Chicken killers leave at least 300,000 dead, millions in damage to SC farms

Only an estimated 500 birds survived the attack, and they will be shipped out in coming days, Coker said.

One of Coker’s employees discovered the dead chickens a week ago Tuesday. He said he noticed a large amount of steam coming from the sides and the roofs of the chicken houses when he arrived at work around 7 a.m. He immediately knew something was wrong.

When he walked into one of the chicken houses, he said it was like a sheet of white – almost like snow – that wasn’t moving. The ventilation was shut off and the temperature inside of the house was turned up to 115 degrees.

I am not happy with the way many animals are raised en masse. However, to roast these chickens alive is beyond me.

Watch a Swedish hockey team rock rainbow uniforms in support of LGBT rights:

Among Swedish hockey fans, Orebro goalie Julius Hudacek is well known for his sometimes outlandish post-win celebrations. He's mimed ice fishing, played leapfrog and fallen over riding his stick like a skateboard. His antics have even spawned the hashtag #HudaShow.

Hudacek put all that energy toward a good cause this weekend. After a 4-2 victory over Frolunda, the goaltender led his team in a performance of "Y.M.C.A." on ice while wearing Village People costumes over multi-colored jerseys the team donned to support LGBT rights.

Aside from the uniforms, the team and the organization's entire staff marched in the city's pride parade and held a lecture on LGBT topics. They also encouraged fans to wear rainbow pins and buy limited-edition game merchandise.

"Pride game is a way for us to show social responsibility and take a clear stand for the equal value. Pride game is more than just a game, more than just a stunt," an English translation of a statement on the team's website reads.

Treating Frostbite (Especially important in this weather)

Frostbite Overview
Frostbite occurs when tissues freeze. This condition happens when you are exposed to temperatures below the freezing point of skin. Hypothermia is the condition of developing an abnormally low body temperature. Frostbite and hypothermia are both cold-related medical emergencies.

The condition has long been recognized. A 5000-year-old pre-Columbian mummy discovered in the Chilean mountains offers the earliest documented evidence of frostbite. More recently, Napoleon's surgeon general, Baron Dominique Larrey, provided the first description of the mechanisms of frostbite in 1812, during his army's retreat from Moscow. He also noted the harmful effects of the freeze-thaw-freeze cycle endured by soldiers who would warm their frozen hands and feet over the campfire at night only to refreeze those same parts by the next morning.

Although frostbite used to be a military problem, it is now a civilian one as well. The nose, cheeks, ears, fingers, and toes are most commonly affected. Everyone is susceptible, even people who have been living in cold climates for most of their lives. Some groups of people at greatest risk for frostbite and hypothermia include those:

who spend a great deal of time outdoors, such as the homeless, hikers, hunters, etc.;
under the influence of alcohol;
who are elderly without adequate heating, food, and shelter;
who are exhausted or excessively dehydrated;
who are mentally ill.

Oliver Sachs has terminal cancer.

A MONTH ago, I felt that I was in good health, even robust health. At 81, I still swim a mile a day. But my luck has run out — a few weeks ago I learned that I have multiple metastases in the liver. Nine years ago it was discovered that I had a rare tumor of the eye, an ocular melanoma. Although the radiation and lasering to remove the tumor ultimately left me blind in that eye, only in very rare cases do such tumors metastasize. I am among the unlucky 2 percent.

I feel grateful that I have been granted nine years of good health and productivity since the original diagnosis, but now I am face to face with dying. The cancer occupies a third of my liver, and though its advance may be slowed, this particular sort of cancer cannot be halted.

It is up to me now to choose how to live out the months that remain to me. I have to live in the richest, deepest, most productive way I can. In this I am encouraged by the words of one of my favorite philosophers, David Hume, who, upon learning that he was mortally ill at age 65, wrote a short autobiography in a single day in April of 1776. He titled it “My Own Life.”
