Elizabeth Warren to Hold Big-Dollar Fund-Raiser for Joe Biden

While she did not hold private fund-raising events for her own campaign, Ms. Warren did appear at multiple such events for the Democratic National Committee. She also, before launching her presidential campaign, contributed funds she’d raised from high-dollar donors to state Democratic parties.

Mr. Biden’s other rivals have aided his fund-raising since he became the party’s presumptive nominee. Former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., raised $1 million in a “grass roots” online fund-raiser on Friday. Mr. Buttigieg is scheduled to appear at more fund-raising events with Mr. Biden next week, as is Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. Senator Kamala Harris of California, businessman Andrew Yang and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, all former rivals, are set to appear at Biden fund-raising events in June.

Mr. Sanders sent a fund-raising appeal for Mr. Biden to his donor list, but declined to share his list with the Biden campaign.

FLIPPABLE: Steve Olsen for UT-HD09

We have plenty of lawyers and real estate salesmen in the Legislature. I'm different. As a lifetime engineer, statistics practitioner and trained consultant in team-based problem solving, I have the experience and skills to bring people together and use facts and data (rather than rigid political ideology) to solve problems.

I'm a native Utahn from pioneer stock and believe passionately in the values taught to me by parents and religious leaders as a child. I live by the creed of our West Point Cadets and Naval Academy Midshipmen: I do not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do.

I have observed in my church calling helping people in inner city Ogden that many hard working families are struggling to meet basic needs due to lack of basic heath care, opportunity and support systems. I will fight for everyone to have the opportunity to achieve self reliance and realize their dreams.

FLIPPABLE: Oscar Mata for Utah-HD08

I’m running for the Utah House of Representatives to give a voice to the people of House District 8. My life has instilled a work ethic that has given me great fortunes and a commitment to build coalitions and serve my community. I am ready to expand this service to the Utah House of Representatives.

I was born and raised in Utah with my brother, Brayden. My father (a Republican) immigrated to this country from Honduras when he was in his early 20’s. He has worked in retail and manufacturing. My mother (a Democrat) was a single parent who received her bachelor’s degree at the age of 30 and opened the first substance abuse treatment center in Utah County in the late 1990’s. She grew her small business that started out with a $1,000 loan to having 8 locations statewide.

My parents instilled the idea in both my brother and I that hard work and being a man of your word is more than words, it is something one must act on daily. One of my first jobs was working at my mom’s company during the school year and working at Lagoon Amusement Park during the summer. I worked 4 jobs my junior and senior year until I graduated from DaVinci Academy.
hortly after graduating high school I opened my first business, a substance abuse treatment center. It has been an absolute joy to work with those who are wanting to better themselves and fight a nasty addiction that has ruined too many Utah families. Through building relationships with clients, attorneys, and the courts we have grown our company to be the only substance abuse company that offers services statewide.
My parents are both active in their community and had the same expectations for my brother and I. I started volunteering for local Democratic candidates once I was 13. However, with age and experience, I started getting to know Republicans who I was able to work with very well, and Democrats who seemed to be just as partisan and unwilling to get things done as some of the Republicans I had grown to be tired of. After a lot of soul searching I decided to open up a political and marketing consulting firm that focused on helping good candidates, regardless of party politics. We have helped elect over a dozen Republicans and over a dozen Democrats to elected office.

In 2017 I founded and eventually co-chaired the group Weber County Forward with the late Mayor/Major Brent Taylor. Brent and I both thought it was time to study our form of county government and make sure that the citizens of Weber County were well represented. We knew this was not going to be an easy task and we would have to bring both parties together. Brent and I working together were able to build the largest coalition of republicans and democrats (including most elected officials) to find common ground on this idea. This also included at one point all 13 mayors in Weber County. I later Co-Chaired this group with former County Commissioner Jan Zogmaister. I saw first hand that members of differing parties could come together and what we could get accomplished. When working toward the same goal, we were able to overcome special interest and corruption to get the initiative on the ballot.

This past year I was asked by DaVinci Academy to create and oversee a new project they wanted to start, partnering up with the Ogden-Weber Tech College. By working with the President and Vice Presidents of OTECH we have launched a new program to help students receive a trade certificate by the time they graduate from DaVinci Academy. I have really enjoyed coordinating this partnership and see this program that started out as an idea become a reality. Most of all I love working with the students and helping them succeed in their education and career goals.

I have been shaped and my successes have come from the support I have had from my community. I have had the privilege of being able to repay the favor by taking on leadership roles in my community, my church, and my county.

-Service Coordinator, Willowbrook Ward
-Commissioner, Ogden City Diversity Commission
-Asst. Soccer Coach, DaVinci Academy of Science & Arts
-Treasurer, Weber County Hispanic Caucus

FLIPPABLE: Wendy Davis for UT-HD45

As a little girl, Wendy witnessed the struggles of income inequality and the rising cost of living as she and her sister were raised by a single mother who strained just to put dinner on the table. Wendy credits dedicated and caring teachers who helped her navigate adolescence and dream beyond her small-town childhood home. Her public school teachers fostered her interest in government and history and inspired her enduring commitment to ensuring everyone has a chance to move beyond their current situation. The first in her family to attend college, Wendy attended Bradley University.

The daughter of a Vietnam War Vet and a union steward, Wendy originally hails from the Midwest, and she has proudly called Utah her home for over 25 years. Her parents divorced when she was young, and Wendy and her sister were raised by a single mom who often struggled to provide for basic necessities. This early life experience shaped many of Wendy’s ideas and values. When she was in her early 20s, Wendy joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The family-focus of the church appealed to her, and she knew that she wanted her future family to be grounded in faith and centered on strong family values. As soon as she graduated from college, she went on a mission.

Wendy had life-altering experiences when she served in Croatia and Serbia during the Balkan War in the early 1990s. She lived through the transition of nations emerging from communism and experienced first-hand the political and economic impacts of war. When Wendy moved to Utah, she helped Bosnian families transition to their new homes in Salt Lake City, and she worked as a translator in the local courts. Because she knows challenging it can be to navigate our medical system, Wendy provided pro bono interpretation services for families at Primary Children’s Hospital.

In August 2003, Wendy married her husband Dean and became the stepmom to four young children. When they moved to Sandy, Wendy became involved with the local schools and served on the PTA of Mount Jordan Middle School (MJMS). Concerned about student involvement, she and other PTA volunteers created an after-school student organization that focused on activities and service opportunities for the middle school students. For more than ten years, she served in various positions within PTA organizations and two years as the MJMS School Community Council Chair. These experiences reaffirmed her believe that it is important to be involved in her local community and advocate for those who are underrepresented.

Always up for a good challenge, Wendy decided to pursue a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Utah. When she began her program, all of her kids were in school and living at home. When she finished the program, all of her kids were out of the house, and she had six grandchildren! For her dissertation research, Wendy followed the journey of a policy initiative that provided a way to fund preschool in the state of Utah. Her dissertation is titled: The Politics of Policy Change: How Utah Funded Prekindergarten through Pay for Success. She became Dr. Wendy Davis in 2019.

Wendy and Dean live in Sandy in the same house where they raised their four kids. They are proud grandparents to seven amazing grandchildren. They love college football (Go Utes), and during baseball season, they root for the San Francisco Giants. They also enjoy traveling—especially if it is to see one of the grandkids. Wendy is now ready for her next challenge, moving Utah forward and standing up for the wonderful citizens of House District 45.

FLIPPABLE: Diane Lewis for UT-HD43

My name is Diane Lewis and I’m running to be your Representative in the Utah House of Representatives.

I was born in Rockford, Illinois, the third of four sisters. After graduating from high school in Inglewood, California I co-owned several businesses. I was married to a Farrier (horse-shoer). We owned horses and I did competitive barrel racing. I also co-owned a pool and hot-tub store where I did the bookkeeping, payroll, sales, and everything else that goes into owning a small business.

I moved to Utah when my first granddaughter was born, so I could be in her life and be closer to my son. I’ve lived in West Jordan for 16 years and love our mountain views and my neighbors. People in West Jordan look out for one another. They’re the type of people that have your back and know that you have theirs.

After I moved to Utah, I started working as a union representative of working families with LiUNA!, the Laborers’ International Union of North America. I negotiated to assure good wages, secure benefits, and better working conditions. I developed more work opportunities for our members and I was a spokesperson for them at the Capitol. As the Secretary Treasurer of the union, I was responsible for our financial records and reports, and I made sure we spent our money wisely and efficiently. I was a Trustee over our Health and Welfare plan and our Pension Fund, where I made sure our members received the best plans and investment options.

Like you, my life experiences have made me who I am today. I listen with no judgement, to hear concerns and ideas. I am a skillful and experienced negotiator and leader. I understand the importance of listening to all sides so I can consider the whole picture and can make the best decisions for everyone.

I’m running to be your State Representative because I know how hard we work to make a better life for our families. I’ve seen that some legislators don’t understand that reality. We need people on Capitol Hill who are willing to work together for the good of all, not just for special interests and personal gain.

I am a skilled and effective advocate for secure, sustaining jobs and healthy communities. My greatest accomplishment is raising my son to be a caring husband, father, son and an amazing human being. As your Representative I will bring the perseverance, determination, and courage that I’ve developed in my life to keep West Jordan a place where our children can grow into happy and productive people.

My name is Diane Lewis. I’m a Utahn, your neighbor, and with your support, our Representative on Capitol Hill.

-Improving infrastructure and accessibility to the West side
-Improving Utah’s air quality by being good stewards of the land
-Supporting working families

I have had the opportunity to serve my community in several capacities, and look forward to using my experience to make sure that all of Utah’s working class families have a seat at the table.

FLIPPABLE: Cheryl Butler for UT-HD53

Hi, I'm Cheryl Butler and I'm running to represent you in the Utah House of Representatives, District 53. I live in Summit County with my husband Raymond, and our two adorable dogs, Lucy & Barney. I'm retired, after working >30 years as an engineer and senior manager with Chevron. For 20 of those years, I was a working mom. Thankfully, our five kids are all grown now and have flown the nest. Since retirement, I've put my experience to work by serving the community on the Boards of multiple civic organizations.

I'm running for office because I truly believe that we all have a duty to serve the public when we can. In these uncertain times, experience really matters. I'd like to put mine to use for District 53. Join me, and let's bring a new voice to UT State House - YOURS!

Georgia is a swing state in 2020

Indeed, Georgia was more competitive in the 2018 midterms than it had been in any midterm election in a generation. Democrats won 49% of the vote in the governor, attorney general and secretary of state races. US House Democrats combined to win 48% of the statewide vote, which was their highest share in a midterm since 1990.

Georgia's move to the left makes a lot of sense when you look at how the state and the nation's demographic and electoral winds have shifted.

First, black voters have increased their power significantly over the last two decades in Georgia. In November 2000, the Georgia secretary of state reported that black voters made up 25% of all registered voters for whom race and ethnicity was known. Currently, black voters are 33% of all voters for whom race and ethnicity is known. According to the Census Bureau, no state in the nation has seen a larger increase from 2000 to 2018 in the share blacks make up of the citizen voting age population than Georgia. Blacks, of course, are the most Democratic ethnic or racial bloc in the entire electorate.

Second, a lot of the white voters in Georgia have a college degree. This is a group moving to the left nationally. Georgia is in the top half in the nation for the percentage that whites with a college degree make up of both eligible white voters and likely 2020 white voters, according to the Census Bureau and a projection by The New York Times' Nate Cohn using government data. That's unlike every other deep southern state and every state that flipped from Barack Obama in 2012 to Trump in 2016.

Moreover, there's a lot of room for Democrats to grow among college whites in Georgia. In the 2018 governor's race for example, Stacey Abrams lost college educated whites by around 20 points -- but Democrats actually won them in the nationwide House vote.
