Candidates 2017: Jannie Chung for NJ Assembly

The first Korean-American Councilwoman in her hometown’s history, Jannie Chung is running to bring a Democratic voice to a historically Republican district.

Jannie is a Councilwoman from Closter, a town she has lived in for close to 30 years. In a town that has a Korean population of over 20% Jannie was proud to be the first Korean American elected official. One of Jannie’s greatest distinctions comes from being the only member of her law school graduating class to start a frozen yogurt business. Being legally trained and having the practical skills of entrepreneurship have proven to be useful in the art of conflict resolution, diplomacy and problem solving. Jannie’s personal passions can be easily identified through the volunteer work she has done. She has assisted at free immigration clinics organized by the Minkwon Center, participated in the Volunteer Lawyer for a Day program with the NYC Civil Courts in the consumer credit part and housing court and has also been a SCORE counselor in Bergen County. Jannie continues to do pro bono consulting for small business owners as well as contracts for a small financial firm. She is also the self-anointed Queen mediator between her 6-year-old son Remus and her 39-year-old husband Henry. Her two witnesses are Oreo the Yorkie and Mimi the Chiweenie (Dachshund Chihuahua mix). Jannie currently sits on the Public Safety Committee Human Resources Committee, Zoning Board, Board of Health and is the Chair of the Public Works Committee. Jannie is also on Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s Women’s Advisory Council. When she has a few minutes to spare, you can find Jannie diligently working on her golf swing at the range or dining at her favorite local eats. She also loves hiking, swimming, Karaoke, puzzles and top 10 lists.

Trump Just Started a Nuclear Crisis With Iran

President Donald Trump on Friday did what he does best: He threw a temper tantrum on national TV. To address what he called “the increasing menace posed by Iran,” he announced his refusal to send Congress a routine certification required by law that Iran is keeping its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal. He also announced “additional sanctions on the regime to block their financing of terror,” and promised, “We will deny the regime all paths to a nuclear weapon.” In doing so, Trump will start a new nuclear crisis, one that he has no idea how to solve—and which may end with Tehran following Pyongyang’s lead, testing thermonuclear weapons and long-range missiles that can strike the United States.

Trump claims he has good cause for not providing certification. “Importantly, Iran is not living up to the spirit of the deal,” he said on Friday. But Yukiya Amano, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is charged with monitoring and verifying the deal, was unequivocal last month: “The nuclear-related commitments undertaken by Iran under the [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] are being implemented.” Even one of Trump’s top generals, James Dunford of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says so.

The real crisis here is Trump’s fragile ego. As a candidate, he called the Iran nuclear deal an “embarrassment” and the “worst deal ever.” So nothing has been more humiliating to him to be required, under the Iran Nuclear Review Act, to certify that Iran is, in fact, keeping its promises. This amounts to requiring the president to admit, in writing, that he’s a windbag.

Trump has provided this certification twice—although only after a knock-down, drag-out fight with his advisers both times. A senior administration official told CNN last week that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson “has said the problem with the JCPOA is not the JCPOA,” adding, “It’s the legislation. Every 90 days the president must certify and it creates a political crisis. If the administration could put the nuclear deal in a corner, everyone could happily get back to work on dealing with everything else that is a problem with Iran.”

House: Ratings Changes in 12 Districts as Democrats Gain Momentum

President Trump and GOP control of Congress have sparked a 2018 Democratic candidate bonanza. Don't call it "recruitment:" for the most part, these aspirants decided to take the plunge on their own. Many are political newcomers; others have waited years for the right moment to run. And in light of national polling, it was only a matter of time before more GOP-held House seats joined the ranks of the vulnerable.

Over the past week, the Cook Political Report has met with dozens of Democratic candidates sporting impressive resumes, ranging from military veterans and former Obama administration officials to prosecutors and scientists. Much like the GOP's crop of candidates in 2010, only a handful were current or former elected officials. However, some campaigns have progressed more quickly than others and not all opportunities are created equal.

For example, Democrats are rightfully excited about former federal prosecutor Jay Hulings, 42, who has taken on drug cartels and public corruption in South Texas. He possesses the national security credentials to go toe to toe with GOP Rep. Will Hurd (TX-23), a former undercover CIA agent, and it doesn't hurt that he's politically close to the Castro brothers and married to a former Miss San Antonio. But he must also overcome a competitive primary and typically low Latino turnout in midterms.

VA-GOV: Obama to campaign for Northam

Former President Barack Obama will campaign for Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam in the gubernatorial race next week in Richmond.

The two men will host a rally together on Thursday evening.

Obama's long-planned entrance into the contest comes as the race is drawing more national attention. President Donald Trump recently endorsed former Republican National Committee Chair Ed Gillespie, and Vice President Mike Pence is set to campaign for Gillespie on Saturday in the state's southwest, while former Vice President Joe Biden will campaign in the state's Democratic-leaning D.C. suburbs on the same day.

Northam has a small but steady lead in public polling.

CA-SEN: California Senate leader to challenge Sen. Dianne Feinstein

Washington (CNN) California Democratic state Senate president Kevin de León intends to enter California's 2018 Senate race against Sen. Dianne Feinstein, three sources with knowledge of his plans say.

De León has begun calling labor leaders and elected officials to inform them of his plans, the sources said, and is expected to soon announce his campaign against Feinstein, a giant of California Democratic politics who has held the office since 1992.

The 50-year-old de León, who represents Los Angeles and is seen as a leading Latino voice in Democratic politics, is likely to campaign aggressively against President Donald Trump. He began signaling he could oppose Feinstein in late August, after she said Trump could "be a good president" and that he "can learn and change." Feinstein later clarified that she is "under no illusion that it's likely to happen and will continue to oppose his policies."

He will enter the race after a state legislative session in which California lawmakers pushed legislation targeted at Trump -- making California a "sanctuary state," sought to force Trump to release his tax returns by making it a requirement to appear on the state's ballots as a presidential candidate, and passed a resolution urging Trump "to publicly apologize to all Americans for his racist and bigoted behavior."
