GA-SEN: Herschel Walker Urged Woman to Have a 2nd Abortion, She Says

ATLANTA — A woman who has said Herschel Walker, the Republican Senate nominee in Georgia, paid for her abortion in 2009 told The New York Times that he urged her to terminate a second pregnancy two years later. They ended their relationship after she refused.

In a series of interviews, the woman said Mr. Walker had barely been involved in their now 10-year-old son’s life, offering little more than court-ordered child support and occasional gifts.

The woman disclosed the new details about her relationship with Mr. Walker, who has anchored his campaign on an appeal to social conservatives as an unwavering opponent of abortion even in cases of rape and incest, after the former football star publicly denied that he knew her. He called her “some alleged woman” in a radio interview on Thursday.

The Times is withholding the name of the woman, who insisted on anonymity to protect her son.

GA-SEN: Herschel Walker's Wife Reaches Out to His Abortion Accuser

Herschel Walker has maintained that he still doesn’t know the identity of the woman claiming she had an abortion after she and Walker got pregnant in 2009. But on Friday afternoon, the woman finally heard from a top Walker campaign surrogate: Julie Blanchard, the candidate’s wife.

In text a message exchange shared with The Daily Beast, the woman—who says she later had a child with Walker against his wishes in 2012—told Blanchard it was “cruel” that Walker “continues to claim he doesn’t know me or the abortion he paid for.”

“He brought all of this on himself when he decided to get on a platform and denounce abortion and make a mockery of his children who have done NOTHING to deserve this,” wrote the woman.

“Shame on him,” she added.

The woman asked Blanchard if she had previously known about the abortion, or if she had known that Walker had also said it wasn’t the “right time” to have a child when they conceived three years later. (The woman went forward with the pregnancy despite Walker’s wishes.).

U.S. Auto Sales Point to Continued Demand

Consumer demand for new automobiles appears to be holding steady in the United States — at least for now — despite recent interest rate increases, concerns about the broader economy and record-high vehicle prices.

The latest evidence came Monday when General Motors said its new-vehicle sales in the U.S. market increased 24 percent in the third quarter, as higher sales of cars and certain sport-utility vehicles more than offset lower sales of full-size pickup trucks.

The automaker said it sold 555,580 light trucks and cars in the three-month period that ended Sept. 30, compared with 446,997 for the same period in 2021, when production of key components in Asia was constrained.

Supply chain issues have hampered the industry since the start of the pandemic, but G.M. said Monday that its access to computer chips had improved.

Europe Stock Futures Fall Amid UK Turmoil, Credit Suisse Woes

European stock futures fell amid concerns over economic and political turmoil in the UK, and as the challenges facing Credit Suisse Group AG weighed on sentiment.

December contracts on the Euro Stoxx 50 Index fell as much as 2.4% in Asian morning trading hours and FTSE 100 futures declined as much as 1.8% before both pared losses. Volumes were thin amid holidays in China, South Korea and Sydney.

UK’s political turmoil has added to headwinds for Europe investors already grappling with the fallout of Russia’s war in Ukraine as well as global concerns tied to inflation and higher rates. The pound touched a record low against the dollar last week, while British and European stocks have tanked.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss over the weekend said her government is sticking to a plan to remove the highest income tax rate despite the market upheaval it has spawned. Meanwhile, Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom PJSC suspended natural gas deliveries to Italy, escalating the energy crisis in Europe.

“In the UK, the fiscal plan looks really inflationary, at least the market reads it that way, and there’s a sense that the Bank of England will clamp down,” said Ilya Spivak, head of greater Asia at DailyFX. “So it looks like a bunch more tightening has entered the equation.”

Asian Markets: Stocks Struggle, Oil Price Jump Saps Sentiment

Stocks in Asia struggled to gain traction and US equity futures fluctuated as negative sentiment persisted in markets amid fear that global central banks will keep hiking rates until inflation is tamed, raising the risk of a recession.

Equities made small gains in Japan and dropped in Hong Kong and Australia. Trading in Asia may be muted by a holiday in Sydney and South Korea on Monday and the week-long closure of Chinese markets for Golden Week.

Oil surged to trade near $82 a barrel on indications the OPEC+ alliance is considering slashing production by more than 1 million barrels a day to revive plunging prices when it meets this week. Commodity currencies gained. Those moves increase the risk of more inflation that may prompt central banks to take further aggressive policy action.

Shorter Treasury yields fell more than longer ones in a so-called bull-steepening, with the yield on two-year note at around 4.2% and the 10-year at about 3.8%. The dollar fell slightly.
