Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers pictured with Charlottesville rally attendee James Allsup

A picture of Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers is getting a lot of attention on social media. The picture shows the the 5th District representative with a large group of students at Washington State University. But one student in particular is the reason that the picture is going viral. James Allsup is in the picture.

The President of Washington State University's chapter of College Republicans attended Saturday's Unite the Right rally. In social media he condemned the violence and said he was in attendance to document the event.

We asked Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers about the picture. This is her spokesman's statement:

The Congresswoman is sickened by what took place in Charlottesville this weekend and that anyone from Eastern Washington would participate in white supremacist activities. She does not know the WSU College Republican President and does not support anyone who took part in the hateful events in Virginia. She often takes photos with student groups when visiting colleges throughout Eastern Washington; the photo circulating was taken after a debate she participated in at WSU before the 2016 election. As she said on Twitter, ‘My prayers are w/ #Charlottesville. Let's unite in standing against white supremacy and bigoted violence-it's repulsive & has no place here.’” - Jared Powell, Spokesman for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05).

White supremacist patriot rally coming to San Francisco counter-protest already planned

This is not a drill: The raging right is spreading from Charlottesville to San Francisco.

A right-wing, pro-Trump “Free Speech” rally was announced for San Francisco’s Crissy Field on Saturday, Aug. 26, and a counter-protest is already forming.

The group, Patriot Prayer, has already obtained its permits, according to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Some back and forth on the nitty gritty is still required before a final approval, but they’re essentially “in,” said Sonja Hanson, a spokesperson for the GGNRA.

A Facebook post claiming “Neo Nazis are coming to San Francisco” started to go viral Monday morning, which was posted alongside phone numbers for federal agencies responsible for granting permits for rallies at Crissy Field — a literal “call to action.”

Mayor Ed Lee’s hands are seemingly tied, as the protest is on federal land outside city jurisdiction. Still, he denounced the gathering.

“As the Mayor of San Francisco my primary responsibility is the safety and well-being of the residents of San Francisco. As such, I cannot condone a rally that incites hate, bigotry or violence,” Lee said in a statement.

“They will have their rally on federal land because the U.S. Constitution provides all of us the right to freedom of expression,” he added. “But as Mayor of this city, I say: Any message of hate is not welcome.”

On Facebook, a counter-protest called “Unafraid!” initially had 160 people planning to attend, though the event was shut down and re-started. Other resistance events, including Bay Resistance Brigade Paddle Out, also pledged to fight back.

Police: Holocaust memorial vandalized; 2nd time this summer

BOSTON - Police say a person is in custody for allegedly vandalizing the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston.

Police say the suspect smashed a glass panel on Monday.

It's the second time the memorial has been damaged this summer.

In June, authorities say James Isaac used a rock to shatter a roughly 9-foot tall glass panel on one of the memorial's six 54-foot-high towers. Isaac has pleaded not guilty to vandalism charges.

The six glass towers are lit internally and etched with millions of numbers that represent tattoos on the arms of many Jews sent to Nazi death camps.

The repaired memorial was rededicated in July.
