Scott Bessent Mocked by Left for Saying He Feels the Pain of Soybean Farmers Because He is One: Net Worth is Over $500m

Oct 26th, 2025, 3:56 pm

Liberals are taking to social media to call out Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for claiming he feels the “pain” of soybean farmers because he’s one of them. ABC News’s Martha Raddatz asked Bessent Sunday about the plight of farmers facing Chinese boycotts on American soybeans due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

“American farmers have really suffered,” Raddatz said Sunday. “Do you see a real light at the end of the tunnel there, they may allow soybeans again?” “Martha, in case you don’t know it, I’m actually a soybean farmer, so I have felt this pain too,” Bessent answered.

According to The New York Times, Bessent — a former hedge fund manager whose net worth is estimated to top $500 million — owns as much as $25 million worth of corn and soybean farmland in North Dakota that he rents out to farmers, netting him more than $1 million a year.

Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) wrote, “Bessent is hoping Americans don’t know he’s worth over $500M. He doesn’t know the first thing about the pain farmers are feeling from this administration’s reckless actions.”

Sean Duffy to Withhold Millions from California Over Commercial Licenses

Source: Newsweek

Oct 26, 2025 at 03:47 PM EDT

Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo that he is “about to pull $160 million from California” and potentially the state’s ability to issue Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a month after the DOT issued an emergency action on the matter. Newsweek has reached out to the California governor’s office for comment via email on Sunday.

Why It Matters

Duffy’s comments come after some high-profile fatal crashes have sparked public debate over requirements for CDLs. A Florida crash by 28-year-old Harjinder Singh, a truck driver from Stockton, California, killed three people. Singh, a native of India, was later arrested in California and extradited to Florida on vehicular homicide charges, with federal authorities claiming he was in the country illegally when California issued his CDL. However, California officials say Singh obtained proper work permits in 2018 during President Donald Trump's previous administration.

Duffy has threatened to revoke $160 million in federal funding from California over alleged licensing violations. In late September, the DOT announced “emergency rules” that required all state DMVs to pause issuing licenses to non-citizens until they can comply with the "new federal standard." As of Sunday, the California DMV still has the update active on their website.

The Trump official's comments come as California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has repeatedly clashed with the White House, particularly over immigration raids and the federal deployment of thousands of National Guard troops. The governor, who is term limited, said on Sunday he would be “lying” if he didn’t say he is considering a White House run after the 2026 midterm elections.

Mayor in Ontario defends Reagan ad after Trump imposes 10 percent tariff on Canada

Source: The Hill

10/26/25 5:44 PM ET

A mayor from the Canadian province of Ontario defended an advertisement paid for by his province that includes remarks from former President Reagan to criticize President Trump’s tariffs.

The ad angered Trump, who has since said he will impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Canada’s exports to the United States.

“I support the premier’s approach,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said Sunday on CBC’s “Rosemary Barton Live,” referring to Ontaro Premier Doug Ford. “Sometimes you need to throw a rock in a pond to get a splash. He’s got a reaction.”

“It’s got a lot of coverage. And the words are truthful, despite what they’re trying to spin and say that, you know, it’s only a portion of the speech, Ronald Reagan viewed tariffs as taxes and would cost America in the long term.”

GOP grows uneasy over voters' health care premiums amid shutdown standoff

Source: CNN Politics

PUBLISHED Oct 26, 2025, 8:00 AM ET

Anxiety is rising among congressional Republicans that their party has no plan to address a critical health care deadline this fall that will result in spiking costs for millions of Americans – the issue at the heart of the deepening government shutdown crisis.

And some of those GOP members are offering a stark warning to their own leaders: Doing nothing could cost them their full control of Congress in next November’s midterms, calling for a plan that would address expiring enhanced Obamacare tax credits to be swiftly advanced once the government eventually reopens.

“I think the reality is, if costs go up under our control, it could have an impact on us,” Rep. David Valadao, a vulnerable GOP lawmaker from California, told CNN about the political effects of the health care fight. “I get that there’s some in leadership who don’t like hearing it but there’s no denying it.” “Just watching rates go up and pointing fingers is not what we should be doing in our position,” he said.

Valadao is among dozens of rank-and-file House and Senate members who have begun drafting their own ideas about how to deal with the expiring enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which help millions of Americans afford insurance. Many of those GOP members — predominantly from battleground seats — are also directly urging their leadership and the White House to do something to make sure the tax credits keep flowing at year’s end.

Bessent Says TikTok Deal Finalized, Trump and Xi to Announce This Week

Source: Newsweek

Oct 26, 2025 at 12:24 PM EDT

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday on CBS News' Face the Nation that China and the United States “ironed out” the details of the TikTok deal, and that an official announcement is expected when the two leaders meet on Thursday. Newsweek has filled out an online press form to contact TikTok for comment on Sunday.

Why It Matters

The announcement comes after months-long back-and-forth over the app, its algorithm, and parameters for operation in the U.S. Last month, the administration said China was onboard with the deal, but nothing has been finalized.

U.S. talks over TikTok’s ownership stem from national-security concerns. The first Trump administration raised concerns about the app and its ownership, seeking to ban it. Then-President Joe Biden gave a January 2025 deadline for a deal to be reached, or the app be shut down in the U.S. Trump, when he returned to office earlier this year, said he wanted to secure an agreement and delayed the ban, keeping the app online temporarily.

TikTok has widespread influence in the U.S., with about 43 percent of U.S. adults younger than 30 say they regularly get news from TikTok, a higher percentage than any other social media app, including YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, according to a Pew Research Center report published on September 25.

Gavin Newsom says he will consider White House run after 2026 elections

Source: CBS News

Updated on: October 26, 2025 / 9:26 AM EDT

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has become one of President Trump's most high-profile adversaries, told "CBS News Sunday Morning" in an exclusive interview that he will consider whether to run for president after the 2026 midterm elections.

In an interview taped Thursday in San Jose, Newsom was asked whether he would give "serious thought" to a White House bid once next year's midterm elections are over. "Yeah, I'd be lying otherwise," Newsom replied. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not — I can't do that."

Newsom, whose term ends in January 2027 and is prevented from running again due to term limits, cautioned that any decision is years away. "Fate will determine that," he said, when asked about whether he is moving closer to working out a reason for a national candidacy.

Newsom, 58, has made trips to key battleground states, including a visit this past July to South Carolina, which as of now is slated to host the first Democratic primary in the 2028 presidential election, although that could change.

Legality of US military activity around Venezuela is 'questionable,' Sen. Mark Kelly says

Source: ABC News

October 26, 2025, 11:00 AM

Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly said Sunday that the legality of the Trump administration sending an aircraft carrier battle group to waters around Central and South America is “questionable.” The move comes as the U.S. military carried out its 10th strike on an alleged Venezuelan drug boat, all of them in international waters.

"The White House and the Department of Defense could not give us a logical explanation on how this is legal," Kelly told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz. "They were tying themselves in knots trying to explain this. We had a lot of questions for them, both Democrats and Republicans. It was not a good meeting. It did not go well."

Kelly also criticized the possibility of the United States military conducting land attacks in Venezuela.

"You don't move a battlegroup all the way from where it was to the Caribbean. Unless you're planning on either to intimidate the country, which is rather intimidating, or you're going to start conducting combat operations in Venezuela. And this doesn't make the United States more safe. This makes us less safe. I mean, starting a war against Venezuela over what is a law enforcement action does not make any sense," Kelly said.

Air traffic controller shortages emerge, US transportation secretary says

Source: Reuters

October 26, 2025 1:55 PM EDT Updated 3 hours ago

WASHINGTON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - U.S. airports reported more than 20 incidents of air traffic controller shortages on Saturday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, in the latest sign of the government shutdown's impact.

Some 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers must work even if they are not being paid during the shutdown, which started on October 1 as lawmakers deadlocked over the federal budget. The Trump administration has warned that flight disruptions will increase as controllers miss their first full paycheck on Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday had 22 "triggers" that indicated shortages of air traffic controllers, Duffy told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" program. He called that figure "one of the highest that we've seen in the system" since October 1. "That's a sign that the controllers are wearing thin," Duffy said.

The state of air safety has been closely watched for signs of an increase in delays or cancellations, as observers look for anything that shows the shutdown is making life harder for Americans, which in turn could pressure lawmakers to break the deadlock. According to FlightAware, a flight tracking website, there were more than 5,300 U.S. flight delays on Saturday and more than 2,500 by 12 p.m. ET on Sunday. Delays have often been above average since the shutdown began.

'King-like powers': Chris Murphy says Trump prefers the government to remain closed

Source: Politico

10/26/2025 12:28 PM EDT

Democrats are accusing President Donald Trump and GOP congressional leadership of refusing to negotiate as the country heads into week four of a government shutdown, with one senator saying Trump prefers the government to be closed.

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Chris Murphy said the shutdown is giving Trump and his allies the ability to decide which departments are able to work.

“I think one of the reasons that President Trump is refusing to negotiate is because he likes the fact that the government is closed because he thinks he can exercise king like-powers,” the Connecticut senator said. “He can open up the parts of the government that he wants. He can pay the employees who are loyal to him. ... This is part of what happens in totalitarian states.”

As the shutdown continues, Democrats are adamant that they will not vote for a bill that does not extend health care subsidies but just days after the shutdown began, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said: “There is nothing to negotiate.” It is a position he has maintained, and Republicans have repeatedly argued issues around subsidies can be debated at a later date.

'No state has struggled more': Residents of 'Trump stronghold' blame him for epic downturn

Source: Raw Story

October 26, 2025 9:45AM ET

There is one state that has struggled more than any other with Donald Trump's policies, and its residents are worried, even calling the situation "death by a thousand paper cuts," according to a new report.

The New York Times on Sunday published an article called "In Trump-Friendly Iowa, the President’s Policies Have Hit Hard," in which the outlet argues that the "state has become a stronghold for President Trump."

"Now, his efforts on trade, energy and immigration are squeezing farmers, disrupting labor and threatening industries," the report states. According to the Times, a lot of the problems Iowans are having stem from the Argentinian bailout to import more foreign meat.

"When President Trump announced a $20 billion bailout for Argentina this month, Larry Ory, 86, a farmer in Earlham, Iowa, could hardly believe it, especially after boatloads of Argentine soybeans began shipping to China, a once-critical customer for Mr. Ory's family," according to the new report. "For Iowans, losing China’s soybean market in the president’s trade war was only one of many economic shocks that have hit the state since the start of Mr. Trump’s second term.
