PA-18 Special Election Is Now a Toss Up

Cook Political Report: “It’s not normal for Republicans to be worried about losing a seat President Trump carried by 20 points. But with two weeks to go before the March 13 special election, Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone is locked in an extremely close contest against Democratic prosecutor/Marine veteran Conor Lamb, who has significantly outspent him.”

“We’re moving the race from Lean Republican to Toss Up.”

“What’s made the race so close, many Republicans admit, is that Lamb has simply proven to be a stronger candidate than Saccone.”

MS-SEN: Race may be attracting a top tier Democrat.

As Chris McDaniel, the state’s anti-Republican establishment standard bearer, approaches a formal decision to challenge U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker in the June Republican primary, Democrat David Baria confirmed Monday that he is still strongly considering a run as well.

Baria, a state representative from Bay St. Louis, told Mississippi Today that he would give “serious thought” to running for the seat should McDaniel challenge Wicker in the Republican primary.

McDaniel teased supporters with a social media request to visit his Facebook page Monday evening for news about his decision. Numerous media reports said the formal kickoff of McDaniel’s bid is expected at political rally in his hometown of Ellisville on Wednesday.

“We’re looking for a fight. I can’t wait to have you on my team again,” McDaniel said during the livestream on Facebook. “I’m going to be holding an event, and I think you can probably read between the lines as to why. My family and I want you to be part of this – an announcement we believe will hopefully change the way we see ourselves and the role of government.”

Baria noted that he must make a decision this week as well.

“I think it takes a somewhat unique dynamic to see a path of victory for a Democrat in a U.S. Senate race in Mississippi,” Baria said on Monday afternoon. “In a vacuum, Chris McDaniel getting in against Wicker creates the kind of dynamic that leads me to believe that might be achievable.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate releases love letter to NRA

NOTE: This is a Red-to-Blue opportunity. The election for the open Wisconsin State Supreme Court seat (occupied by a Republican) is April 3. To learn how you can help Democrat Rebecca Dallet, go to https://www.dalletforjustice.com .

MADISON — Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Michael Screnock on Monday released the email he sent to the National Rifle Association that resulted in winning the group’s endorsement, which was announced the day before the Florida high school shooting that left 17 dead earlier this month.

His opponent, Rebecca Dallet, is making the NRA’s support of Screnock a key part of her campaign against him for a 10-year seat on Wisconsin’s highest court, labeling him an “extreme activist.”

She and other Democrats had been calling on Screnock to release the email to the NRA. His campaign made it public after The Associated Press asked for it.

Dallet, a Milwaukee County circuit judge, faces Screnock, a Sauk County circuit judge, in the April 3 election. Dallet, backed by Democrats, and Screnock, the favorite of conservatives, advanced in last week’s primary election.

In the email to the NRA, Screnock identified himself as a “proud gun owner” and said the job of judges is to be an arbiter of the law, “not policy analysts or political activists. This of course includes the Second Amendment.”

“I know firsthand the importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting public safety, and respecting the Constitution and the separation of powers,” he wrote. “I also know about the dangers of legislating from the bench.”

The NRA’s political action committee announced its endorsement of Screnock on Feb. 13, the day before the shooting in Parkland, Florida. The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund tweeted its support of Screnock on Feb. 14.

That was the last tweet the group made before authorities say a former student armed with an AR-15 assault-style rifle gunned down 14 students and three faculty members at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The NRA-PVF has not tweeted since the attack, leaving the Screnock endorsement at the top of its feed.

“The NRA-PVF is proud to endorse @JudgeScrenock for the #Wisconsin Supreme Court,” the group tweeted. In a press release, the NRA said Screnock was the only candidate for Supreme Court who returned a “position statement indicating his support for constitutional rights.”

Run for Something ad highlights unopposed Florida lawmakers with NRA ties

A group supporting a wave of first-time candidates for elected office took out a full-page ad in the Sunday edition of the Sun-Sentinel calling on Floridians to run against NRA-backed state lawmakers in 2018.

The Run for Something ad states “The NRA is killing our kids” at the top and then includes an sheet with the names and NRA letter grades of the lawmakers who are so far unopposed in their re-election campaigns.

On the list are Republican Reps. Bryan Avila, Halsey Beshears, Cord Byrd, Travis Cummings, Brad Drake, Dane Eagle, Jason Fischer, Heather Fitzenhagen, Julio Gonzalez, Michael Grant, Stanley McClain, Jose Oliva, Mel Ponder, Jake Raburn, Holly Raschein, Ray Rodrigues, Rick Roth, Chris Sprowls, Cyndi Stevenson and Jayer Williamson.

Also included are Republican Sens. Aaron Bean, Jeff Brandes and Kathleen Passidomo.

“These 24 state legislators are running unopposed this November – and they’re complicit in the gun violence in our community,” the ad reads. “Hold them accountable. Run against them. We will help you.”

Run for Something is a political committee founded by former Hillary Clinton campaign staffer Amanda Litman. The group funds and supports mainly young, progressive candidates for elected offices.

AZ-08: GOP Worries Sexting Scandal Could Cost a House Seat

AZ-08: GOP Worries Sexting Scandal Could Cost a House Seat

“Republicans are fretting that a front-runner for an Arizona congressional seat — a married minister involved in a sexting scandal — will pull a Roy Moore and hand the seat to Democrats if he wins Tuesday’s special-election primary,” Politico reports.

“The seat vacated by former GOP Rep. Trent Franks — who resigned last December over his own sex scandal — should be an easy hold for Republicans.”

“But a bombshell report of nude photos and text messages exchanged between the candidate, former state Sen. Steve Montenegro, and a legislative staffer — published just a week before the election — has left GOP operatives worried that ‘it could be Alabama all over again,’ said Shiree Verdone, who ran Arizona Sen. John McCain’s 2010 Senate race.”

Utah GOP Passes Rule Would Could Expel Romney

UtahPolicy.com: “You may have thought the internal workings of the Utah Republican Party were really screwed up before.”

“But now get this: If former U.S. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney continues gathering signatures as part of his U.S. Senate run this year, he may well be kicked out of the Utah Republican Party via a bylaw change adopted Saturday over the objections of party chairman Rob Anderson.”

“Romney has already announced that he’s taking the signature route, as well as attending the April convention.”
