Truck kills one, barely misses Wasserman Schultz at Florida Pride event

A pickup truck ran over two people, killing one of them, and narrowly missing a member of Congress during a pride parade in South Florida on Saturday evening, according to WPLG Local 10.

A white pickup truck was lined up with other floats at the Stonewall Pride Parade & Street Festival in Wilton Manors on Saturday evening when the driver reportedly hit the gas pedal and ran over two bystanders, WPLG reported. Wilton Manors is just north of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), who was present at the parade and sitting in a convertible, was almost hit by the vehicle. The Florida lawmaker later confirmed on Twitter that she, her staff and others were safe.

'Champ' Biden has passed away

President Biden and first lady Jill Biden’s German shepherd Champ died this week.

The president and first lady said in a statement Saturday that Champ “passed away peacefully at home.”

“He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family,” the statement said.

“Even as Champ’s strength waned in his last months, when we came into a room, he would immediately pull himself up, his tail always wagging, and nuzzle us for an ear scratch or a belly rub. Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything was instantly better when he was next to us,” it added.

The president and first lady said in the statement that the dog “loved nothing more than curling up at our feet in front of a fire at the end of the day, joining us as a comforting presence in meetings, or sunning himself in the White House garden.”

Americans Quitting Jobs At Highest Rate Since 2000

Wall Street Journal: “More U.S. workers are quitting their jobs than at any time in at least two decades, signaling optimism among many professionals while also adding to the struggle companies face trying to keep up with the economic recovery.

“The wave of resignations marks a sharp turn from the darkest days of the pandemic, when workers craved job security while weathering a national health and economic crisis.”

Delta variant 60% more transmissible, reduces vaccine effect, UK experts say

The rapid surge in cases during Delhi’s fourth Covid-19 wave was mainly driven by the Delta variant, which likely has immune-evasion properties and accounted for 60 per cent of the cases in April, according to a new study.

The Delta variant, B.1.617.2, is 50 per cent more transmissible than the Alpha variant, B1.117, first discovered in the UK, say researchers from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB).
Prior infections, high seropositivity and partial vaccination are “insufficient impediments” to the spread of the Delta variant, found the scientists. They traced the factors contributing to the scale and speed of the fourth wave that started in April in Delhi and compared them to the preceding three waves last year.

“We find that this surge of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Delhi is best explained by the introduction of a new highly transmissible variant of concern (VOC), B.1.617.2, with likely immune-evasion properties," the researchers noted.

The variant may have led to insufficient neutralising immunity in people, despite high seropositivity, and social behaviour may have augmented the surge by promoting transmission, they added.
