Hillary Clinton Is Pro Gun Control, But She's Also BIG on Arms Deals

While touting her gun control record and lambasting rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' firearm policy, Hillary Clinton keeps under wraps her heavy-handed involvement in the arms trade during her time as America's top diplomat. Sanders, although never Secretary of State, hasn't advocated for major arms deals between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, or any other warmongering country for that matter. According to an investigation by journalists David Sirota and Andrew Perez of the International Business Times, Clinton not only rubber-stamped major weapon deals with 20 countries that donated to her and her husband's philanthropic arm, the Clinton Foundation, but also approved nearly double the amount of arms sales to those same 20 countries as the State Department of George W. Bush's second term.

Under Clinton's leadership, the State Department approved $165 billion worth of commercial arms sales to 20 nations whose governments have given money to the Clinton Foundation, according to an IBTimes analysis of State Department and foundation data. That figure -- derived from the three full fiscal years of Clinton's term as Secretary of State (from October 2010 to September 2012) -- represented nearly double the value of American arms sales made to the those countries and approved by the State Department during the same period of President George W. Bush's second term.

The investigation, which came out in May of this year, caused chatter online, but didn't result in Clinton facing any questions about her arms dealing record in the first two Democratic debates. It's important now, especially as we discuss mass violence at home, to ask Clinton if she'll pursue a reduction of firearms not only domestically but internationally. Judging by her fierce pursuit of a $29 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, a country which Human Rights Watch criticizes for violently oppressing women, it seems unlikely. According to the same International Business Times report, the Saudi deal's success was "personal" to Clinton.

YES: New York "People's Candidate" Zephyr Teachout ENDORSES Sen. Bernie Sanders!

Today has been a great day for Bernie Sanders! Along with today’s Working Families Party endorsement, past New York Working Families Party gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout (who gave the fight to Albany-machine Gov. Mario Cuomo) endorses Bernie Sanders! Never to assume positions without detailed explanations, Teachout gives 10 reasons why Sen. Bernie Sanders is the right candidate to be President:

Here are 10 reasons for my support:

1. Congressman Sanders voted against the Iraq war, showing judgment and leadership when it mattered, and has held consistent and careful foreign policy views.

2. Senator Sanders has been a leader on finance, supporting a new Glass Steagall and introducing his own bills to break up the big banks.

3. Senator Sanders has led the fight against the XL pipeline, and for wind, sun, geothermal, and all renewable sources of energy.

4. Congressman Sanders opposed NAFTA, and has been a leader in the opposition to the TPP. 5. He has spent his career fighting private prisons and overcriminalization.

6. He has always understood the vital role that unions and institutions play in a more equal America, and fought for workers' rights.

7. He has long fought against high-stakes standardized tests.

8. He is a lifelong advocate for veterans, and a leader in health clinics and access to dental care and basic services.

9. He always been practical, with a long career of working across all party lines with respect.

10. Most importantly, President Sanders would put fundamental reform--including public financing of elections--at the heart of what he does.

Zephyr goes on to say:

America is in pain, and democracy is in crisis. Twenty Americans have more money than the bottom half of Americans. According to the New York Times, 158 families made half of all the donations so far in the presidential race. We have a private campaign finance system gives private companies and billionaires control over government. That's not American democracy.

I endorse Sanders because of my deep patriotism, my belief that democracy is possible and a thriving economy is possible, and we don't need to beg at the feet of the wealthiest donors to have a collective life worth living. Sanders has always paid attention to the root threats: inequity and excess elite power. He always explained in patient detail the way that privately financed elections and outside spending totally destroy our democracy. There is too much fear in our political life: he brings big dreams instead.

If you are undecided or are a Hillary Clinton supporter, please read these words with care and deliberation. Democrats want change and more people are finding that change through research, deliberation, and social media. And the “change” candidate’s name is Senator Bernie Sanders.

One Simple Chart Shows How The Democratic Candidates’ Climate Plans Have DRASTICALLY Changed

When it comes to climate change and the 2016 Democratic presidential candidates, a lot has changed in the last five months. Back in July, ThinkProgress released a chart showing what voters could expect from the candidates when it came to tackling climate change, based on their public statements and official plans. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley had the most aggressive rhetoric by a landslide. At the time, he was the only candidate who called publicly for an eventual complete phase-out of fossil fuels, and more government regulation of carbon dioxide emissions in addition to the Clean Power Plan. Hillary Clinton, by contrast, was the only Democratic candidate who had not spoken out about the now-rejected Keystone XL pipeline, drilling in the Arctic, or tax breaks for fossil fuel companies. Fast forward to present, Clinton and her chief rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have amped up their rhetoric surrounding climate change and the environment. On Monday, Sanders released a comprehensive climate change plan specifically geared toward phasing out fossil fuel use. And in the last five months, Clinton has come out against Arctic drilling, against the Keystone XL pipeline, and against federal subsidies for oil companies. Here’s where the Democratic candidates stand on climate change issues now, compared to their public positions in July 2015:

~snip~

Clinton’s plan is focused heavily on clean energy investment, including a 700 percent increase in solar panel installations by 2021. Unlike her rivals, her plan does not call for any carbon pricing system or bans on offshore drilling. She has, however, expressed support for cap-and-trade — thought it’s not necessarily something she would pursue as president. One thing we added in this chart is each candidates’ position on fracking, a controversial technique where companies blast water, sand, and chemicals into underground shale rock to extract oil and gas. Sanders is the only candidate who has called for a total fracking ban. During his time as Maryland governor, O’Malley allowed fracking to move forward, but with strict environmental protections. Clinton has called for a fracking ban on public lands, but has also said the process is essential for a transition to a clean energy economy. Here’s the full list of the Democratic candidates’ positions now:

Does Hillary Clinton REALLY Oppose TPP? There Is A Test For That

On several occasions during Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, he promised to renegotiate free trade agreements including NAFTA and CAFTA. Obama later sent adviser Austan Goolsbee to Canada to privately reassure them he meant something other than what he said publicly (pdf)

~snip~

A reminder — "In 2008, for example, candidate Barack Obama repeatedly expressed his opposition to NAFTA." With candidate Sanders, we have a history of both vocal opposition and real, operational opposition. But with candidate Clinton? Many actions that look like support, with non-declarations either way. But Clinton has now declared her opposition to TPP. This suggests two questions:

How can we know she means it?
How can we leverage her opposition?

Turns out that Johnson's test answers both. Will Clinton Help Us Defeat TPP? Johnson again:

Many Democrats remain skeptical and do not accept that Clinton meant it when she said she opposes passage of TPP. They wonder if Clinton only came out against TPP for strategic political reasons – to defuse Sanders and O’Malley and get union endorsements – or is she committed to stopping it? ...

The Test

Is Clinton really opposed to TPP? Or is she only saying this to get votes, ready to turn against Democrats on trade issues after the election, as too many others have done?

There is a test for that: What is Clinton willing to actually do to stop TPP? Actions vs. words. If she means what she is saying about reversing inequality, unrigging the system and restoring the path to a middle class the first thing she should be doing is fighting and fighting hard to stop TPP.

Will she actively and boldly lobby against TPP, calling and visiting and working to convince the representatives and senators who voted for fast-track trade authority to vote against TPP?

Will she appear at anti-TPP rallies? Will she speak out again and again at her own campaign events? Will she express opposition on radio and TV interviews? Will she work to rally the media and public in opposition?

Will she take it to the next level? Will she declare that Democrats in Congress who vote for TPP will be out of favor, will not receive reelection support, not get a job in her administration if she is elected?

Will she declare that her administration will fight to overturn the bad trade deals and policies that got us into this mess?

Shorter Johnson: You will know she tells the truth when she acts like it. Will she act like it? That's in the future, which means she can still not disappoint? Will she not-disappoint? Johnson provides a nice list of ways she can help with both of the goals above. She can let us know she's sincere and at the same time, help with the win by:

Actively and boldly lobbying against TPP
Appearing at anti-TPP rallies
Declaring that congressional Democrats who vote for TPP will be out of favor, will not receive reelection support, not get a job in her administration if she is elected

What Democratic voter wouldn't love to see those things happen? Every Clinton supporter should be lobbying her hard to make them occur.

Telling The TRUTH Does NOT A Hit Piece Make

Telling the truth is a public service.

If you are a blogger, a writer or just a concerned citizen, and you see a significant number of democrats contemplating what you honestly believe to be a disaster, what are you supposed to do? Do you speak up at the risk of offending people you care about? Do you risk losing friends by speaking the truth as you see it, or remain silent and let the disaster unfold?

You know my answer.

The following are indisputable, undeniable, irrefutable facts. I say and have said some harsh things about Hillary. My intent is not to be mean, only factual. I take no joy in being harsh. My one and only intent is to tell the truth as I see it as best I possibly can. If it weren’t all so damned important, I wouldn’t be yappin’ at ya about it (bear in mind I know this hurts and I’m sorry):

Hillary is a multi-millionaire one percenter.

She is closely tied to Wall Street and the Military Establishment.

She has been paid millions in speaking fees from the likes of Goldman Sachs.

She has raised millions from mega-corporations including the Pharmaceutical, Insurance and Fossil Fuel Industries.

She has raised millions for the Clinton foundation from the Saudis and other foreign powers.

She has come out against single-payer universal health care.

She has attacked Bernie for being too liberal.

She speaks of taxes like a republican.

She is widely known to be a war hawk.

She voted to authorize the Invasion of Iraq, the biggest foreign policy blunder in U.S. History and an unmitigated disaster that continues to unfold in the Middle East to this day costing hundreds of thousands of innocent lives and trillions of dollars that could have been used to help the American people and alleviate human suffering, not cause more of it.

She has been closely associated with human rights/military disasters in Colombia, Honduras, Iraq, Libya and Syria. Calling it CT or RW slander doesn’t make it so. It’s well documented history.

She is calling for more war, not less.

Google any of those things for all the proof you need. Those are facts. I know they're tough to swallow. A lot of people want us to turn a blind eye. Why would we? And what price would we pay? How could any peace-loving person support this? The following are opinions, but opinions based on the aforementioned facts: HRC is a defender and proponent of the status quo, not a challenger of it. She is beholden to the very same powerful special interests we have all seen undermine our democracy and corrupt our government. She is determined to broaden and intensify the world war that is developing. She does not want peace. Nothing could be clearer.

~snip~

What would be the value of holding my tongue to remain friendly with those who don’t share my views, if the situation is as dire as I believe it to be? The fate of the nation and the world are more important than your feelings or mine. What happens next is more important than party unity or team spirit. This is a critical point in history like no other. This election is no doubt the most important ever. And we're not just saying that this time.

We are staring extinction in the face and those who suggest otherwise are just kidding themselves. And since this election will demonstrate/determine how seriously we are going to take climate change and the imperative of swearing off fossil fuels, bullshit wars and etcetera, it will determine the fate of humanity itself.

This election could very well mean the difference between embracing WWIII and winding it down, between reversing climate change and being ravaged by it, between being run over and raped by TPP and Citizens United and reversing those disasters, between being shed of corporate influence and being dominated by it, between feeding the war machine and bringing it to heel. If you think all that matters is a democratic victory, you need to reexamine your priorities. This election will either change the tragic trajectory of our nation or confirm it. I can only hope that we come to our senses and do the right thing.

GALLUP: Bernie Sanders MOST Popular Candidate Among Asian-Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders enjoys the highest level of popularity for any major candidate of either party among Asian-Americans, with his favorable score exceeding his unfavorable score by 29 percentage points with this group. His competitor for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, is not far behind, with a net favorable score of +21, while all of the Republican candidates are more disliked than liked by the fastest-growing racial group in the country. This is especially true for Donald Trump, whose favorability among Asian-Americans is underwater by 43 points.

~snip~

In light of this, it may not be a surprise that of all the candidates running for president across both parties, Asian-Americans view the two leading Democratic contenders the most favorably. But among this group, Sanders is slightly ahead of his very well-known rival, despite her consistent lead in net favorability among Democrats and Democratic leaners nationally, and despite the fact that her favorable ratings are much higher among blacks and Hispanics than are Sanders'.

One reason Sanders may have an edge over Clinton, and indeed all other presidential candidates with this group, is the comparatively liberal hue of Asian-Americans. Over a third of Asian-Americans (35%) classify their ideology as liberal, much higher than the level of whites (22%), blacks (26%) and Hispanics (26%). Sanders himself is considered one of the most liberal senators in the chamber, and is generally better liked by U.S. adults who say they have a liberal political ideology.
