Attorney General Greg Abbott launches campaign for governor

San Antonio — Declaring that he both literally and figuratively has a spine of steel, Attorney General Greg Abbott announced his candidacy for governor Sunday.

“When it comes to our freedom and our future I will never, never stop fighting,” said Abbott in prepared remarks being delivered at 2 under a blazing sun at the La Villita Historic Arts Village near the Alamo. “That’s why I am asking you — the people of Texas — to elect me as your next governor.”

Abbott’s announcement came six days after Gov. Rick Perry declared that he would not seek another term in 2014, and on the 29th anniversary of the accident that left Abbott paralyzed below the waist.

As he recounts in his speech: “On a steamy summer day like this, I went out for a jog. While I was jogging a huge oak tree suddenly crashed down on me. The falling tree crushed my spinal cord — piercing my body with pain — leaving me forever paralyzed. I would never walk again.”

Florida is a dangerous place for children and blacks.

It is a simple fact that the State of Florida is not a safe place for a child or a black person. I remember, under the oversight of Jeb Bush, one foster child after another turning up dead and all Jeb! ever had to say was "Another one of God's children was unloved". And of course, Casey Anthony was found not guilty after killing her daughter. Discrimination against blacks in Florida is a centuries-old problem. African Americans were systematically turned away from the polls in 2000 and again in 2012. And last night, a jury decided that a dead, rail-thin 17 year-old unarmed kid was more dangerous than a large adult with a handgun. Florida is just not safe.

Fall Showdown In Court On Mich. Gay Marriage Ban

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – A federal judge says he’ll hear arguments Oct. 1 on the legality of Michigan’s ban on gay marriage and adoption by same-sex couples.

Judge Bernard Friedman set the date Wednesday in what could be a ground-breaking lawsuit filed by two Detroit-area nurses who are lesbians.

Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer— both nurses— and three adopted children live under one roof in Hazel Park.

DeBoer has adopted two children, and Rowse has one — but Michigan law bars the women from jointly adopting each other’s kids. In each case, the biological parents were unable to care for the kids. The women have raised all three since birth.

Virginia Gov's Family Took $145K From CEO

RICHMOND — A prominent political donor gave $70,000 to a corporation owned by Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell and his sister last year, and the governor did not disclose the money as a gift or loan, according to people with knowledge of the payments.

The donor, wealthy businessman Jonnie R. Williams Sr., also gave a previously unknown $50,000 check to the governor’s wife, Maureen, in 2011, the people said.

The money to the corporation and Maureen McDonnell brings to $145,000 the amount Williams gave to assist the McDonnell family in 2011 and 2012 — funds that are now at the center of federal and state investigations.

Williams, the chief executive of dietary supplement manufacturer Star Scientific Inc., also provided a $10,000 check in December as a present to McDonnell’s eldest daughter, Jeanine, intended to help defray costs at her May 2013 wedding, the people said.

My question of the day.

As I walked out of my office to the train, I saw construction workers toiling and sweating their asses off, and I asked myself, "Why does a guy who is building something make less than someone who pushes papre all day?"

The news events around me keep me from getting worked up over Snowden.

I've been living so many news events immediately around me that I am having a hard time getting excited or outraged over the whole Snowden drama. The improving economy helped me get a new job after 2.5 years, but like everyone else I am working harder for less. Same sex marriage is now legal in California and ail soon attend a neighbor's wedding party. The heat wave, probably due to climate change, has made this spring and summer the hottest in San Francisco since I moved out here (and I spend 8 hours in a miserably hot office with no AC in the East bAy). My wife's employers just laid off half the staff (showing the economy still far from fully back) and are working her to death. BART transit operators went on strike and made my commute hell for a week. And finally, hundreds of people were injured in a plane crash, some of which are in the hospital down the street. I'm sorry if I can see more going on in the world besides some guy holed up in an airport in Moscow.
