Democrats Advance Most Progressive Platform in Party History

Democrats Advance Most Progressive Platform in Party History
by ALEX SEITZ-WALD JUL 10 2016, 1:30 PM ET

ORLANDO, Fla. — Democrats advanced this weekend what is easily their most liberal platform ever as representatives of Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton strove toward unity during a sometimes contentious party meeting.

The draft platform, which still needs to be ratified at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia later this month, showed Sanders' clear influence, even though he lost a battle on his top priority, opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

"We are proud of the work that Democrats did in Orlando and for coming together to further strengthen the most progressive platform in the history of our party," said Clinton senior policy adviser Maya Harris as the two-day Platform Committee meeting wrapped up late Saturday night.

Democrats call for ‘pathway’ to marijuana legalization

Democrats call for ‘pathway’ to marijuana legalization
By David Weigel July 9 at 6:27 PM

ORLANDO — The Democratic Party endorsed a "reasoned pathway to future legalization" of marijuana and called for the drug to be downgraded in the Controlled Substances Act, in a tense and unexpected victory for supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Going into the platform committee meeting, Sanders's campaign had no new language about marijuana. The senator from Vermont had favored state-to-state legalization efforts, and the language approved by the drafting committee called for "policies that will allow more research on marijuana, as well as reforming our laws to allow legal marijuana businesses to exist without uncertainty."

Bernie Sanders on Saturday praised Hillary Clinton’s health care agenda released this morning, calling it a “significant step forward” in guaranteeing health care access for Americans.

“Together, these steps will get us closer to the day where everyone in this country has access to quality, affordable health care,” he said on a call this morning after Clinton released the plan.

Badass Civil Rights Hero Rep. John Lewis Will Lead Us Out Of This Awful Week

Badass Civil Rights Hero Rep. John Lewis Will Lead Us Out Of This Awful Week
By Evan Hurst - July 8, 2016 - 4:15pm

Well here we are on a Friday, closing out another awful week of inexcusable violence and death. Should we just get in bed for the next three or fifteen days, pull the covers over our heads and snuggle with a bottle of whiskey?

Eh, maybe, but civil rights hero John Lewis, the Democratic congressman from Georgia, would rather you kick it into gear, get your hands dirty and start making some #GoodTrouble, so we can make a change in this country.

Hillary Clinton's Poll Numbers Look Nearly Unbeatable

Hillary Clinton's Poll Numbers Look Nearly Unbeatable
KEVIN DRUM JUL. 7, 2016

Pew has another of its surveys out, this time a fairly generic presidential poll. They do this in June every four years, and they have a pretty good track record. Without further ado, here are the topline results:

Hillary Clinton is 9 points ahead of Donald Trump regardless of whether Gary Johnson is in the race. A subsequent question makes clear there's very little wiggle room here: among voters who support a candidate, nearly all of them say their choice is firm. Bottom line: there are very few undecided voters—who will probably break pretty evenly anyway—and everyone else says their minds are solidly made up.

Jobs Roar Back With Gain of 287,000 in June, Easing Worry

By PATRICIA COHENJULY 8, 2016
Quashing worries that job growth was flagging, the government on Friday reported that employers increased payrolls by 287,000 in June. The arresting surge comes as Republicans and Democrats fine-tune the economic messages they plan to deliver at their conventions later this month.

The official unemployment rate did rise to 4.9 percent, from 4.7 percent, but that was largely because more Americans rejoined the work force. And average hourly earnings ticked up again, continuing a pattern of rising wages that brought the yearly gain to 2.6 percent.

“Wow, this one takes my breath away,” said Diane Swonk, an independent economist in Chicago.
