South Carolina people are still not out of danger.

Flood waters move toward coast, parts of I-95 remain closed

It could take until the weekend for the threat of flooding to ease in storm-tattered South Carolina, where a senator warned of a potential billion-dollar cleanup bill.
Rivers rose and dams bulged as storm water from days of heavy rains made its way to the Atlantic Ocean, causing a second round of flooding downstream.
Gov. Nikki Haley paid a visit to the coast, which she said still would be in danger for another 24-48 hours. “We’re holding our breath and saying a prayer.”
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham warned the disaster could “break the bank” of federal emergency funds, possibly topping more than $1 billion.
In another image of the storm’s otherworldly toll, state officials said caskets have popped out of the ground in 11 instances in six counties.
Haley said 62 dams across the state were being monitored, and 13 already had failed. However, she said South Carolina was fortunate that those represented only a small fraction of 2,000 or so dams regulated by the state.

A lot of my relatives live near Lynches River. My brother and nearby cousins are watching the water rise. It had been going down or a short while. They will have to get through today and tomorrow. Even then, dams around the state may still fail and add to the mess. The family cemetery has been under water. Who knows what has happened to it?

Evacuations are continuing in many places.

Roads are being opened but many will have to be repaired. In addition, some may be closed again and new ones may collapse as time passes and they develop problems that aren't apparent now.
I would be careful when crossing any bridge. Maybe carry a life jacket. I'm only half-way kidding because so many are in poor shape.

Graham and the rest of the elected officials need to SHUT.UP! Haley is trying but only because she would be dragged through the flood water if she wasn't doing anything.

Johnsonville, S.C. - Most people who know of the "The Neck" near Johnsonville know it as the site of an annual Christmas Eve party and parade that draws thousands who watch and participate in a somewhat raucous affair.

But the Neck, a community of homes for nearly 200 people, is also a close-knit group of family members and friends who take care of one another. They look after each another and their things, and on Monday and Tuesday, rescued their neighbors.

The rescues were necessary because the homes in the Neck became inundated with three-four feet of water from the flooding river.

The river was flooded by some 18 inches of rain over a four-day period. Before the rains and flood, the Lynches was at one of its lowest stages in years because of a drought.

Downstream from the water gauges that measure the river’s height at Effingham, the water was still rising at Johnsonville Tuesday afternoon. A higher than expected flow on the Lynches closed U.S. Highway 52 to travelers at Effingham beginning about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

On Sunday evening and into Monday the Lynches was making its way into the homes of those living close to its banks, from communities such as Effingham, Coward, Scranton, Prospect, and on to the Neck. Like many others, those residents eventually had to take to boats to get people, pets, and things to safety.

It was about 8 p.m. Sunday night when folks on Half Moon Road, about two miles west of First Neck Road, evacuated to higher ground.

There are still evacuations because the rivers are cresting. People out in the country have major problems because the roads are out.

In the past week, severe rainfall has rewritten the record books across South Carolina, and west of Columbia, officials had to do something they hadn't done since 1969.

They opened the floodgates of Saluda Dam, also known as the Lake Murray Dam, an earthen dam built in 1930 to hold back millions of gallons of water that would create Lake Murray.

There are many rumors about the Lake Murray damn. Lawd! It bet not break.
It is not nearly over. The rivers are rising as the water flows toward the coast. My cousins are worried now about where they live. Evacuations are ongoing.

Columbia and Charleston are getting the national press but (added video of rural SC flooding)

I have gotten messages from cousins out in the country. Major problems as the rivers and swampy areas rise. Many people have been evacuated. A lot of these are poorer people who didn't have much to begin with.
In an area near my brother, deer were seen shoulder deep in water. The rivers have to crest too.

It's still raining. There are bands coming in from the ocean.
I don't have water in the apartment as far as I can tell. There may be some around the edges, but I haven't seen it. Knock on wood.

I talked to my brother in the woods. He told me he was ok and on high ground. I asked him for his definition of high ground in a monsoon. Then he told me that in ye olden dayes, the cows and mules were keot where his house is when it flooded. I told him that in ye olden dayes they didn't get this much water and he ain't got no cows and horses. The roads are out. He does seem ok.

This is much worse than Hugo. The extent of the damage won't be known until the water recedes if then. The water from the streams and rivers also has to flow down to the coast. The rivers won't reach flood stage until later in the week.

The whole state is flooded. The midlands, the NE and the coast got the worst of it. This is awful.

I have changed my cats' names to Friday and Friday Night.

If you were coming to or through South Carolina, don't.

Roads and parts of interstates are closed. People are bein rescued all over the state. It's very bad in Columbia, anywhere near the coast, and NE SC.
Check the roads if you have to travel.
This whole damn state is washing away for real. That's not even a joke.

That damn dam that broke in SC is 5 miles from me.

My maternal relatives are buried in a cemetery very close to a swamp. It is on a bank area that never gave us a problem as far as water level. That may have changed. I hope they are still in the ground.

There is flooding near the Fairfield, SC nuclear plant.

state has ID'd 57 spots in SC interstates that cld fail/flood in a 100 yr flood. What's happening now is close to that map.

They may shut down the entire interstate system in this state.
