Heartspring employee filmed special-needs student showering, posted video on Snapchat

A Wichita woman who filmed a nonverbal special-needs student naked in the shower at her residential school and shared the video on Snapchat will serve three years of probation, according to court records and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Taylor C. Flowers was an employee of Heartspring, 8700 E. 29th St. N. in Wichita, last fall when she used her cellphone to film the 17-year-old girl from behind as she reached for a loofah while bathing. Flowers then shared the footage on the social media platform Snapchat with a caption that reportedly poked fun at the special-needs teen, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Eagle.

The video was brought to authorities’ attention by another Heartspring employee who saw and reported it on Nov. 17, 2020, records show.

Flowers, 22, was criminally charged earlier this year with sexual exploitation of a child for taking and sharing the video, which showed the girl’s nude back, buttocks and legs, the arrest affidavit says. She pleaded guilty on July 2 to an amended count of breach of privacy, a felony, and was sentenced in mid-August after attorneys involved in the case recommended she be placed on probation, court records show.

...

She told the detective the video was short — maybe five seconds long — and that “she did this after another employee had sent her a photograph” over Snapchat “of another student on the toilet,” the affidavit says.

She told the detective “she knew it wasn’t right” and had considered telling her superiors about the toilet photo.

But instead of reporting it, she took her own footage of the 17-year-old girl showering to send back to the other employee, the affidavit says Flowers told the detective.

She told the detective she accidentally posted the video to her Snapchat story and removed it when she discovered her mistake.

Flowers also told the detective “that she would be upset if it was her daughter and she would have never done it if she hadn’t received a video from the other employee and took it as a joke,” the affidavit says.

Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello Pleads for Help to Get Female Guitar Students Out of Afghanistan

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello is advocating on behalf of a group of young female musicians in Afghanistan to get them out of harm’s way following the Taliban takeover of capital city, Kabul.

Over the weekend, Morello wrote an open letter asking the music industry for help; it was sent to Billboard by his friend, guitar teacher Lanny Cordola. The former Giuffria and House of Lords band member started a music school for girls in Afghanistan through his non-profit Miraculous Love Kids, an organization he founded in 2010 to teach guitar to children in war-torn areas.

In 2015, Cordola launched a program in Kabul called Girl With a Guitar, which has taught close to 200 students. The students have recorded remotely with Brian Wilson, Sammy Hagar, Nick Cave and Blake Shelton, in addition to recording a 2020 version of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” with Morello, The Go-Gos’Kathy Valentine, The Bangles’ Vicki Peterson and the Foo Fighters’ Rami Jaffee, among other musicians.
Artists Mentioned

“I’m writing on behalf of some very special girls in Afghanistan who are in grave danger,” Morello says. “[Girl With a Guitar] takes in street orphans and other girls that have endured significant trauma and uses music as a rehabilitation tool and means of working through their problems, their histories, and their hopes. I’ve had the honor of collaborating with these wonderful kids. Since the Taliban takeover their school has been destroyed and the girls are in hiding. They are at extreme risk because they are widely known to have performed Western music and have been educated by a male American teacher. Anything you could do to help save their lives would be much appreciated.”

Mike Richards out as 'Jeopardy!' executive producer after podcast controversy

Mike Richards is no longer the executive producer of “Jeopardy!" and “Wheel of Fortune,” Sony Pictures Television announced on Tuesday. The announcement comes less than two weeks after Richards stepped down as the new “Jeopardy!” host following the revelation of his many offensive comments on his former podcast.

“We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at ‘Jeopardy!’ it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. That clearly has not happened,” Suzanne Prete, the executive vice president for business and strategy for both game shows, said in an email to staff. “I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks.”

Prete added that Michael Davies from the production company Embassy Row will help production “on an interim basis until further notice.”

This story will be updated.

Georgia School Official Responds to COVID Crisis With 'Tone Deaf' Blue Jeans Proposal

“Our administrators sit in their offices sending out condescending little emails, as if jeans are going to help protect us or our families from getting sick,” one teacher said.

By the fourth week of the new school year this month, COVID had exploded across Georgia’s Bulloch County School District. As of Monday, 900 students in the district of just 11,000 had tested positive for coronavirus in the first three weeks of school.

For weeks, teachers and many parents had called for a mask mandate. But superintendent Charles Wilson refused to issue one. Instead, on Thursday night, he sent an email blast with the subject line “word of encouragement” to all the teachers in the district. After thanking them “for all that you are doing for our students and for each other,” the email, which has been seen by The Daily Beast, continued:

“I talked with principals today and we all agreed that, though it is a small gesture, you would enjoy the liberty of wearing jeans for the next month. So, by all means, please enjoy your jeans throughout the month of September (and the rest of August).”

If Wilson had meant his email to quiet the growing anger among his employees, it did just the opposite.

...

And, teachers say, the consequences of inaction in Bulloch County have been obvious. In the last two weeks, more than 1 percent of all school-aged kids have tested positive for coronavirus in Georgia. But in Bulloch County, 3.5 percent of all school-aged children, more than triple the rate statewide, have been infected with COVID in the last two weeks, according to data from the Georgia Department of Health.

By Monday, three weeks into the school year, 4,900 students were in quarantine, though in this district, which allows students with direct contact to continue attending classes unmasked until they show symptoms, that was less restriction than label.

This district has also apparently tried to give the impression of taking action on masks without really taking much action. On Aug. 12, during the second week of school, the district announced in a Facebook post that Wilson had activated the district’s “high spread protocol.” But the dramatic-sounding move represented just a sliver of change: signs encouraging mask-wearing would now be placed throughout each school. Masks were still not required, classes remained in session and students who had been exposed were still allowed to attend those classes, unmasked, until they showed symptoms.
