GOP congressman Dan Crenshaw told 9/11 firefighter he was 'too busy' to help survivors
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) reportedly told a New York City firefighter who survived the 9/11 attacks that he was too busy to listen to concerns about helping victims of the worst terrorist attack in American history.
"He really didn't want to talk to us," Rob Serra, told the NY Daily News about his encounter with the recently elected Republican. The firefighter told the paper Crenshaw said he was "too busy" to speak.
When Serra approached Crenshaw about renewing the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund during a visit to Capitol Hill in March, "He said he didn't have any information and that his staff would take care of it."
Despite his callous stance, Crenshaw recently tried to use 9/11 as a political weapon.
Echoing right-wing media outlets like Fox News, Crenshaw falsely alleged that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) had insulted the memory of 9/11. Omar was pointing out that Muslims had unfairly come under fire after the attack, thanks to religious bigotry. But conservatives twisted her words as they repeatedly have.

Sweden considers revivng Assange rape charges at request of victim.
The Wikileaks founder, who is now in UK custody, was arrested on Thursday after years in Ecuador's London embassy.
Sweden is considering whether to reopen an investigation into rape and sexual assault allegations against him.
And the US is seeking his extradition in relation to one of the largest ever leaks of government secrets, in 2010.
The whistle-blowing website Wikileaks has published thousands of classified documents covering everything from the film industry to national security and war.
Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied.
At the time, the Australian-born 47-year-old said he had had entirely consensual sex with two women while on a trip to Stockholm, and that the Swedish claims against him were part of a smear campaign.
Swedish prosecutors dropped a rape investigation into Assange in 2017 because they were unable to formally notify him of allegations while he stayed in the embassy.
Two other charges of molestation and unlawful coercion had to be dropped in 2015 because time had run out.
But Swedish prosecutors say they are now re-examining Assange's case at the request of the lawyer acting for the alleged rape victim.

CA-15: Hayward council member Aisha Wahab runs for Eric Swalwell's open congressional seat
Hayward council member Aisha Wahab, a progressive elected just a few months ago, became the first candidate to jump into the race for Rep. Eric Swalwells East Bay congressional seat Friday.
Wahab, 31, became one of the first Afghan-American elected officials in the country when she won her council seat last year. She said she planned to focus her congressional campaign on protecting the middle class and fighting for progressive issues like Medicare for All and living wages.
I am a product of America, from foster care to public education to community organizing, Wahab said in an interview, vowing to push the boundaries of the discussion in Congress.
Swalwells announcement this week that hes running for president could set off a crowded race to represent the district, which includes the Tri-Valley area as well as Hayward, parts of Fremont and several surrounding communities.

Report: Julian Assange was a filthy, obnoxious pig.
More details emerged later, when Foreign Minister José Valencia told Congress that Assange had been using a mobile phone not registered with the embassy, repeatedly insulted the mission's workers - reportedly calling them US spies - and damaged the facilities by riding his skateboard and playing football, despite being told not to do so.
Cleaning staff, Mr Valencia said, had described "improper hygienic conduct" throughout Assange's stay, an issue that a lawyer had attributed to "stomach problems". One unnamed senior Ecuadorean official told AP news agency that other issues included "weeks without a shower" and a "dental problem born of poor hygiene".
Interior Minister María Paula Romo then complained that Assange had been allowed to do things like "put faeces on the walls of the embassy and other behaviours of that nature".
But Vaughan Smith, a friend who visited Assange last week, told Reuters that he rejected this claim. "Julian has been under stress but seemed in a balanced frame of mind every time I have seen him. It doesn't seem in character," Mr Smith said.
Mr Valencia added that the decision was taken to prevent a further deterioration of Assange's health, without giving details. Quoting an unnamed friend, the New York Times said Assange had become deeply depressed and that diplomats - many of them recently appointed by the Moreno administration - were tired of his behaviour.

Just learned Trump DOJ has now abandoned its defense of the statute criminalizing, of all things, female genital mutilation. This is what happens when you torch your institutional responsibilities to defend statutes, and gut the traditional standard DOJ has applied in past admin
