White nationalism on rise in California as Bay Area girds for rallies next weekend

OAKDALE — As the Central Valley’s flatlands give way to the rolling hills of California horse country, this quiet city that calls itself “the Cowboy Capital of the World” and features weekly rodeos seems but a blip on Highway 120, halfway between San Francisco and Yosemite National Park.

But Oakdale, a city of about 22,000 people in Stanislaus County, is facing a new and frightening renown: A few miles from downtown, Nathan Damigo, one of the most prominent new white nationalist leaders in America, runs a group that helped organize last weekend’s bloody rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

From a five-acre compound on a winding road along the Stanislaus River, Damigo, a 31-year-old former Marine and ex-con, has launched Identity Evropa, which experts say is a growing hate group recruiting young people and college students. He also attends California State University, Stanislaus, in nearby Turlock, where students say he’s agitated on racial issues.

Ultra-blue California may seem to be the last place you’d find right-wing extremist group’s like Damigo’s. But experts say the Golden State is becoming a center of white nationalist activism, with more active hate groups than any other state.

“This is not getting better. It is getting worse,” said Brian Levin, a San Bernardino State University professor who studies extremist groups. “So many people are amped up. They are now emboldened.”

Oakdale residents interviewed this past week said they knew little about Damigo, who attended Liberty Baptist High School in San Jose, but they didn’t express surprise that the white nationalist movement had a presence in Oakdale, where Donald Trump won all five of the city’s precincts in November.

They're breaking windows again.

ALAMEDA (KRON) — The Jewish temple on Alameda’s Bay Farm Island was vandalized this week according to Alameda Police.

A large object was thrown through the windows of Temple Israel, located at 3183 Mecartney Rd., sometime between 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, police said.

No one went into the temple and police did not discover any graffiti.

Police say this will be investigated as a hate crime.

The suspect is only described as someone wearing all black clothing.

Community members are planning to come together Friday at 7 p.m. at the temple to show their support for temple members. A temple representative says all are welcome to join.

Gun-Wielding "Oath Keepers" Hired as Security at San Francisco Right-Wing Rally

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - The fate of the controversial 'Patriot Prayer' rally in San Francisco August 26 remains up in the air as the park permit is still under review.

And now new concerns have arisen since it's come to light that the rifle-toting, camouflage militia-men known as the 'Oath Keepers' have confirmed they will provide security for the event.

Mayor Ed Lee has made it clear that he believes the Golden Gate National Recreation Area should revoke the permit, which is still in its initial phase.

"It's not just [about free] speech and I think those that are [saying that], are missing the point," said Mayor Ed Lee, who admitted that he has huge security concerns over the planned event.

Mueller's investigation focusing on Trump Jr.: report

Federal prosecutors working for the office of special counsel Robert Mueller are focusing their efforts on President Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., according to a Friday report.

They are seeking to determine his intent in taking a meeting with a Kremlin-linked lawyer last year, Buzzfeed reported.

The 16 prosecutors working for the special counsel office are reportedly trying to determine if Trump Jr. obtained any information from his meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, which was also attended by senior White House adviser Jared Kushner and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

The meeting, which occurred just weeks after President Trump clinched the Republican nomination, has become a focal point in the federal investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia in order to defeat Hillary Clinton last year.

I'm glad that girl died during Virginia protest, says NC KKK Leader

he leader of a North Carolina based group associated with the Ku Klux Klan says he is glad that a woman died while taking part in a protest in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend.

Heather Heyer was killed when James Allen Fields Jr. allegedly drove a car into a crowd of protesters at high speed, then fled the scene by backing up. Nineteen other people were injured.

Fields was among a group of white nationalists protesting the removal of a Confederate statue in a Charlottesville park. Heyer was among the large number of counter-protesters last Saturday.

Monday night, Justin Moore, the Grand Dragon for the Loyal White Knights of Ku Klux Klan, said he was glad Heyer died in the attack.
