Bernie Sanders Is The TRUE Family Values Candidate In This Race

December 11, 2015
Published in Letters

To The Daily News,

Saturday, Dec. 12, will be the Women's Day of Action in support of Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders. Throughout New Hampshire, events will be taking place highlighting Senator Sanders' longstanding commitment to women's rights and to policies benefiting women and families. Volunteers will also be gathering at the Laconia Campaign Office at 62 Canal St., starting at 10 a.m., to talk about some of these issues and to participate in phone banks and canvassing. Sanders supporters and others who want to learn more are encouraged to stop in.

So why Bernie Sanders? More specifically, why is Bernie the best choice when it comes to issues primarily affecting women?

Throughout Bernie's political career, he has been a consistent advocate for women. He has voted to protect women's right to choose and to have control over their own bodies. He has supported Planned Parenthood, which provides quality health care, including not only gynecological services but breast cancer exams and PAP tests, and services for low income pregnant women under the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) federal program (a program under repeated attack by Republicans). Sen. Sanders supports the expansion of services under the Violence Against Women Act (which addresses domestic and sexual violence against women) as well as the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act.

Bernie Sanders wants to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020. Two-thirds of minimum wage earners are women. Currently, full-time women workers earn 78 cents for every $1 earned by men. This is why Sanders supports the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would provide procedural remedies for wage disparity based on sex discrimination.

Senator Sanders also supports providing 12 weeks of paid family leave after the birth of a child.

Is there any wonder why Bernie Sanders has received the endorsement of the Working Families Party? Started in New York State in 1998, the WFP now has chapters in 10 states and a huge supporter base. This is the first time that organization has formally backed a candidate in a national election, with over 87 percent of the WFP membership voting for Sen. Sanders.

Policies that are good for women are good for families. Policies that are good for families are good for America. Some politicians speak loudly about "family values" and then vote against every policy that actually helps families. Bernie Sanders is the true family values candidate.

BERNIE vs. HILLARY On Facebook

Several months ago, Salon did an article comparing Bernie Sanders against Hillary Clinton on Facebook. On August 22, Bernie had “1,197,290 likes to Clinton’s 1,199,797. By the end of the day, he had 1,218,879 to her 1,205,437. His lead has only increased since then.” Where are they now? As of December 6, Bernie is at 2,029,423. Hillary is at 1,874,835. And please note the activity on those pages. Hillary posted a “Stand with Planned Parenthood” item on her page and got 5,064 people “liking” it and 381 people sharing it. Bernie had a similar posting. 28,162 liked it and 6,619 shared it. And please note that these are “Politician” pages, which means that they are basically controlled by the campaigns themselves. There are other types of pages on Facebook, and they are far more interesting.

When Time magazine asked for people to nominate its “Person of the Year,” on November 17 Bernie Sanders had 10.3% of the votes (first place) and Hillary got 1.4% (behind such people as John Kerry, Elon Musk, and Stephen Colbert).

Quite significant are the “group pages.” Unlike the “politician” or other sort of community pages, the “group pages” allow individuals to post articles and photos directly on the page. The other types of pages only allow comments. Bernie has dozens if not hundreds of such groups. “Bernie Sanders for President 2016” has 250,876 members. There are three groups for Hillary with a similar name, but their grand total is only 7,500 members. If you type in “Florida for Hillary,” you get one group with 1,844 members. “Florida for Bernie” gets two groups totalling more than 3,900 members. “Nevada for Bernie” gets two groups with 1,060 members total. “Nevada for Hillary” does not appear to exist as a group. There are other indicators, too. When Time magazine asked for people to nominate its “Person of the Year,” on November 17 Bernie Sanders had 10.3% of the votes (first place) and Hillary got 1.4% (behind such people as John Kerry, Elon Musk, and Stephen Colbert). Pope Francis got 3.7% And Donald Trump got 1.8%. I’m not sure that Time will select Bernie as Person of the Year for 2015, since we haven’t even had any primary voting, but it’s pretty indicative that he has received so many votes.

Element removed

Try using Google. Put in “Honk for Bernie,” and look at the images. You get lots of photos of events involving honking for Bernie. But if you put in “Honk for Hillary,” you get no pictures of events. None. What you get are pictures of bumper stickers saying things like “Hillary 2016 Prison or President?”, “Honk, if you hate Hillary,” and “I’m not Ready for Hillary.” (Yes, there are so pro Hillary bumper sticks, too, but a lot of negative ones. You get no pictures of negative Bernie bumper stickers.) If you try “Honk for Donald Trump,” all you get are five stickers, two of which say “Honk if you’re voting for Trump so I can give you the finger.” If you look for web sites on Google, you can find a link to one “Honk for Donald” event. Try it for Hillary, and you can find some references to honking for her, but most of them are from back in 2008. On the other hand, “Honk for Bernie” will guide you to all sorts of recent events. If you go on TwitterAudit.com and put in @HillaryClinton, you’ll learn that 41% of her followers are supposedly fake. Put in @BernieSanders and you’ll find that only 11% are fake. (Hillary has a lot more twitter followers than Bernie, but if you only count the “real” ones, they are very close in number). Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump) is 36% fake. Barack Obama (@BarackObama) is 63% fake. You have to wonder how accurate any of this is!

ABC, CBS, And NBC News Have Made An INTENTIONAL Decision To Ignore Bernie Sanders

The corporate owned profit first network news divisions have made the editorial decision that they are going to lavish airtime upon the presidential candidate who most fits their corporate owners’ ideology.

An analysis of network television news coverage reveals what supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders have long suspected; the three broadcast television networks are intentionally ignoring the Sanders campaign. Eric Boehlert of Media Matters has the revealing details:

So in terms of stand-alone campaign stories this year, it’s been 234 minutes for Trump, compared to 10 minutes for Sanders. And at ABC World News Tonight, it’s been 81 minutes for Trump and less than one minute for Sanders.

http://mediamatters.org/blog/2015/12/11/abc-world-news-tonight-has-devoted-less-than-on/207428

~snip~

The networks are ignoring Bernie Sanders because his anti-corporate message is dangerous to their well being. The broadcast and cable networks both have a habit of ignoring stories that can hurt their bosses’ bottom lines. Sen. Sanders is trying to inform the electorate, but the broadcast networks would rather focus on keeping voters ignorant by focusing on Trump. Donald Trump is the perfect corporate media candidate. The mainstream press has decided that has to be entertaining and turn a profit. Trump is an entertainer who is masquerading as a presidential candidate. Trump has turned the Republican primary into his own reality show.

Sen. Sanders has consistently criticized the media for their coverage of the election. In August, Sanders said, “I want you to talk about and force discussion about climate change. Do you think you do that enough? I would like you to force discussion of poverty in America. I have talked over and over and over again that 51 percent of African-American kids are unemployed or underemployed. You think that’s an important issue? I do. Are you going to discuss it?” The data shows that the corporate media is not going to give any coverage to Sanders or the issues. Bernie Sanders is a huge threat to the corporate media, which is why they are ignoring his campaign.

Why Rappers Like Killer Mike and Scarface Are ENDORSING Bernie Sanders for President

Bernie Sanders may not be the hippest of presidential hopefuls but his newest supporter should earn him some street cred. Rapper Bun B endorsed the Vermont senator for president in a conversation with Fat Tony and Mark Sonzala during the recent premiere of Sonzala's Hip Hop for Bernie Sanders podcast, Billboard reports.

The outspoken MC announced that he was backing Sanders, saying, "[Being a part of this podcast] also gives me an opportunity to let other people know from the hip-hop community that it's okay to start voicing your opinion about a candidates."

"I keep hearing a lot of people saying like, 'Well the election's not coming till next year so it's all good' but it's important to start stating your opinion and choosing a side very early because everybody needs numbers now," Bun continues. "These people need their supporters to stand up for them now."

I'll never be afraid to show who I stand with and what I stand for. I'll never be afraid to choose a side. They don't scare me 1 bit.

Bun B isn't the only member of the hip-hop community who's standing up for Sanders. He joins rappers Killer Mike, Lil B and Scarface in publicly backing the Democratic hopeful. Killer Mike even spoke at Sanders rally in Atlanta last month.

"I am here as a proponent for a political revolution that says health care is a right of every citizen," he said as he introduced Sanders. "I am here because working class and poor people deserve a chance at economic freedom, and yes, if you work 40 hours a week, you should not be in poverty."

"In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that Senator Bernie Sanders is the right man to lead this country," he added, urging the crowd to, "Make sure that wherever you go, you take the name, the ideas, the philosophy, and the ideology of Bernie Sanders there."

"And you make sure when you leave, they are on fire, because they have felt the Bern."

12:07 PM - 30 Aug 2015 · Waterloo, IA, United States

On August 30 2015, The Waterloo Courier profiled the Rev. Frantz Whitfield and his switch of support from Clinton to Bernie Sanders.

~snip~

Whitfield, a pastor at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, had been a vocal and loyal supporter of the Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton since her first bid in 2008, but as of last week, he’s decided to back her main challenger Bernie Sanders.

Whitfield’s decision, announced on social media site Twitter, did not come lightly. He remembers being impressed with Sanders when he heard the Vermont independent speak at a conference in New York in April, but he still maintained his loyalty to Clinton. It wasn’t until Whitfield recently looked at Sanders’ priorities -- at the urging of a local organizer -- that his support began to waver.

MORE Americans SUPPORT Bernie Sanders Than The Donald -- But He Gets 1/23 The TV Coverage

~snip~

The other day, Nate Silver -- the polling guru who now runs the 538.com website -- turned me on to an interesting point related to Trump, the other candidates, and media coverage.

Nate Silver Verified account @NateSilver538

There are (slightly) more Bernie supporters than Trump ones, but Trump has gotten 23X more network news coverage.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix....

First point: There's considerable evidence that millions more Americans support Bernie Sanders (which means, of course, that even more support Hillary Clinton) than support Trump. How can this be? Look at the early polling numbers. Right now, Trump's national level of support -- according to the average compiled by Real Clear Politics -- is 30.4 percent of GOP primary voters, while Sanders, sitting in second place among national Democrats, has a level of support of 30.8 percent. But then remember this: There are more Democrats (32 percent of Americans, according to Pew) than Republicans (23 percent). Which backs out up the first point: That Sanders has millions more supporting him than does Trump. Again, you ask: How can this be? That's because television gives people a very warped perspective. An outfit called the Tyndall Report tracks coverage on the nightly newscasts of the major networks; despite their declining viewership, it can be argued that this is a good barometer for how the U.S. mainstream media views the world (and a heck of a lot easier to track than the monster that is cable news). And the Tyndall Report's unsurprising conclusion is that Trump has stolen the show.

The group found that -- even with more than 20 candidates in the field for most of the year -- Trump has gotten more than a quarter of all the network news coverage of the presidential race. In fact, Trump has received more coverage than the entire Democratic field -- even though Hillary Clinton (who, again, has the most overall support, by far) has the second-most face time. Trump's total airtime was 234 minutes in 2015. And Bernie Sanders -- who, remember, is supported by more voters than Trump -- has had just 10 minutes of network airtime. That's less than 1/23 of what Trump received. Look, there's no rule that news coverage need be exactly equal to the candidate's level of support -- indeed, at this stage voters should be learning about all the candidates, including the underdogs. But this is way out of whack. Is it "newsworthy" that a candidate with fascist tendencies saying completely outrageous things is the leader in one of America's political parties? Sure. But events like last night's Don Lemon "exclusive" suggest it's all just one big reality show.

Meanwhile, you'd think the fact that a large voting bloc of Americans enthusiastically support a candidate who brands himself a "democratic socialist" would also be newsworthy. But Sanders got to this point by being serious -- promising to tax Wall Street and using the proceeds for free tuition at public universities, for example. That idea was pretty electrifying to the folks I met at Bernie Sanders' rallies this fall, but apparently isn't the boffo ratings grabber that a bogus claim of "thousands and thousands" of Muslims cheering 9/11 from New Jersey is. These editorial decisions are warping American democracy. With 11 months until the final countdown, no one knows where this thing is going. If it all goes south, people will point fingers of blame toward Trump and maybe -- fairly or not -- to the so-called "low information voter" so quick to jump on the Trump bandwagon. But no one will have more to answer for than the so-called "deciders" of America's mainstream media.

Young Democrats PREFER Bernie Sanders, New Poll Finds

Millennials, especially those who feel disenchanted about their own future, are gravitating toward outsider presidential candidates, according to a poll released Thursday by Harvard University's Institute of Politics. The survey showed 41 percent of millennials who gave themselves at least a 50-50 chance of voting in the Democratic primary support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), while 35 percent prefer Hillary Clinton. Just 9 percent say Sanders' description of himself as a Democratic socialist makes them less likely to support him.

Donald Trump and Ben Carson were leading among young Republicans, with 22 percent and 20 percent respectively, even though a majority of the potential GOP voters considered neither man qualified to be president, according to the survey. (The poll was conducted in late October and early November; since that time, Carson has fallen significantly in other national polls that include all age ranges.) Supporters of both Trump and Sanders have something in common: Most say that the idea of the American dream is dead for them personally, unlike the backers of other candidates.

Young Americans overall are almost evenly split on the promise of the American dream, with 49 percent saying it's alive for them, and 48 percent saying it's dead. Not all groups, though, are equally pessimistic. Along with candidate choice, the survey found that education level matters -- college graduates are 16 percentage points more likely than those who never went to college to say their American dream remains intact.

The Harvard survey found rising hawkishness among young Americans following the Paris terror attacks. Those polled before the attacks were evenly split between supporting or opposing the U.S. sending ground troops to fight ISIS. Sixty percent of those recontacted after the attacks, however, supported the idea. Yet few want to serve themselves. More than 60 percent of those polled both before and after the Paris attacks said they would definitely not sign up for military service, even if the U.S. needed additional troops.
