Oakland rally estimated at 60,000 marchers

Tens of thousands of people are marching in downtown Oakland today for the Women's March, one of hundreds happening worldwide in response to the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The crowd stretched blocks and blocks through Oakland, encompassing the entire western shore of Lake Merritt, from Grand Avenue to Broadway and all the way to Frank Ogawa Plaza. The California Highway Patrol and the city of Oakland estimated the crowd at 60,000. The march in Oakland is one of several across the Bay Area today.

Organizers called for an event in Washington, D.C., as a show of unity in the wake of the election of Trump in November. Officials in Washington estimated there was 500,000 people participating in the march there.

After sporadic rain Friday drenched Bay Area protests of Trump's inauguration, the clouds parted this morning as marchers began to gather at the Lake Merritt BART station at about 10 a.m. Despite running extra long trains, BART had delays coming into Lake Merritt because of the extremely crowded station.

750,000 people attending Women's Rally downtown LA. Organizers expected 80,000.

Some 750,000 people flooded the streets of downtown Los Angeles Saturday morning to march in solidarity with the Women's March on Washington, according to organizers for the event.

Event organizers for the Women's March-Los Angeles say the day is designed to unify communities and make a stand for "justice and equity for all."

The mission statement for the march reads in part, "We stand together in solidarity for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health and our families -- recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country."

The march comes a day after Donald Trump's inauguration. Although it appears nowhere on the site for the event, the march appears to be in direct response to the election of Trump. But organizers have to be clear to point out the march will be "pro-woman" rather than "anti-Trump.

In Chicago, the rally grew so big that the march was canceled

CHICAGO — In Grant Park, tens of thousands gathered for a rally that grew so large that organizers had to halt the planned short march through the city's downtown.

Unseasonably warm weather appeared to help bolster attendance.

The Chicago Transit Authority added extra cars to the city's L train service to help transport the mass of people. Still, the trains were packed to the gills.

Organizers, who projected more than 50,000 demonstrators, said the crowd appeared to have swelled to 150,000. It was held on the same site that former President Barack Obama used for his 2008 Election Night victory party.

"Our march route is flooded. There is no safe way to march. We are just going to sing and dance and make our voices heard here," rally and march co-chairwoman Ann Scholhmer told the crowd at Jackson and Columbus drives just before 11 a.m., according to the Chicago Tribune.
