WaPo: New Bolton revelations show Trump's trial is more corrupt than we thought

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/01/31/new-bolton-revelations-show-trumps-trial-is-more-corrupt-than-we-thought/

By Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent

Even as the Senate was set to begin debating whether to call witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial, the New York Times published a new revelation contained in an upcoming book from the first and most important witness Democrats would like to call, John Bolton.

The new report shows just how absurd is the GOP claim that there’s no more to be learned about the Ukraine scandal and that we should wrap the trial up as quickly as possible:

More than two months before he asked Ukraine’s president to investigate his political opponents, President Trump directed John R. Bolton, then his national security adviser, to help with his pressure campaign to extract damaging information on Democrats from Ukrainian officials, according to an unpublished manuscript by Mr. Bolton.

Mr. Trump gave the instruction, Mr. Bolton wrote, during an Oval Office conversation in early May that included the acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, the president’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani and the White House counsel, Pat A. Cipollone, who is now leading the president’s impeachment defense.

Mr. Trump told Mr. Bolton to call Volodymyr Zelensky, who had recently won election as president of Ukraine, to ensure Mr. Zelensky would meet with Mr. Giuliani, who was planning a trip to Ukraine to discuss the investigations that the president sought, in Mr. Bolton’s account. Mr. Bolton never made the call, he wrote.

First, this shows that Trump’s chief counsel for his impeachment defense, Pat Cipollone, might have been a fact witness to the very corrupt scheme for which Trump was impeached -- and for which the Senate is now set to acquit him.

Stephen Gillers, a professor at New York University School of Law, told us that this raises serious questions about the propriety of Cipollone’s role as Trump’s chief counsel. As Gillers wrote in a recent piece, Cipollone had an obligation, at a minimum, to disclose all his own knowledge of the facts surrounding the case.

Coronavirus: US declares national health emergency, with quarantine order issued for nearly 200 Amer

The United States has declared a national public health emergency over the coronavirus outbreak, as the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has quarantined 195 Americans who were evacuated from Wuhan, China.

"The United States government will implement temporary measures to increase our abilities to detect and contain the coronavirus proactively and aggressively," said Health and Human Services secretary Alex Azar, during a press conference in the White House.

The decision to raise that alarm came just hours after those 195 people were evacuated, in an a rare mandatory order for Americans that has not been issued in more than 50 years.

The disease, so far, has spread to 10,000 people globally, and has been confirmed in patients in a growing number of countries that now include the US, Canada, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Finland, Japan and India, among other countries.

Among the things Parnas would testify to, per letter from his lawyer to McConnell obtained by @MaddowBlog:

Plot to dig up dirt on the Bidens included Trump, Pence, Perry, Pompeo, Barr, Graham, Nunes, Harvey, Solomon, diGenova, Victoria Toensing & America First (super PAC).

One new detail I haven't heard before in letter from Parnas's lawyer:
That Parnashelped arrange the Trump-Zelenskiy meeting at UN & was in "constant contact" with Giuliani & Yermak during the meeting.

That meeting (9/25) came as the Ukraine scandal was already coming to light
