The RNC's plan to create a Romney "bookend effect" at next week's convention, with Ann speaking on Monday night to assure voters that the man accepting the nomination on Thursday isn't a robot, may be foiled by the major network's commitment to airing programs people will actually watch. The New York Times reports that NBC, CBS, and ABC don't intend to air any of the Republican National Convention on Monday night, with reruns of Castle, Hawaii Five-O, and a new Grimm trumping Ann's speech. Though it seems that the party should have known weeks ago that the networks wouldn't broadcast four full days of prime-time convention coverage, the Romney campaign was fuming. “I don’t think it’s the decision that Bill Paley would have made,” quipped a senior Romney adviser, underscoring the need for Ann to paint her husband as a guy people born after 1957 can relate to.

Tampa Mayor: City ‘Prepared’ To Call Off Convention In Event Of Dangerous Weather


Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn told CNN the city is prepared for severe weather if it hits during the Republican National Convention next week. Tropical Storm Isaac is forecast to head toward the Florida by early Monday.

"We're prepared for it, we've trained for it, we have contingency plan after contingency plan," Buckhorn said. But in the event of dangerous weather, "human safety, human life trumps politics," he said.

At a press event in California before the GOP primary in that state, former Gov. Mitt Romney was asked about his support

“Governor Romney, it is true, is it not that you had four deferments from the Vietnam War… You have said before that you support war and the efforts of US military involvement overseas at all costs, yet you made sure you would never go to war yourself. What makes you think that veterans and those currently serving in the military think that you have their best interests at heart when you yourself weren’t even interested in sacrificing your time, energy, or life for your nation at a time when it seemed most crucial?”


Romney responded:

“That’s a good question, young man, and I would be happy to answer it. The Vietnam War came at a time in my life when I had other plans. I knew in my heart of hearts that I would one day serve my nation. That I would one day hold an office that would help not only our nation, but also the world. So I did what I could to make sure that I would be around to serve my nation, as well as serving God by teaching very important religious principles to a broader audience overseas. My father did not want me serving, and he convinced me that yes, I was too important to go to Vietnam. I had a greater purpose in life. I wasn’t neglecting my nation, but rather preparing myself for a future of service.”



An onlooker that seemingly was a Vietnam veteran shouted, “Fuck you, Romney! You wouldn’t know service if it bit you on your well manicured ass.” To which Romney responded, “Please don’t be testy, my friend. I did what I did for you, and I thank you for your service as well.” That same veteran responded, “You only served yourself, you jackass. You could’ve served your nation even if your draft number wasn’t called… but you didn’t… you chose to serve yourself instead. Thanks for revealing your true colors.”

Todd Akin endorses rape as a legitimate contraceptive

In an attempt to justify his no-exceptions view on abortions, US congressman Todd Akin has insisted that pregnancy resulting from rape is ‘really rare’ because sexual violence is actually a form of contraception.

During an interview with KTVI-TV on Sunday, Mr Akin said, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Mr Akin went on to highlight the money that could be saved from using a more aggressive form of contraception.

“Instead of putting a condom on, why not try a balaclava and some loose fitting trousers,” he said.

“Unlike condoms they can be used again and again.”

The 65 year-old Republican, who is refusing to resign from a Senate race in Missouri, also offered advice to couples who wanted to delay starting a family.

“If you’re not trying to conceive, just ensure that you only have sex when your partner vigorously rejects you,” he explained.

“No means no kids, that’s what I say.”

Mr Akin also went on to offer tips to women who may consider the whole experience as horrifically distressing.

“Rape is such an ugly word,” he said.

The current president of the IGFM, Martin Lessenthin, works closely with the Venezuelan opposition party Primero Justicia, led by anti-Chavez terrorist Alejandro Peña Esclusa. Primero Justicia, in turn, is the main partner of the International Republican Institute, an extreme right-wing group funded by the US Government’s National Endowment for Democracy. Based on my 23 years of reporting on global rape law, and my five years of supporting women at rape crisis centers and battered women’s shelters, I can say with certainty that this case is not being treated as a normal rape or sexual assault case. New details from the Swedish police make this quite clear. Their transcript of the complaints against Assange is strikingly unlike the dozens of such transcripts that I have read throughout the years as an advocate for victims of sex crimes.

Specifically, there are eight ways in which this transcript is unusual:

1) Police never pursue complaints in which there is no indication of lack of consent.

Ask Sweden to produce ANY other police report in which any action was taken in a situation in which there is no stated lack of consent or threat of force. Police simply won’t act on a complaint if there is no indication of a lack of consent, or of consent in the face of violence. The Assange transcripts, in contrast to any typical sex crime report, are a set of transcripts in which neither of the women has indicated a lack of consent. (There is one point at which Miss W asserts she was asleep – in which case it would indeed have been illegal to have sex with her – but her deleted tweets show that she was not asleep, and subsequent discussion indicates consent.)

The Assange transcript is therefore anomalous, as it does not suggest in any way that either woman was unconsenting, or felt threatened. On this basis alone, therefore, the Assange transcript is completely aberrant.

2) Police do not let two women report an accusation about one man together.

The transcripts seem to indicate that the police processed the two accusers’ complaints together.

This is completely unheard-of in sex crime procedures; and the burden should be on Clare Mongomery, QC, or Marianne Ny, to produce a single other example of this being permitted.

When the George Orwell Memorial Trust proposed a statue of the writer for outside the BBC’s new headquarters it expected an enthusiastic response. However, not everyone appeared enamoured of the plan.

According to Baroness Bakewell, who is backing the campaign, Mark Thompson, the Corporation’s outgoing director general, said the statue could not be erected on BBC premises because Orwell was “too Left-wing”.

VERETT -- An Everett man was arrested Sunday night for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend's parrot to death with a serving fork.

Everett police found the parrot's body and the fork at the couple's home after the girlfriend called 911, court papers show.

The woman reportedly told police that the man, 63, had been upset with her about a plan for them to have dinner with friends.

She said she went to the store, and returned to find the house trashed and the parrot dead on the floor.

When police arrived they found the parrot and a large pool of blood on the floor.

"Upon inspection of the parrot, it appeared to have been stabbed," officers wrote in their report. "A serving fork with apparent blood stains was discovered on the living room floor. It appeared that the serving fork was used to stab the parrot to death."

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol on Monday admitted that it was “kinda weird” that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s tax rate was only around 13 percent when most middle-class people paid significantly more.

“The custom over the last 20-30 years, I suppose, has been to release at least a couple years of tax returns,” the neoconservative pundit told C-SPAN. “If you know you’re running for president anyway, I think it’s just part of the price of running. … Obama did so Romney probably should do it.”

“Look, it’s an interesting debate about what tax rates people should pay, how progressive the tax code should be,” he continued. “I personally, if I were designing the tax code, would have a tax code in which Mitt Romney paid more than 13 percent, I would say, given what I know about the kind of investments he made money from.”
