Meet George Zimmerman: He Is the NRA

Daniel Gross
03/22/2012 3:10 pm

<...>

The shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman is a heartbreaking tragedy. But make no mistake, it is not a surprise that it happened in Florida, the NRA's closest thing to an armed utopia. In fact, much more so than any of the shills they had promoting their agenda in their big budget propaganda campaign, George Zimmerman is the embodiment of the gun lobby and its vision for America.

George Zimmerman is the NRA.

And now the NRA has made it abundantly clear that their vision is of an America that looks just like Florida, a nation where it's easy for criminals and dangerous people to get, carry and use guns -- a nation without any gun laws, where just about anybody can get a gun and use it anywhere. Their spokespeople use fear, bordering on paranoia to justify flooding our streets with armed and violent people, and the result is more tragedies like Trayvon Martin's.

The NRA is literally working to promote "George Zimmermans" to carry and use their guns in virtually every state across our nation.

Just days after the Trayvon Martin tragedy, the NRA was working on Capitol Hill to nationalize Florida's vigilante mentality. The gun lobby has gotten U.S. senators to introduce a bill that will force states like New York with strong gun laws to follow Florida's model of arming criminals and killers. Led by Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska), they call S.B. 2188, the National Reciprocity Act.

We call it the George Zimmerman Armed Vigilante Act.

Doubts about Obama's faith persist among GOP faithful (especially southern Republican voters)

By BYRON TAU |
3/12/12 2:26 PM EDT

The incorrect belief that President Obama is Muslim is alive and well among some southern Republican voters, according to a new poll.

According to the latest PPP survey, a full majority — 52 percent — of Mississippi Republicans polled say that Obama is a Muslim, with only 12 percent of voters correctly identifying him as a Christian. Another 36 percent surveyed report that they are unsure about the president's faith.

In Alabama, PPP finds that 45 percent of GOP voters report that Obama is a Muslim, with 41 percent uncertain. Only 14 percent correctly identify Obama as a Christian.

"We’d never polled that anywhere else so I didn’t really know what to expect," PPP director Tom Jensen said in an email. "But I’m not terribly surprised by the numbers, especially in the context of the level of birtherism we found still existing in Georgia, Ohio, and Tennessee last week. I think those issues are closely related. With both the religion thing and the birther thing I’m not totally sure all these voters really think that Obama is a Muslim or that he was born in Kenya or Indonesia or wherever—I think it may be more a function of people who hate Obama expressing that negativity in any way they can to the point of making these odd claims about his personal identity."

Palin: Obama Wants To Return To The "Days Before The Civil War" When People Weren't Considered Equal

Yes, that's right. The nation's first black President wants to bring America back to the days before the Civil War according to Sarah Palin.

PALIN: Well, what we can gleam from this is an understanding of why we are all on the road that we are on and it's based on what went into his thinking, being surrounded by radicals. He is bringing us back Sean to days that... you can harken back to days before the Civil War, when unfortunately too many Americans mistakenly believed that not all men were created equal. And it was the Civil War that began the codification of the truth here in America... yes, we are equal and we all have equal opportunities, not based on the color of your skin.

You have equal opportunities to work hard and to succeed and to embrace the opportunities, god given opportunities to develop resources and work extremely hard and as I say, to succeed.

Now, it has taken all these years for many Americans to understand that that gravity, that mistake, took place before the Civil War and why the Civil War had to really start changing America. What Barack Obama seems to want to do is go back to before those days when we were in different classes based on income, based on color of skin.

Why are we allowing our country to move backwards instead of moving forward with that understanding that as our charters of liberty spell out for us, we are all created equally.

Analysis: Romney tax plan strongly favors the rich (Romney also proposes to raise taxes on the poor)

By Brian Montopoli

Mitt Romney's new tax plan strongly favors the wealthiest Americans, offering earners in the top 20 percent an average tax cut of more than $16,000 while raising taxes on the bottom 20 percent of earners, according to an analysis from a non-partisan Washington think tank.

The analysis out Thursday from the Tax Policy Center, a joint venture of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution think tanks, finds that under Romney's plan the bottom 20 percent would see their average federal tax rate increase $149, or 1.3 percent.

The top 20 percent, meanwhile, would see an average tax cut of $16,134 -- a 5.4 percent reduction in their tax rate. The top one percent of earners would see their average tax rate fall by nearly $150,000 per year, and the top 0.1 percent would see a reduction of more than $725,000.

<...>

According to the Tax Policy Center, Romney's plan would add $900 billion to the deficit in 2015, when the changes would go into full effect. The group has also found that the 20 percent tax cut, combined with Romney's proposal to repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, would add $3 trillion to the deficit over ten years - even if the Bush-era tax cuts and more recent tax cuts are extended. (That part of the analysis looked only at the impact of those two proposals, not Romney's tax plan overall.)
