Bernie Sanders just disqualified himself as Commander in Chief

Sandtown, the Baltimore neighborhood rocked by riots after the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody earlier this year. But perhaps the most newsworthy comments came from Sanders and his press secretary, Symone Sanders (no relation), after the tour was complete.

After a closed-door meeting with a coalition of local pastors, Sanders was set to hold a press conference with the ministers. Shortly before the start of the presser, Symone Sanders urged news outlets gathered to keep their questions focused. "But again, questions about the meeting, questions about Baltimore, why he came," Sanders said, as live mics rolled. "If you want to ask about Chicago, we have a statement on Chicago that we put out a couple days ago. So you can definitely ask about Chicago. Don't ask about ISIS today. I mean, it's not on topic. If it comes up, and he wants to talk about it, the senator will let you know. But I'd appreciate it if y'all would stay on topic today."

At the end of the press conference, CNN's Dan Merica said to Sanders, "Your press secretary came in here and said not to ask about ISIS. Is there a reason that you do not want to talk about ISIS?"

Sanders responded with an irritated laugh: "Ha ha. All right, what about ISIS guys?" he asked, posing the question to the ministers. "How often are these people talking about the issues that we talked about today?" he continued, as the pastors nodded and said "yes" in agreement.

"Of course I'll talk about ISIS. But today what we're talking about is a community in which half of the people don't have jobs. We're talking about a community in which there are hundreds of buildings that are uninhabitable," he said. "We're talking about a community where kids are unable to go to schools that are decent. You wanna ask me about ISIS, we'll talk about ISIS. But what I said, and let me repeat — and you can agree with me or not — what I have said is that obviously ISIS and terrorism are a huge national issue that we've got to address. But so is poverty ... so is unemployment, so is education, so is health care. So is the need to protect working families.

"And I will, I will continue to talk about those issues. Thank you very much."

With that, Sanders left the podium.

Once again, the President is the only adult in the room.

He called on common sense gun safety laws, no rush to ground war and called upon the American-Muslim community to take a more active role in snuffing out extremism inside the United States.

Hillary Clinton Accuses Jerry Falwell Jr. Of Aiding ISIS

When Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. declared Friday that if more Americans could carry concealed guns "we could end those Muslims," he was aiding terrorism, Hillary Clinton alleged Sunday morning.

Falwell, the son of the late religious right leader Jerry Falwell Sr., made the remark at Liberty University's weekly convocation while discussing the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, the deadliest attack in the U.S. in three years which left 14 dead.

"I’ve always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in and killed them," he said.

Though Falwell later sought to clarify his comment to various news outlets by stating that he meant to refer to terrorists, rather than all Muslims, Clinton jumped on his original statement to accuse him of helping terrorists such as the so-called Islamic State (also known as ISIS, ISIL and Dash).

"This is the kind of deplorable, not only hateful, response to a legitimate security issue but it is giving aid and comfort to ISIS and other radical jihadists," the former secretary of state and current Democratic presidential front-runner said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

Liberty University Wants Students to Carry Weapons

5 p.m. Saturday update: While Friday’s convocation may have ended, the applause and criticism that came after Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. urged students to get permits to carry concealed weapons has not.

The Washington Post, CNN, NBC, Esquire, Politico and several other news sources from around the country have picked up the story this weekend after Falwell’s remarks starting trending.

In a 2½-minute address before dismissing the students, Falwell urged students to take advantage of the university’s free class for concealed-carry permits as a way to counter attacks similar to the bloodshed in San Bernardino, California, on Wednesday.

“Let’s teach them a lesson if they ever show up here,” Falwell told the students.

Mike Colter's Luke Cage: A Plain Clothes Hero

One of the things Marvel fans found out about when they drank up the latest Netflix series milk shake Jessica Jones was the undeniable presence of Mike Colter’s Luke Cage. He’s bald, tough, and looks like a man carved out from the inside of a rock. He also owns an impenetrable skin. The kind of skin that makes him show off his six-pack by running a circular saw over it a few times while literally smoldering Krysten Ritter’s Jones into the bedroom.

Cage is a plain clothes kind of guy and that’s why he’s so appealing to fans. He can simply stop by Gap and pick up a few thermals and a pair of jeans before the next group of tough guys try to get in his way. You show me a crime fighter who throws a t-shirt and jeans on to smash things, and I am all for it. That’s what I wear every day. Cage and I are simple-minded men when it comes to clothing and we are both bald. That is where the similarities end though.

It’s not the first time Colter has played a large man with power. If you are a fan of The Good Wife on CBS, Colter is Lemond Bishop, the criminal that Julianna Marguiles’ Alicia Florick is associated with. Before that, Colter had parts in 15 different television shows or movies. He also had bit parts in high-profile films like Million Dollar Baby, Salt, Men in Black 3, and Zero Dark Thirty. His first part was in an episode of ER back in 2002. While it’s hard to forget a large figure like Colter, he has been hiding in the shadows as another one of Hollywood’s “that guy” actors. You know, the actor you see and immediately recognize yet can’t place a name on his shoulders. It happens every night on TV or inside a movie theater.

Before Jeremy Piven was Ari Gold, he was that guy who always played John Cusack’s friend. Before James Gandolfini played Tony Soprano, he was the mob henchman. Before Frank Grillo became Alvey Kulina on Kingdom and took part in a purge, he was a face. Before Jon Hamm played Don Draper, he was an English professor at Webster University in St. Louis. Large scale or small time, faces drift around the world of make-believe. With Luke Cage, Colter is going from “that one guy” to a face and name that will have more cups of coffee together in fans minds.

Suspect’s family lawyer: I myself probably have 4,000 or 5,000 rounds of bullets at home

"One of the main things I want to make sure happens is that not only is anyone [not] discriminated against as a result of this incident but that we continue to protect our freedom of religion and also our Second Amendment rights to bear arms,” Farook family attorney David Chesley told reporters.

“We can't have this announcement by the president every time there's an incident like this that we need to ban all guns,” Chesley continued. “Those rights are important to us as Americans. We died for those rights and they shouldn't be denied.”

President Obama reiterated a call for stricter limits on guns in the wake of the shooting earlier this week, as details were still coming together and before the FBI formally announced on Friday that it was investigating the shooting as an act of terrorism. Authorities have said all four recovered weapons had been purchased legally.

Chesley indicated he was a gun-owner himself and encouraged those tracking the story to not read too much into the fact that investigators had recovered thousands of rounds of ammunition from the suspects' home, noting owners may buy in bulk. (Investigators also recovered pipe-bomb-type devices and other bomb-making tools.)

“I myself probably have 4,000 or 5,000 rounds of bullets that I keep at home. And the reason why you buy them in bulk is because they're cheaper that way, and the government keeps on outlawing different types of bullets and different types of guns at different times, and then there will be shortages of bullets that will occur,” Chesley said.

Sometimes an act of religious extremism is an act of religious extremism.

When a white kid shot up a black church, right wingers on sites like the Free Republican shout "Disturbed loner" and adequately deny that racism in America had nothing to do with it. On the other side, when the news came out that the shooters had Arabic names, people here on DU shouted "Disturbed loner" and tried to steer everyone away from the notion that religious extremism was their motive.

Sometimes a crime of racial hated is a crime of racial hatred. And sometimes an act of religious extremism is an act of religious extremism. We have to accept facts as they present themselves or we become no better than the freepers.

Missouri Dem Proposes Placing Same Restrictions On Guns As Abortions

Missouri state Rep. Stacey Newman (D) pre-filed a bill Tuesday that would restrict access to firearms in the same way her state restricts access to abortion.

Newman's bill includes a 72-hour waiting period for purchasing guns and watching a 30-minute video on firearms fatalities before purchasing. It also requires the firearms dealer be at least 120 miles from the purchaser's residence.

The bill would require that a gun purchaser visit an emergency room at the nearest "urban hospital" on a weekend between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. "when gun violence victims are present."

Within 72 hours of their purchase, the individual also must meet with at least two families who have been victims of firearm violence and two faith leaders who have presided over funerals in the last year of a child gun violence victim.

The bill was pre-filed for the 2016 session, which begins in January, and is unlikely to get traction. Here's the full text.

Newman tried a similar approach in 2012 when she unsuccessfully proposed a bill to limit vasectomies unless the procedure "would protect him from serious injury or prevent his death," according to the River Front Times.

NRA and Terrorists Sitting in a Tree: San Bernardino Gunman's Family Lawyer is a Sandy Hook Truther

A lawyer for the family of suspected San Bernardino gunman Syed Rizwan Farook floated skepticism about the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in his efforts to cast doubt on early police findings about the massacre at a county holiday party that left 14 dead this week.

Appearing alongside attorney Mohammad Abuershaid, David Chesley said there were “a lot of questions” in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut shooting, where 20 children and 6 adults were killed. Abuershaid and Chesley have been identified as attorneys representing the Farook family.

“There was a lot of questions drawn with regards to Sandy Hook and whether or not that was a real incident or not. We just don't know,” Chesley said, in video published Friday by British tabloid The Daily Mail.

The Mail reported that Chesley, asked directly if he questioned the attack at Sandy Hook, said: “There has been a lot [sic] speculation about it is all I would say.”

Regarding the weapons cache police said was recovered after the shooting, which included more than 1,400 rounds of ammunition and 12 pipe bombs, Chesley said: “Obviously, these things were found there, how they got there we don’t know.”

In the video, the attorney also suggested there is “a lot of motivation at this time to emphasize or create incidents that will cause gun control or prejudice or hatred toward the Muslim community.”

Ryan Coogler In Negotiations To Direct 'Black Panther' For Marvel Studios

Earlier this year we reported that Fruitvale Station and Creed director Ryan Coogler was being pursued by Marvel Studios to direct the upcoming Black Panther film. We later heard from sources that the talks had cooled down. It seems that the success of Creed has sparked up things up again as BMD's Devin Faraci is now reporting that sources have confirmed to him that the director is back in negotiations to direct the 2018 release for Marvel Studios. The film, which will star Chadwick Boseman and be written by Joe Robert Cole, is currently set to hit theaters on February 16, 2018. Let us know your thoughts on the possibility of Coogler directing in the commments section below.

UPDATE: It has now been confirmed by TheWrap, Variety & The Hollywood Reporter that Coogler is indeed in negotiations with Marvel to direct the film for the studio.
