Maskless dad assaulted student who confronted him, police say

Florida police have arrested a man for assaulting a high school student who approached him over not complying with the local school district's mask mandate, CBS Miami reported.

Fort Lauderdale police arrested Dan Bauman after he pushed the student in the shoulder then twisted her arm aggressively, CBS Miami reported, citing a police report.

Bauman is the father of a 10th grade student who had showed up to the school and was turned away four times at the start of the school year there for not complying with the school district's mask requirement. He and his daughter had been turned away by administration officials for not wearing face coverings.

Bauman was charged with aggravated child abuse, CBS Miami reported.

The incident comes as Florida school districts attempt to impose mask mandates for students and administration officials despite an executive order by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) preventing such mandates by allowing parents to opt their children out of any such requirements.

South Dakota AG to take plea deal after fatally striking man with his car, prosecutor says

PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg will avoid a trial and take a plea deal for misdemeanor traffic charges in a crash last year in which he hit and killed a man who was walking along a rural highway, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Beadle County State’s Attorney Michael Moore, who is one of two prosecutors on the case, told The Associated Press that “there won’t be a trial and there will be a plea entered,” but he declined to discuss further details of the arrangement. The plea will be entered Thursday, when Ravnsborg’s trial was scheduled to begin, he said.

Moore said a judge’s order that bars state officials from disclosing details of the investigation prevented him from disclosing further details.

The attorney general's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ravnsborg, the state's top law enforcement officer, faced three misdemeanor charges that each carry sentences of up to 30 days in jail and up to a $500 fine.

Tuberville says it's Biden's fault people aren't taking low-wage fast food jobs

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is seizing on news that some Chick-fil-A restaurants have closed due to understaffing to attack President Joe Biden and his COVID-19 relief plan. But the federal program he and other Republicans falsely claim has incentivized people not to work has not been operational in Alabama since June.

Fox Business reported on Sunday that at least two Alabama Chick-fil-A restaurants had closed their dining rooms due to a lack of staff. The Chick-fil-A location in Madison cited a "hiring crisis," with "far less job applicants or people not showing up for their interviews." The McCalla store blamed a "staffing crisis" fueled by "both high school and university students returning back to school and football/holiday season quickly approaching."

Tuberville tweeted on Monday that the "Biden administration continues incentivizing people to sit on the sidelines instead of encouraging them to rejoin the workforce."

A Tuberville spokesperson did not immediately respond to an inquiry for this story. But he appears to be referring to emergency federal unemployment insurance benefits included in Biden's American Rescue Plan, such as the $300-a-week temporary federal subsidy for those who lost their jobs.
