‘PBS NewsHour’ Plans Layoffs as It Closes Offices

WASHINGTON — The “PBS NewsHour,” the signature nightly newscast on public television, is planning its first significant round of layoffs in nearly two decades.

Amid declines in support from corporate sponsors, the show’s producer, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, will close the two offices it has outside of the Washington, D.C., area — in Denver and San Francisco — and lay off most of the employees there. The company, which is based in Arlington, Va., will also eliminate several of what it calls “noncritical production positions” at its main office.

Earlier this year, public television employees who were not authorized to speak publicly told The New York Times that the production company was facing a shortfall of up to $7 million, a quarter of its $28 million overall budget, in the fiscal year that ends this month. It is unclear what the company’s budget for the next fiscal year forecast. But a spokeswoman for the “NewsHour” acknowledged that the reorganization, which will take place over several months starting in July, would help balance the budget.

Any recommendations for shows as good as The Big Bang Theory????

I am finally watching The Big Bang Theory and loving it....

No tv for a few years now, so I know I have missed other equally excellent comedy shows,
besides Parks and Recreation, and VEEP.

Did you know there was a World Creators Summit in Washington D.C 3 days ago?

Think about that term for a minute.
They have a web page
http://www.creatorssummit.com/

Did you know that we have an Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator for the White House?
Think about THAT for a minute.

And that this Coordinator said:
"existing collaboration with ISPs, advertisers, credit card companies and domain registrars will continue into the future."
http://torrentfreak.com/u-s-copyright-czar-praises-voluntary-anti-piracy-agreements-at-creators-summit-130605/

and we now can add The War on Piracy to the War on Drugs and the War on Terror.

Lastly, anyone who thinks that we are merely talking about illegal downloading hasn't been paying attention.
Newspapers, television and radio have already fallen under the control of a handful of people.
The failed attempts at SOPA, CISPA and the Internet tax are salvos in the struggle for control of the internet.
Apparently it is now Gov't policy to help businesses in that struggle.

Internet tax bill dead if this story is correct

WASHINGTON, June 6, 2013 -- /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), who was Facebook bombed by over 3,000 young activists in recent days, announced this morning that his committee would not take up Senate-passed legislation to collect taxes on Internet sales. Goodlatte's statement effectively kills the bill, deceptively labeled the "Marketplace Fairness Act."
Generation Opportunity organized the Facebook bomb, encouraging its grassroots army to leave comments on Goodlatte's Facebook page. Over 3,000 public comments were posted in the first few hours alone, as reported by POLITICO.

Putin announces permanent navy presence in Mediterranean to protect Russia’s security

The Grand Chessboard is getting interesting,
because

MOSCOW — Russia announced on Thursday that it will keep a fleet of about dozen navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, a move President Vladimir Putin said is needed to protect his country’s national security.

Putin said the plan should not be seen as saber rattling, but it comes as Moscow is serving as a key ally and arms supplier to Syrian President Bashar Assad during that nation’s civil war. The only naval base that Russia has in the Mediterranean and anywhere outside the former Soviet Union is located in Syria.

Russian ships have been making regular visits to the Mediterranean, but the statements by Putin and other officials mark an attempt to revive a Soviet-era practice, when Moscow had a permanent navy presence in the waterway.

Remember....it is all about energy ( oil,gas sources, pipelines, ports, transportation corriders)
and all about keeping said energy being bought and sold in dollars.

" We can't get enough workers"

my roofer told me this week.
He said "the Mexicans are all gone" ( remember the anti-immigration laws that several states passed?)
and the guys that agree to show, often don't. ( VERY common around here)
He sees it as "no body wants to work with their hands anymore".
Says framers and other construction skills are badly needed, that there is a lot of work this year.

Now, he is talking about all the small towns here in Ala. not the big cities,
altho for all I know, the big cities are having the same problem.
And judging from the cost of the roof I had to just put on, the pay is not bad.
He also told me he has been working steady since March, has lots of jobs lined up in 4 counties around us.
I remember last year he called me and asked if I had heard of anyone wanting a roof.

Just a report from the hinterlands, on the local economy.

Oklahoma tornado largest one in recorded history

The EF-5 re-classification was based upon Doppler radar data taken by Oklahoma University's mobile RaXPol radar. According to comments made by tornado researcher Rick Smith at a press conference today, the mobile radar was positioned on top of an overpass, and recorded winds close to the surface of up to 295 mph in satellite suction vorticies that orbited the large, main vortex. The large, main vortex had EF-4 winds of 185 mph,
and the satellite suction vortices moved across the fields at that speed, and rotated on their own at speeds of up to 110 mph, giving a combined wind speed of up to 295 mph in some of the satellite vortices.
It's no wonder that so many storm chasers got in trouble with this tornado, since these suction vortices moved as speeds of up to 185 mph towards them as the tornado rapidly expanded into the largest on record.
The tornado killed tornado scientist Tim Samaras and his two chase partners, Paul Samaras and Carl Young, and also killed an amateur storm chaser, Richard Charles Henderson.
The 295 mph winds of the El Reno tornado rank second only to the world-record 302 mph (130 m/s) winds recorded in the Moore, Oklahoma tornado of May 3, 1999. However, the Moore tornado's winds were measured at an altitude of 105 feet (32 meters), so the winds near the surface may have been higher in the El Reno tornado.

UPDATE:
Also now reported as the widest tornado, at 2.6 miles wide.
