Poll: Biden leads Trump by 10 points as economic pessimism grows

Former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Trump by 10 points nationally in a new poll, bolstered by an advantage with independents.

The poll also shows pessimism about the economy growing, a factor that could help Biden and hurt Trump in the poll.

The latest Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll finds Biden getting 55 percent support, versus 45 percent for Trump. Biden has 96 percent support from Democrats, while Trump has 89 percent support from Republicans. Independents break for Biden by a 54 to 46 percent margin.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who has yet to drop out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, also leads Trump, winning 53 percent to Trump’s 47 percent. However, Biden has a near-insurmountable lead in delegates over Sanders. Biden leads Sanders among Democrats nationally by 36 points, 58 to 31 percent.

NY-12: Maloney primary challenger tests positive for coronavirus

Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s (D-N.Y.) primary challenger Suraj Patel revealed on Monday that he has tested positive for the coronavirus after experiencing symptoms roughly 10 days ago.

Patel said in a Medium post that he and his two roommates, who are both doctors, were all required to test for the virus in order for the roommates to receive clearance to work.

All three tested positive for the coronavirus and self-isolated for a period of time.

"We experienced the symptoms of a COVID infection including 101–102-degree fevers, shortness of breath, and body aches for several days," Patel wrote on Medium. "I personally, am happy to say that I am now fully recovered and have been asymptomatic for more days than hospital guidelines require to go back to work."

Pentagon orders military bases to stop releasing specific COVID-19 numbers

he Pentagon has ordered military bases and combatant commands to withhold coronavirus case numbers, citing operational security concerns.

"As we continue to grapple with the novel nature of COVID19, we are constantly assessing and adapting not only how we respond to combatting the virus, but also how we share critical public health information with our communities," Pentagon spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said in a statement on Monday.

"We will not report the aggregate number of individual service member cases at individual unit, base or Combatant Commands. We will continue to do our best to balance transparency in this crisis with operational security."

Trump: "I haven't heard anything about testing being a problem"

Several rural-state governors alerted President Trump on Monday that they are struggling to obtain urgently needed medical supplies and testing equipment, warning that despite the worsening coronavirus situation in New York and other urban areas, more sparsely populated parts of the country need help, too.

In response to requests for more testing kits, Mr. Trump said, "I haven't heard about testing in weeks," according to an audio recording of the call between the president and governors obtained by CBS News.

During the call, which lasted a little over an hour, Democratic and Republican governors detailed how they are struggling to obtain the protective equipment doctors and nurses will need to treat the sick and the test kits needed to determine whether sick residents are suffering from COVID-19.

"We understand the challenges in New York. I have family in New York," Wyoming Republican Governor Mark Gordon told the president. But, he told Mr. Trump, "I think a little bit of supply going our way could get us better prepared going forward."

"Good point," Mr. Trump replied. "Thank you very much, Mark. If you have a problem, call me. I'll get you what you need."

CBS News obtained a recording of the call from a participant shortly after it concluded. Others familiar with the call confirmed some of the details.

Wisconsin officials are moving full-speed-ahead with holding the April 7 presidential primary

Wisconsin officials are moving forward with holding the planned April 7 presidential primary election as reported cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, continue to mount in the state.

As of Monday morning, the Wisconsin Department of Health reported 1,157 confirmed cases and 19 deaths from COVID-19, a massive increase over the 32 cases that were reported in the state two weeks ago on March 15.

Nine other states set to hold primary elections in the rest of March and April, including Georgia, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and the six mid-Atlantic states which planned to vote on the April 28 "Acela primary" day have now moved to postpone their elections until May or June.

But Wisconsin, which allocates 84 pledged delegates in the Democratic presidential primary and is holding numerous other down-ballot elections, is proceeding with its April 7 election, even as Gov. Tony Evers issued a "Safer at Home" order banning gatherings of more than 10 people through April 24.

2 Top Democratic Groups Form Alliance to Support Joe Biden

Two of the most prominent outside Democratic groups are forming a partnership to pool resources and research to help elect former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. this fall, an attempt at consolidating fund-raising in an increasingly competitive marketplace for third-party organizations.

Unite the Country, the super PAC formed late last year to support Mr. Biden, and the progressive group American Bridge are teaming up to coordinate their efforts in hopes of raising about $175 million together to defeat President Trump in November, leaders from the two groups said Monday.

“It made more sense to raise money together than raise money competing against one another,” said Steve Schale, who helps run Unite the Country.

The partnership will be co-chaired by Deval Patrick, the former Massachusetts governor and a late entrant into this year’s presidential race, and former Gov. Jennifer Granholm of Michigan.
