Trump demands 'no early voting' in latest threat to upcoming elections as California and New York ballots roll in

Source: The Independent

Monday 27 October 2025 17:07 EDT

Even as he cast ballots by mail himself and launched messaging campaigns encouraging his supporters to do the same, Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to eliminate mail-in voting altogether, baselessly casting doubt on the legitimacy of mail-in votes.
Now he appears to be calling for the end of all forms of early voting.

After publicly demanding the prosecution of his political enemies, Trump encouraged the Department of Justice to investigate the outcome of the 2020 presidential election with “gusto” — and signaled that the “biggest SCANDAL in American history” will “happen again” unless the government eliminates early voting.

“Look what happened to our Country when a Crooked Moron became our ‘President!’” he wrote on Truth Social. “We now know everything. I hope the DOJ pursues this with as much ‘gusto’ as befitting the biggest SCANDAL in American history! If not, it will happen again, including the upcoming Midterms. No mail-in or ‘Early’ Voting, Yes to Voter ID!”

The president’s post, which veered from the NBA gambling scandal to California’s redistricting push, glimpsed how his administration is framing midterm elections in 2026 with the balance of power in Congress — and the future of his administration — at stake: Votes for Democratic candidates and the measures they support that are not cast on Election Day are illegitimate.

Border Patrol agents under fire for allegedly disrupting children's Halloween parade in Chicago

Source: ABC News

October 27, 2025, 5:00 PM

The U.S. Border Patrol is coming under criticism from Chicago residents who claim federal agents disrupted a children's Halloween parade over the weekend, allegedly with aggressive tactics and tear gas during an immigration enforcement incident.

The latest clash between federal agents and residents came as Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino, who is leading the "Operation Midway Blitz" immigration enforcement in Chicago, is scheduled to appear before a federal judge on Tuesday.

Judge Sara Ellis of the U.S. District Court for the Northern Illinois has ordered Bovino to appear before her following allegations that he had personally deployed tear gas on a crowd of demonstrators "without justification" last week, according to court filings in a lawsuit against the federal government.

Ellis indicated in a hearing earlier this month that she was “profoundly concerned” over the tactics used by federal agents in a series of clashes with protesters. She issued a temporary restraining order on Oct. 9, restricting federal agents from using aggressive tactics to quell protests, including the deployment of tear gas without advanced warning.

2 Illinois National Guard members speak out: "I won't turn against my neighbors"

Source: CBS News

Updated on: October 27, 2025 / 3:34 PM EDT

Chicago — Two Illinois National Guard members told CBS News they would refuse to obey federal orders to deploy in Chicago as part of President Trump's controversial immigration enforcement mission — a rare act of open defiance from within the military ranks.

"It's disheartening to be forced to go against your community members and your neighbors," said Staff Sgt. Demi Palecek, a Latina guardswoman and state legislative candidate from Illinois's 13th District. "It feels illegal. This is not what we signed up to do."

Both Palecek and Capt. Dylan Blaha, who is running for Congress in the same district, described growing unease among Guard members after the White House federalized 500 troops – including members of the Illinois and Texas National Guard – to secure federal immigration facilities and personnel in the Chicago area.

"I signed up to defend the American people and protect the Constitution," Blaha said. "When we have somebody in power who's actively dismantling our rights — free speech, due process, freedom of the press — it's really hard to be a soldier right now."

'Playing dumb': Mike Johnson hammered after wild claim about who's running the government

Source: Raw Story

October 27, 2025 3:30PM ET

President Donald Trump was caught mocking Speaker Mike Johnson, claiming not only to be the president but also to control Johnson so thoroughly that he is, in effect, the speaker as well. This has prompted renewed questions about who is actually running the government.

Writing in The New Republic on Monday, Edith Olmsted argued that Johnson is taking "playing dumb to a whole new level." Johnson holds daily news conferences about the government shutdown, and during Monday's event, he insisted that it’s not just Republicans who control the government. Since the GOP controls the House, Senate, and White House, the claim raised eyebrows.

Johnson and top GOP senators have struggled to convince most Americans that Democrats are to blame for the shutdown.

"With the government shutdown entering its fourth week, Johnson has turned playing dumb into an art form as he abstains from actually leading his party," wrote Olmsted. "During his daily delivery of remarks to the press, Johnson has incessantly insisted he hasn’t heard about anything bad his government has done while running a deluded defense of President Donald Trump’s administration."

Walmart Set To Lose Billions From SNAP Benefits Stopping in November

Source: Newsweek

Oct 27, 2025 at 12:42 PM EDT

Walmart could see a significant decline in consumer spending if the government suspends Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits as a result of the ongoing shutdown.

According to a June report from the market research data firm Numerator, Walmart accounts for roughly a quarter (24 percent) of SNAP shoppers’ total spending.

Given the estimated $100 billion spent by the government on the program annually—roughly $8.3 billion monthly—this would imply a loss of about $2 billion for Walmart if the benefits are withheld for the entire month of November. Newsweek has contacted Walmart through its website for comment.

Why It Matters

Now in its 27th day, the government shutdown that began on October 1 over expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies is now the second longest in U.S. history. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits are continuing despite the lapse in funding, but the suspension of SNAP payments is expected to significantly impact the more than 40 million Americans who rely on the program.

CNN Boss Ordered Teardown Censorship After V.I.P. West Wing Visit

Source: Daily Beast

CNN chief Mark Thompson reportedly told the cable network’s reporters to ease up on coverage of the controversial destruction of the East Wing—after he had a V.I.P. visit to the White House. Although denied by CNN, the report from the Status newsletter appears to be the latest example of media bosses bending the knee before the Trump administration.

The historic White House East Wing was bulldozed last week to make way for President Donald Trump’s $300 million vanity project, a 90,000-square-foot ballroom that will be more than twice the size of the rest of the White House. The teardown prompted widespread outrage. Among those criticizing the demolition of the 1902 structure were Chelsea Clinton, who said Trump was taking a “wrecking ball to our heritage,” and Ronald Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis, who called it “heartbreaking” and “complete destruction.”

Status reported that Thompson had a private meeting at the White House last Wednesday. It says staff at the network were “taken aback” when he suggested during a daily network editorial call the next morning that CNN ease up on its reporting of the East Wing’s demolition. Thompson also said CNN viewers were not that interested in the story, according to two people familiar with the matter cited in the Status story.

A YouGov America survey last week showed that 50 percent of people disapproved of the White House refurbishment, and that 53 percent were against the East Wing being torn down. Only 24 percent of the 2,000 people polled approved of Trump’s ballroom designs.

Republicans grapple with voter frustration over rising health care premiums

Source: AP

Updated 2:53 PM EDT, October 27, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — The first caller on a telephone town hall with Maryland Rep. Andy Harris, leader of the House’s conservative Freedom Caucus, came ready with a question about the Affordable Care Act. Her cousin’s disabled son is at risk of losing the insurance he gained under that law, the caller said. “Now she’s looking at two or three times the premium that she’s been paying for the insurance,” said the woman, identified as Lisa from Harford County, Maryland. “I’d love for you to elucidate what the Republicans’ plan is for health insurance?”

Harris, a seven-term Republican, didn’t have a clear answer. “We think the solution is to try to do something to make sure all the premiums go down,” he said, predicting Congress would “probably negotiate some off-ramp” later. His uncertainty reflected a familiar Republican dilemma: Fifteen years after the Affordable Care Act was enacted, the party remains united in criticizing the law but divided on how to move forward.

That tension has come into sharp focus during the government shutdown as Democrats seize on rising premiums to pressure Republicans into extending expiring subsidies for the law, often referred to as Obamacare. President Donald Trump and GOP leaders say they’ll consider extending the enhanced tax credits that otherwise expire at year’s end — but only after Democrats vote to reopen the government. In the meantime, people enrolled in the plans are already being notified of hefty premium increases for 2026.

As town halls fill with frustrated voters and no clear Republican plan emerges, the issue appears to be gaining political strength heading into next year’s midterm elections. “Premiums are going up whether it gets extended or not,” said GOP Sen. Rick Scott. “Premiums are going up because health care costs are going up. Because Obamacare is a disaster.”

GOP Senator Files Supreme Court Brief With Democrats Against Donald Trump

Source: Newsweek

Oct 27, 2025 at 11:26 AM EDT

Senator Lisa Murkowski joined congressional Democrats on Friday in filing a brief with the Supreme Court challenging President Donald Trump’s authority to impose tariffs.

“When the President wishes to impose tariffs, he must comply with the existing, lawful delegations of tariff power that Congress has enacted or, if he finds those authorities insufficient, ask Congress for new authority. Here, however, the President has usurped Congress’s constitutional authority by impermissibly using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act,” attorneys for the members of Congress wrote.

Why It Matters

The court has agreed to hear two cases related to Trump’s ability to authorize tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). In one case, Learning Resources and hand2mind, two companies that make educational toys and products, argue that the tariffs will cost them $100 million this year. The other challenge was brought by a group of five small businesses and 12 states.

IEEPA is a 1977 law that allows the president to “deal with any unusual and extraordinary threat, which has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States, to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States, if the President declares a national emergency with respect to such threat.”

'We didn't ask for this': Nebraska town fuming over 'asinine' ICE takeover of camp

Source: Raw Story

October 27, 2025 12:18PM ET

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is creating a different type of disruption in the town McCook, Nebraska, by making a deal with the Republican governor to take over a work camp and convert it into another undocumented immigrant holding facility. That led to lawsuits filed by the town's residents.

According to a report from the Washington Post, the state is handing over the Work Ethic Camp in McCook, population 7,212, to DHS with the town being cut out of the approximately $14 million paid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Aside from the money, the report notes that the town has been long proud of the camp that allowed offenders convicted of minor crimes to receive wages paid by the state as they try and restart their lives by working in the community, and now the camp is being snatched away to become, as Gov. Jim Pillen (R) calls it: “Cornhusker Clink.”

The Post is reporting, “The closure has McCook officials and local nonprofits that depended on the prison labor scrambling to find a new workforce,” with City Manager Nate Schneider adding, “We didn’t ask for this.”

Democrats move forward with new 2028 calendar

Source: Politico

10/27/2025 02:10 PM EDT

The Democratic Party’s debate about which states will get coveted early-voting spots in the 2028 presidential primary inched forward on Monday, with a new deadline for states to apply to lead the calendar. The Democratic National Committee is requiring states to apply by Jan. 16, which would establish the new lineup of states to be set sometime next year. The committee is using similar criteria for an early calendar slot as 2022, calling for a regionally diverse set of states. The window could include up to five states that would vote before Super Tuesday, the DNC said.

“The real question we face is asking each state why including them in the early window, pre-window period, helps us elect a Democratic president and win the elections,” Stuart Appelbaum, a DNC member, said during the Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting. “That is [the] prime criteria that we will be looking at and making our decision.”

The DNC revamped its calendar in 2022 to eliminate Iowa — historically the nation’s first voting state — add Michigan and elevate South Carolina to the first-place slot in 2024, a setup backed by then-President Joe Biden, whose own presidential bid was saved by South Carolina. That caused consternation in Iowa and New Hampshire, where leaders are now pressing to return to their influential spots.

The DNC planned to reevaluate the order ahead of the 2028 primary, but the committee’s moves take on fresh significance for a wide-open presidential primary process, in which the voting order of states will likely impact candidates’ strategy. But unlike in 2022, when Biden set the calendar, the DNC now has control of the process.
