Trump Thought Pelosi Was Bluffing

“White House officials were caught off guard Wednesday by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally disinviting President Trump from giving his State of the Union address from the House chamber, leaving them scrambling for a response,” CNN reports.

“White House officials had believed Pelosi wanted only to postpone Trump’s State of the Union for political reasons after she sent a letter to him last week asking him to delay the address until after the partial government shutdown ended. The plan from administration officials was to call her bluff by pressing forward with plans to deliver the speech, including a new letter on Wednesday that they hoped would force her hand.”

“Now they’re left exploring alternative venues.”

Dell CEO rejects Ocasio-Cortez's tax plan at Davos

Dell CEO Michael Dell tore into Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) proposal to implement a 70 percent marginal tax rate on the nation’s top earners, saying it would not help the U.S. economy grow.

“My wife and I set up a foundation about 20 years ago and we would have contributed quite a bit more than a 70 percent tax rate on my annual income. And I feel much more comfortable with our ability as a private donation to allocate those funds than I do giving them to the government,” he said Wednesday at the Davos Economic Forum.

“So no, I’m not supportive to that and I don’t think it would help the growth of the U.S. economy.”

Ocasio-Cortez sparked widespread debate when she floated the idea earlier this month, with even the most progressive members of Congress avoiding voicing support for the 70 percent rate while agreeing that the top income earner should pay more taxes.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), a co-chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said she thinks “the fact that people are not paying their fair share is a problem and the millionaires and billionaires are the ones where that has to rest.”

“My view is one that there are better ways of getting to the revenue” than a 70-percent tax on high incomes, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the vice chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said.

Florida Man arrested after drawing gun, using racial slurs during MLK Day event

A Florida man was arrested on Monday after a video showed him pulling out a gun and yelling racial slurs at a group of African-Americans participating in an anti-gun violence event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Mark Bartlett, 51, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit shortly after the confrontation, NBC Miami News reported.

The video, shared by local nonprofit group Dream Defenders, appears to show a woman fighting with a group of riders participating in the “Wheels Up, Guns Down” event.
The annual event involves riders on ATVs, dirt bikes and bicycles taking to the streets South Florida to honor King’s birthday and raise awareness about gun violence. The event often causes tension because the vehicles block traffic, the outlet noted.

Kamala Harris raises $1.5 million in first 24 hours

Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign raised $1.5 million in its first 24 hours, her campaign aides told POLITICO, a massive haul for the first-term senator from California that tied Bernie Sanders’ one-day total from his 2016 presidential campaign.

Small-dollar donations are an early litmus test in what is anticipated to be a crowded Democratic field. Others who have opened exploratory committees, including fellow Sens. Elizabeth Warren, on New Year’s Eve, and Kirsten Gillibrand, last week, have yet to make public any of their campaign fundraising numbers.

Harris, who announced her candidacy on Monday, crossed the $1 million threshold before 7:30 p.m. and raised $1.5 million from 38,000 donors, her aides said. As a point of comparison, Sanders’ early 2015 cash haul came from about 35,000 donors who gave an average of $43.50, his campaign said at the time.

Harris’ 2020 average online contribution was $37.

Harris’ campaign in the first 12 hours made $110,000 in revenue from its online merchandise store that sells t-shirts, hats and tote bags — breaking the single-day, single-candidate record for sales by the vendor, Bumperactive. The company worked for the likes of Beto O’Rourke and Andrew Gillum in the 2018 midterms, according to published reports.

AOC, other progressive Democrats named to powerful House Oversight Committee

4 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ro Khanna (Calif.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) — were named Tuesday night to the House Oversight Committee, according to multiple reports.

Why it matters: The influential Oversight Committee, led by Rep. Elijah Cummings, will serve as a powerful check on the Trump administration, which has accrued a laundry list of potential subpoena targets over the past two years. The four new members — all of which, besides Khanna, are freshmen — have been exceptionally outspoken in their criticism of the administration, with Tlaib in particular making headlines recently for her expletive-laced call to impeach President Trump.
