allowed him to dominate that voting bloc. The problem is, that voting bloc failed him when the time came to cast a ballot.CHEZ PAZIENZA
This won't be about Bernie Sanders, per se. Bernie Sanders seems to be positioning himself to do the right thing in the coming weeks. What this means is that it's time to strike a conciliatory tone in the name of forging a unified front of decent Americans aimed at ensuring that Donald Trump and the morally bankrupt party sanctioning his quest for the White House do not succeed.
No, this will be about what it's been about almost since the beginning of Sanders's improbable rise: his rabid disciples.
Specifically, his supposed army of youthful revolutionaries; the political neophytes who formed a cult of personality around Sanders knowing little about how politics actually work; the people who still threaten to "burn it all down" because they didn't get their way; the meme-warriors who've spent the past 48 hours lashing out at those who've endorsed Hillary Clinton, including their former progressive hero Elizabeth Warren; the kids who insist their lack of presence in the general election, the result of their candidate not winning, will doom any Democratic effort.

Undeclared Democratic Party chairs begin migration to Clinton
By DANIEL STRAUSS 06/10/16 05:01 PM EDT
Undeclared Democratic Party chairmen are coming off the sidelines and declaring their support for Hillary Clinton now that she's the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Maryland Democratic Party Chairman Bruce Poole is backing Clinton, he told POLITICO via text message on Friday, adding that the Clinton campaign is now aware of his support. Even though Clinton won Maryland, 63 percent to Bernie Sanders' 32 percent, Poole said he had delayed supporting the former secretary of state because he wanted to let the primary play out and give Sanders and Clinton time to make their cases.

Franken would be ‘tremendous’ VP, says Dem
June 10, 2016, 03:04 pm
By Ben Kamisar and Timothy Cama
Sen. Al Franken would be a tremendous vice presidential pick, Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison said Friday.
Al Franken is a brilliant man, hes very smart, he has excellent progressive credentials and hes the funniest person in Congress, Ellison said of the former Saturday Night Live player.
Why does that matter? I think its important to lampoon Donald Trump, make him what he is ridiculous. Who better to do that than someone who is an expert funnyman.

June 10 (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by 11 points in the U.S. presidential race, showing little change after she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee this week, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday.
Clinton this week defeated party rival Bernie Sanders, 74, in four of six nominating contests, most notably California and New Jersey, and won the endorsements of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and other party leaders.
