Wisconsin GOP Ignores Trump

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Mixed feelings about presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump were on full display Saturday at the Wisconsin GOP convention, with Gov. Scott Walker and other officeholders not even speaking his name.

Those who did mention Trump urged supporting him as a necessity in order to defeat Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

"We can't let Hillary Clinton bring four more years of Barack Obama," said U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, whose north-central congressional district is one of two Trump won in Wisconsin's primary on April 5. Trump lost statewide to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz by 13 points, but hasn't lost a state since.

Wisconsin Republicans were more clearly united Saturday in support of Sen. Ron Johnson, who faces a tough re-election fight with Democrat Russ Feingold.

"That needs to be our clear focus," Walker said of the Senate race. "That's where we can have the biggest impact, not just in the state of Wisconsin but the nation as a whole."

How Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ Can Change the Movies

With Black Panther, we have a character who isn’t BFFs with any of the pre-chosen Avengers and whose motivations and backstory exists independently of his entanglements with them. He enters Civil War with ready-made drama and gravitas, and he maneuvers in the film shrouded in a sort of mystery. Sam and Rhodey are affable “regular guys,” but there is nothing “regular” about T’Challa. He is a genius with a mythical birthright and the ruler of a kingdom. And his allegiances are only to his people and his history. With a character so firmly connected and rooted in his cultural identity, he could become a transcendent pop culture figure in mainstream films. Even Ta-Nehisi Coates’ limited series comic book run of Black Panther has been selling out left and right.

There have been less-than-stellar examples of studios pushing superhero movies with black stars. Halle Berry’s 2005 vehicle Catwoman was a box office disaster that was more of a tossed-off action flick than a major studio blockbuster even before it was infamously ignored by audiences. Michael B. Jordan’s turn as The Human Torch in 2015’s massive flop Fantastic Four didn’t do much to raise the profile of black superheroes; it will be remembered more for the controversy surrounding his casting. The powers-that-be in Hollywood should be warned against using these famously failed projects as reason to continue centering white superheroes; there’s far more evidence that audiences are eager for more varied presentations given the current cultural climate.

The backlash against films like Ghost In the Shell and Gods of Egypt has been loud and, in the case of Gods, directly affected its bottom line. Add to that the conversation sparked by #OscarsSoWhite and you have a brewing pop culture shift. If Hollywood is paying attention, it has already recognized that audiences are savvy enough and vocal enough to make an impression on how an upcoming film will be received—and “all white everything” is no longer a viable option.

Fans Begin Petition to Save Agent Carter

ABC may have canceled Agent Carter, but its fans are hoping it can find a second life on Netflix. A Spanish fan has started a Change.org petition asking Netflix to resurrect the now canceled Marvel show for a third season. "Agent Carter was a show who united a lot of people, just for Peggy," the petition reads. "Her fandom is really united, we all love Peggy. Her series has been canceled, but we can bring her to NETFLIX!"

While Agent Carter received critical acclaim over its two seasons, it struggled in the ratings and was cancelled last week. Netflix is seen as a natural new home for Agent Carter, as the streaming service is host to six different Marvel TV series. Complicating matters is that Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell has already moved on to a new ABC series Conviction, although Atwell promised to make both shows work if Agent Carter were to be renewed.

The petition is hoping for 25,000 signatures and, at the time of this article, has nearly reached its goal with nearly 22,000. Of course, this isn't the first time fans have hoped Netflix would save a superhero show. In 2014, fans petitioned the service to greenlight new episodes of the DC cartoon Young Justice. While Young Justice producers teased Netflix was interested, the streaming service has yet to make any announcement about that other TV series.

Nerdist: Why 'Agent Carter" is the Hero We Deserve.

Agent Carter was the first female led comic book-inspired TV show in these modern times when it’s almost easier to name a series not based on sequential art. It was overdue in that way, and also in that it was about time Peggy got more room to breathe. Seeing her pop up regularly in the MCU always made me grin, but at some point, it felt a little insulting for them to keep mentioning Peggy’s importance or giving us a scene or two without giving us the opportunity to sit down with her for hours and get to know her in a post-First Avenger world. Peggy deserved more. She still does.

Over the course of two seasons, we got intimate with Peggy. The series—executive produced by Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas—showcased Peggy’s resourceful, effective combat skills and badassery to be sure, but maybe more importantly, it didn’t shy away from lingering on Peggy’s struggles. She battled sexism throughout the first season and was forced to work around the S.S.R. to get answers. She processed the loss of Steve and found her way to opening her heart again. She wrestled with survivor’s guilt. Peggy was never in danger of being one dimensional.

Though we saw the S.S.R. finally recognize Peggy as a valuable asset—if not the most valuable one—the story shouldn’t be over. Season two ended with a threat being posed to the organization and to Peggy. Agent Carter didn’t get far enough along the timeline to show the first days of S.H.I.E.L.D. Given the role S.H.I.E.L.D. has played in the MCU, its beginning shouldn’t be limited to an offhanded comment or a couple of scenes in a movie or on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That’s what I’m worried will happen to Peggy, and that’s not enough.

When we talk about fantastical settings and heroes, we often discuss the relatability factor. It’s not necessary for us to see ourselves in the shoes of someone like Thor, but it’s important to understand his motivations and what grounds him. That helps us connect. And that’s what I love about Peggy and why I’m not ready to let her go. She’s easy to relate to: Her spunk, sass, determination, brawler fighting style—all of it is special and everyday at the same time. Peggy is utterly human and completely wonderful, and it’s a state I both aspire to and am inspired by.

Peggy fought to prove herself. We stood beside Peggy and Agent Carter as they went up against clueless males and ratings, respectively. We saw ourselves to some degree in Peggy, and also in her foes Dottie and Whitney. We watched Peggy explore questions of morality, experience loss, and move forward with her chin up and fists out regardless of the chaos raining down upon her. We became friends with Peggy, and so we want the best for her.

And the best is for her story to continue in a meaningful, considered way. Peggy is a feminist hero, and the MCU needs her. I need her. I know your value, Peggy, even if ABC does not.

Jessica Jones Season 2 To Focus On Repercussions Of Kilgrave And Feature More Side Characters

It is hard to believe that it has been nearly six months since the first season of Jessica Jones hit Netflix and we were introduced to the troubled private investigator. It was building off the heels of success of Daredevil and with the Marvel logo slapped on it, the majority of audiences loved every bit of it. A big reason why the show works so well is the portrayal of Jessica Jones that Krysten Ritter absolutely nailed. With Melissa Rosenberg on board as the showrunner, the duo kicked off another great corner of the MCU and it has already been renewed for a second season.

Currently, Netflix and Marvel are filming Iron Fist, which will debut early next year after Luke Cage and prior to The Defenders team up mini-series. Post Defenders, season 2 of Jessica Jones will have to fight with The Punisher spin-off series to see who debuts first, but all indications are pointing towards Jessica and company getting priority. Rosenberg recently talked to Nerdist about season 2 and what we can expect. They are early on in the pre-production process, but Rosenberg knows they will deal with how Jessica feels after willingly killing Kilgrave (David Tennant).

Michael B. Jordan Joins Marvel's 'Black Panther'

Michael B Jordan will reteam with his Creed director Ryan Coogler for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, inking a deal to join movie's buzzy cast, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

This would be the third time that Jordan will work with Coogler, who is helming the comic book movie as well as writing the script with Joe Robert Cole. The first time the duo came together was for the indie drama Fruitvale Station.

Chadwick Boseman is toplining Black Panther while Lupita Nyong’o is in negotiations to star alongside him.

It is unclear who Jordan would play but one source told THR that it could be a villain. Marvel had no comment.

Boseman and Black Panther were introduced in Captain America: Civil War, which crossed the $700 million worldwide mark in under a week and a half.
