Ichingcarpenter's JournalRomney Asked VP Shortlisters for Ten Years of Tax Returns
As part of its vetting, the Romney campaign required at least some of the candidates on the short listincluding the eventual winner of the GOP veepstakes, Ryanto submit fully 10 years of tax returns, according to a knowledgeable source.
The requirement was consistent with the past practices of both Republican and Democratic campaigns. Indeed, in 2008, Mitt Romney turned over 23 years of taxes to John Mccains campaign when he was under consideration to be the Arizona senators running mate.
But this year, the vetting of tax returns has had particular political resonance because of Romneys refusal to release more than two years of his own tax filings. The Obama campaign has waged a withering assault on Romney for his failure to be more transparent about his personal finances, part of a larger narrative seeking to portray the Republican nominee as a privileged plutocrat who has been able to mine the tax code for loopholes and other tricks unavailable to average middleclass Americans. For months, Chicago and its allies have hammered Romney on taxes, suggesting he must be hiding something.
In response to questions about the 10-year requirement, Romney campaign press secretary Andrea Saul declined comment. We do not discuss the VP selection process, she wrote in an email.

Nakoula/ Bacile -- a guy guilty of freakin' bank fraud -
Think about it. Who the hell is going to loan Nakoula -- a guy guilty of freakin' bank fraud -- the sum of five million dollars? Even if the actual budget was $50,000, how would this jailbird scrape up the dough? He was sent to prison for 21 months in 2010; how did he secure an early release?
Nakoula, who talked guardedly about his role, pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.
And what sort of crook would make it his first order of business, after walking out of jail, to make a movie denigrating Mohammed -- a film intentionally designed to create an international incident? If you had no job, no prospects, a prison record and a debt of more than three-quarters of a million dollars, would your first instinct be to make a damned movie? Even though you've never made a movie before in your life?

Ari Fleischer Uses 'Truther' Slur to Blunt Criticism Of NY Times story.
Ari Fleischer Uses 'Truther' Slur to Blunt Criticism That the Bush White House Received More Bin Laden Warnings Than Were Previously Known
Matt Welch|Sep. 11, 2012 9:46 am
In The New York Times today, journalist Kurt Eichenwald writes a 9/11 anniversary op-ed asserting that there are many more pre-Sept. 11 documents aside from the infamous Aug. 6, 2001 presidential daily brief warning the Bush administration that Osama bin Laden was planning to attack the United States. The nut of Eichenwald's argument:
SNIP
Regardless, these two reaction-tweets to the op-ed by former Bush administration spokesman Ari Fleischer are just crazy-wrong:
Disgusting op-ed in NYT by a truther implying Bush knew of 9-11/let it happen. NYT decries lack of civility, then adds to it.
Ari Fleischer (@AriFleischer) September 11, 2012
How can the NYT ridicule birthers then make their op-ed page home to a truther??
Ari Fleischer (@AriFleischer) September 11, 2012
To state what should be the obvious, asserting that there was more relevant pre-attack intelligence than previously known, and criticizing the administration for undervaluing it, is an entirely different category of commentary than claiming that "Bush knew." If Eichenwald is a "truther," there is no evidence of it in this op-ed. Fleischer's blurt is the kind of mistake that immediately calls to mind the phrase "reading incomprehension," but I think it's something a bit more insidious than that.
SNIP..

Actual socialist Bernie Sanders: No, Obama is not a socialist
Speaking to talk show host Bill Moyers this week, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who self-identifies as a Democratic socialist, explained that no matter how many times Republicans say it, President Barack Obama is not a socialist as well.
Democratic socialism (PDF), he explained, means that health care should be a right of all people, he said. That higher education should be a right, kids shouldnt graduate $50,000 in debt. Which means we should pass legislation that represents the interests of working families and not the moneyed interests. Which means that we should be aggressive at global warming and protecting the environment for future generations. Which means workers earn a decent wage. All of these ideas which people have talked about from Eugene Debs on.
So Moyers asked him directly: The right says that Obamas a socialist they keep calling him a socialist can you prove hes not a socialist?
Can I prove hes not a socialist? Yes, Sanders replied. Look at his record. He is not a socialist.
Sanders went on to warn Moyers that the distribution of wealth in the U.S. has begun to overwhelm the political system, with billionaire families dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into elections in an effort to, as Sanders said, create a more unfair America.

Romney Vows to Fight Marijuana Legalization 'Tooth and Nail'—
Romney Vows to Fight Marijuana Legalization 'Tooth and Nail'
This clip of Mitt Romney talking about marijuana at an appearance in New Hampshire is about a month and a half old, but I don't think anyone has noted it here yet. It is interesting for the way it reflects the basic difference between Romney and Barack Obama when it comes to drug policy, which is a matter of style rather than substance. Asked about legalizing marijuana for medical use, Romney gives the standard prohibitionist response:
I would not legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes, and the reasons are straightforward: As I talk to people in my state and at the federal government level about marijuana and its role in society, they are convinced that the entry way into a drug culture for our young people is marijuana. Marijuana is the starter drug....The idea of medical marijuana is designed to get marijuana out in the public marketplace and ultimately lead to the legalization of marijuana overall. And in my view, that's the wrong way to go. I know that other people have differing views. If you'd like to get someone who is in favor of marijuana, I know there are some on the Democratic side of the aisle who will be happy to get in your campaign. But I'm opposed to it, and if you elect me president, you're not going to see legalized marijuana. I'm going to fight it tooth and nail.
In short, medical marijuana is bad because it leads to recreational marijuana, which is bad because it leads to crack and heroin

Obama jokes he should make Clinton ‘Secretary of Explaining Stuff’
PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire US President Barack Obama joked Friday that he should appoint Bill Clinton as his Secretary of Explaining Stuff following his acclaimed speech at the Democratic convention.
Clinton is expected to follow his address, which even some Republicans admitted was a masterful summary of the election arguments and Obamas presidency, with appearances for Obama in crucial battleground states.
President Clinton made the case in the way only he can. You know, somebody somebody emailed me after his speech and said,You need to appoint him secretary of explaining stuff, Obama joked in New Hampshire.
That was pretty good. I like that. Secretary of Explaining Stuff.
Obamas spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One Friday that the campaign would be keen to have Clintons help again on the campaign trail ahead of the November 6 election clash with Mitt Romney.
Wed love to have him out there as much as he is available, Psaki said.
Hes been an incredible advocate for the president for quite some time, Psaki said.
