Though all political eyes in the U.S. are now focused like a laser beam on Tuesday's New York primary, the national trends remain startling when it comes to the intense competition between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Though Clinton led Sanders by sixty points when he entered the campaign less than a year ago, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Monday shows that lead has been "all but eliminated" with only two percentage points now separating the Democratic candidates. As the Journal reports, "The result continues a steady narrowing of the gap between the two Democratic candidates since January, when Mrs. Clinton led by 25 points, 59% to 34%. And it is a far cry from the way the race looked when Mr. Sanders began his campaign last year: In June 2015, a Journal/NBC poll found Mrs. Clinton leading by 60 percentage points, 75% to 15%." Conducted between April 10-14, with a margin of error of +/-5.3 percent, the latest poll reveals a virtual tie and offers a stunning look at how far the Sanders campaign has come against a candidate that many considered "inevitable":
Though the mainstream media continues to describe Clinton as holding the strategic advantage to ultimately win the Democratic nomination, Monday's poll is only the latest in a series of surveys to reveal growing support for Sanders and waning enthusiasm for the former secretary of state. As the Journal notes, the survey "shows Mrs. Clinton, should she win the nomination, is likely to head into the general election a weaker, more negatively viewed candidate than when she began her campaign." According to investigative journalist Robert Parry, who offered an analysis of Clinton's persistently low unfavorability ratings and how they could impact the Democrat's prospects come November, the party and its supporters risk a disaster if they continue to ignore what survey after survey has revealed.
Meanwhile, with attention focused on Tuesday's contest in New York, Sanders' campaign manager Jeff Weaver told the Guardian newspaper that even though the delegate-rich state is crucial, a loss in the state will not mean an end to the race.

ONCE Ahead By 60 Points, Hillary Clinton's National Lead Over Bernie Sanders Has DWINDLED TO ZERO

"While Clintons dismal approval ratings havent seemed to have shaken the Democratic establishment, which continues to line up behind her long-anticipated coronation, some outside analysts see the party leaders blindly marching toward a cliff," wrote Parry on Monday.
Parry continued:
Despite Sanderss string of victories, Clinton still leads him in elected delegates, but her daunting lead comes from her dominance of super-delegates, party insiders who are not chosen by primaries or caucuses but still get to vote at the convention. According to The Associated Press tally, Clinton has 1,289 elected delegates to Sanderss 1,045, but she has the backing of 469 super-delegates to Sanderss 31. To win requires 2,383 delegates.
So, if Clintons eventual nomination is inevitable, the Democrats will be putting up a candidate who is broadly disliked by the American people. That means a Clinton candidacy will require massive spending on negative ads to make the Republican candidate so frightening in the eyes of most Americans that they will vote for Clinton out of fear, not hope.

Clinton-DNC Joint Fundraising Raises Serious Campaign Finance Concerns
APRIL 18TH, 2016
NEW YORK U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders presidential campaign on Monday questioned serious apparent violations of campaign finance laws under a joint fundraising deal between Hillary Clintons campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
The questionable dealings were detailed in a letter from Brad Deutsch, the attorney for Sanders campaign, to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the DNC. The letter questioned whether the Clinton presidential campaign violated legal limits on donations by improperly subsidizing Clintons campaign bid by paying Clinton staffers with funds from the joint DNC-Clinton committee.
Unlike Clintons presidential campaign committee, Hillary for America, the joint committee may accept large donations of up to $356,100. The first $2,700 of this amount is eligible for transfer to the Clinton campaign, $33,400 can be transferred to the DNC, with any remaining amount, up to $10,000, to each participating state party. According to public disclosure reports, however, the joint Clinton-DNC fund, Hillary Victory Fund (HVF), appears to operate in a way that skirts legal limits on federal campaign donations and primarily benefits the Clinton presidential campaign.
The financial disclosure reports on file with the Federal Election Commission indicate that the joint committee invested millions in low-dollar, online fundraising and advertising that solely benefits the Clinton campaign. The Sanders campaign is particularly concerned that these extremely large-dollar individual contributions have been used by the Hillary Victory Fund to pay for more than $7.8 million in direct mail efforts and over $8.6 million in online advertising according to the letter to the DNC. Both outlays benefit the Clinton presidential campaign by generating low-dollar contributions that flow only to HFA [Hillary for America] rather than to the DNC or any of the participating state party committees.
The questionable outlays have grown to staggering magnitudes and can no longer be ignored, Deutsch added.
The expenditures on advertising and fundraising are at best an impermissible in-kind contribution from the DNC and the participating state party committees to Clintons presidential campaign, the letter said. At worst, using funds received from large-dollar donors who have already contributed the $2,700 maximum to HFA [Hillary for America] may represent an excessive contribution to HFA from these individuals.
In addition, the joint committee has paid the Clinton campaign committee $2.6 million ostensibly to reimburse the Clinton presidential campaign staff for time spent running the joint committee. The unusual arrangement, Deutsch said, raises equally serious concerns that joint committee funds, which are meant to be allocated proportionally among the participating committees, are being used to impermissibly subsidize HFA through an over-reimbursement for campaign staffers and resources.
While the use of joint fundraising agreements has existed for some time it is unprecedented for the DNC to allow a joint committee to be exploited to the benefit of one candidate in the midst of a contested nominating contest, said Jeff Weaver, Sanders campaign manager.

New Video Featuring Mark Ruffalo Highlights Sanders Brooklyn Roots
APRIL 18TH, 2016
NEW YORK U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders campaign on Monday released a new online video highlighting the Democratic candidates roots and upbringing in Brooklyn. The video features Sanders walking through the Brooklyn College campus where he spent his freshman year, talking with actor and environmentalist Mark Ruffalo.
Over images of Brooklyn from decades ago, Sanders discusses values and experiences gained from growing up in an immigrant community.
Many of us were the sons or grandchildren of immigrants. And the main shopping area was Kings Highway. And if you went shopping there, you saw would see people who had serial numbers on their arms, which was from Hitlers concentration camps, Sanders says.
The densely populated and diverse community Sanders grew up in had a large impact on the way he sees the world today. He explains, The strength of this country is the fact that we have so much diversity. And I think that we do better when we are a people who appreciate, who love, respect people from all over the world who bring their own values and traditions and become part of the American experience.
Sanders goes on to discuss the lessons he learned from his parents his fathers experience as an immigrant and his mothers desire to provide a better life for her children.
Asked about his role in anti-segregation efforts in Chicago, Sanders tells Ruffalo tells that he became involved out of a sense of justice.
The video ends with a discussion of Sanders accomplishments as mayor of Burlington, where he put the city on the path to becoming one of the most progressive cities in America, and his time in Congress where he was dubbed the Amendment King for his unparalleled record of passing roll call amendments in the House.
One of the beautiful parts of this campaign, Sanders concludes, is your dreams and my dreams, you may have thought there were very few of us. Turns out we are the majority of the people in this country. And people now through this campaign, I think, are sensing that they are not alone. And thats a big deal.

On the eve of the New York primary election, Councilman Ritchie Torres of the Bronx announced his surprise endorsement of Bernie Sanders for President today. Torres invoked Sanderss progressive credentials as the reason for his endorsement:
Torres grew up in Bronx public housing, and had previously invited all Presidential candidates to tour public housing to see for themselves the toll taken by the last several decades of diminishing public financial support. Both Hillary Clinton and Sanders accepted and carried out NYC public housing visits the last few days. Torres noted that personally hosting Senator Sanderss visit affected him emotionally quite deeply:
Torres, himself a millenial and the youngest member of the New York City Council, had spent months struggling with the decision of which Democratic candidate to endorse. In an interview last week, he stated that he had yet to decide, saying My heart is with Bernie but my head is with Hillary. He expressed praise for the front-runner as well:
He was eventually won over by Sanderss bold progressive agenda and specific commitment to work to close the federal funding gap in public housing. Torres was impressed by the outreach effort by the Sanders campaign, who contacted him weeks ago in his capacity as the chair of the NYC Council public housing committee, and asked him both to host the visit and to give input into Sanderss own public housing plan:

BRONX Councilman Torres LEADS Sanders Visit to Brownsville Public Housing, Then ENDORSES Sanders.
On the eve of the New York primary election, Councilman Ritchie Torres of the Bronx announced his surprise endorsement of Bernie Sanders for President today. Torres invoked Sanderss progressive credentials as the reason for his endorsement:
Bernie represents a special phenomenon in progressive politics. He singularly has made inequality and poverty the focal point of the presidential election that is his contribution to progressive politics and hes energizing young people to an extent never seen before, Torres said, in an interview with POLITICO New York.
Torres, who grew up in public housing in the Bronx, sent a letter to all the presidential candidates last week asking them to tour New York City Public Housing Authority buildings to see a glimpse of what decades of federal divestment has done to the citys public housing stock.

I was just moved it meant the world to the residents there to have a presidential candidate tour their homes, to have a presidential candidate come to Brownsville and say I see you and I hear you but above all else Im willing to invest in you and your home, Torres said.

I have immense, deep respect for Secretary Clinton the endorsement is an affirmation of Bernie Sanders rather than a negation of Hillary Clinton, Torres said. Im endorsing [Sanders] because of what he symbolizes, not because of calculations about his viability but the values that lie at the center of his campaign.

Danny Glover: HE'S WITH US | Bernie Sanders
Bernie and I have long shared a commitment to justice. Weve both walked the picket line with workers striking for better conditions. Weve both opposed wealth inequality and corporate greed. Weve both pushed for a foreign policy that keeps us safe instead of creating endless wars.
But when I saw images of him getting arrested for protesting segregation, I realized that Bernie is truly one of us. There he was, involved in a struggle that I had dreamed about joining as a child. And he continues in that tradition. I couldn't feel prouder to be in New York helping him to become our next president of the United States.
