Trump push to deport Vietnam War refugees scalds California GOP

Anti-Trump sentiment helped Democrats topple every Republican House member in Orange County last month in the storied California conservative stronghold.

Now, a Trump administration push to deport Vietnamese nationals is compounding the party’s problems, possibly cementing the loss of a coastal county that had long been the epicenter of Republican power in California.

As state Republicans try to chart a path out of electoral oblivion, several of them expressed incredulity that Donald Trump would follow the election thrashing by antagonizing one of the few minority groups that has consistently voted for GOP candidates.

“Trump shovels more dirt on California Republicans’ grave...” Republican Assemblyman and former leader Chad Mayes tweeted in response to reports that the administration would revive its efforts to deport Vietnamese people who arrived in America before 1995.

A substantial number of those Vietnamese people, many of them war refugees, settled in Orange County, and a shared aversion to communism forged an enduring bond with the Republican Party — much as it did with Cuban refugees from the Castro regime.

While there are signs that younger Vietnamese-Americans have veered sharply to the left of their elders, there are still more registered Republicans than Democrats among Orange County’s roughly 100,000 voters of Vietnamese descent, according to Political Data Inc., a voter data firm used by both Republicans and Democrats in California.

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen blames 7-year old girl for her own death.

The Homeland Security Department on Friday posted a timeline of the girl’s detention and death on Facebook. The girl’s father advised Border Patrol officials that she had become sick and was vomiting before officials put the family on a bus from an outpost near the border to a Border Patrol Station in Lordsburg, New Mexico, according to DHS. The trip took roughly 90 minutes, the department said.

Upon arrival, “the father notified agents that the child was not breathing,” DHS said.

The girl was then transported by helicopter to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. DHS said initial indications showed she died from septic shock.

The DHS inspector general’s office will conduct an investigation into the incident, the watchdog announced Friday afternoon. The results will be shared with the department, Congress and the public, the office said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said earlier Friday the “heart-wrenching” death “is a very sad example of the dangers” migrants face when they try to enter the U.S.

“My heart goes out to the family, all of DHS,” Nielsen said in an interview on Fox News' “Fox & Friends,” where she also touted new border-crossing statistics.

Nielsen on Friday painted the incident as a cautionary tale that could have been avoided had the girl and her father entered into the U.S. legally.

“This family chose to cross illegally,” she said. “They were about 90 miles away from where we could process them. It took a such a large crowd, it took our Border Patrol folks a couple times to get them all.”

While Nielsen said Border Patrol gave the family “immediate care,” she said that DHS would look into the incident.

A bill pushed by Ryan, whose family fled famine-ravaged Ireland in 1851, could provide Irish nationals with thousands of additional U.S. work visas each year.

The legislation cleared the House Nov. 28 on an uncontested voice vote and is increasingly likely to clear the Senate next week, a GOP aide told POLITICO.

But the measure has stirred opposition from the alt-right publication Breitbart, which dubbed the visa program “amnesty for Irish lobbies“ and said it would take jobs away from U.S. college graduates.

The bill would give the Irish access to unused E-3 visas, which currently are available only to Australians in "specialty occupations" that require a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent. In return, Ireland would offer additional work visas to Americans, among other concessions.

“The idea here is that this is going to be reciprocal,” said John Deasy, an Irish special envoy to the U.S. “We think it’s important that the flows in the workplace continue between the two countries.”

Secret Court Papers Hint Maria Butina May Testify in Another Trial

Confessed Russian spy Maria Butina may be gearing up to testify in another trial, according to sealed court papers briefly made public on Friday.

Federal prosecutors in Washington, DC filed a motion to file under seal, prosecutors asked to file an authorization for transportation in secrecy so that Butina could testify in an unspecified “pending criminal investigation." The Washington Post’s Spencer Hsu first discovered and published a portion of the document on Twitter.

Butina’s attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Beast.

Butina pleaded guilty this week to acting as a foreign agent for Russia and attempting to use her access to conservative groups to build a secret backchannel between the Kremlin and the Trump administration. As part of her plea deal, Butina agreed to cooperate “in any and all to matters as to which the Government deems this cooperation relevant.”
