CNN: Priebus To Seek Re-Election As RNC Chairman

Reince Priebus will run for re-election as chairman of the Republican National Committee, CNN reports.

According to CNN, Priebus on Friday sought support from top GOP officials throughout the country. Early indications are that he is a favorite to continue as chairman.

From CNN:

Several officials familiar with the process said they think as of now Priebus has enough support to win.

"He is reaching out to members about his plans to run for re-election. He enjoys deep support on the committee, and I expect him to be re-elected with overwhelming support support (sic). At this point, no one else is making any efforts to contact RNC members about challenging Priebus," one RNC member told CNN, on the condition of anonymity.

Seriously? Tesbagger (former) friend on FB attack my son's class for voting for Obama.

Last week, my son's first grade class at his PRIVATE catholic school held a mock election where Obama won 24 votes to Romney's 2. The teacher just recently put a poster with the results in the hallway bulletin board and I thought it was so nice that I took a picture and posted it onto my Facebook page. Unfortunately, some of the teabaggers on my list are still pretty sore over election Night, because I got got replies such as "Californians.." and "Even children like to get stuff for free".

I know it's hard to lose an election. I've been there. But if you're at the point where you insults kids for the way they vote, you really need to assess how old you are compared to the way you're acting.

PPP: Republican governors highly vulnerable in PA, FL, OH and ME

Many of the Republicans who were swept into office by the wave election of 2010 may have a hard time winning a second term if 2014 doesn't prove to be another huge year for their party.

In Pennsylvania Tom Corbett trails a generic Democrat 47/37. In Maine Paul LePage trails a hypothetical opponent from the opposite party 49/41. Both of them became unpopular pretty early in their terms and have stayed that way.

Other Republicans who look highly vulnerable next time around are Florida's Rick Scott who trails a generic Democrats 48/44, and Ohio's John Kasich who leads a potential foe only 44/43. The good news for these folks at least is that their numbers have been on an upward trajectory during their second year in office- they both trailed by much wider margins at this time a year ago.

Three other Republican Governors elected in 2010 lead hypothetical Democratic opponents for 2014 by single digit margins- they look like favorites for now but could become more vulnerable. Those are Michigan's Rick Snyder (47/41 against a generic Dem), Wisconsin's Scott Walker (50/43), and Iowa's Terry Branstad (49/40). All three of these Governors posted pretty poor numbers during their first year in office but have seen significant improvement in their standing in year 2.

Gov. Martinez Says Romney Remark ‘Sets Us Back’

Add New Mexico governor Susana Martinez (R) to the list of Republican leaders upset with Mitt Romney's claim that President Obama won the election by doling out "gifts" to minorities, youth, and women.

"That unfortunately is what sets us back as a party -- our comments that are not thought through carefully," Martinez told Yahoo's Chris Moody. Martinez, who previously criticized Romney's "47 percent" remarks in September, added that his fundraiser video was a "ridiculous statement."

"You want to earn the vote of every single person you can earn, whether they be someone who relies on," she said. "Why would you ever write off 47 percent?"

One last precinct reporting late: My son's 1st grade class.

Apparently my son's class held a vote on Election Day and the teacher was a bit late posting the results on the class bulletin board. Barack Obama overwhelmingly carried the Mission Dolores Academy 1st grade class by a margin of 26 votes to 2 votes for Romney. Obama even picked up the vote of one child whose parents voted for the other guy. The future looks pretty bright for our side.

Orrin Hatch Weighs In On The '47 Percent,' Says It's Really 51 Percent

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney got it wrong: It's not 47 percent of the nation that is not paying federal income taxes.

"It's 51 percent!" Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said Wednesday.

Hatch, who often talks about the percentage of Americans who don't have to pay Uncle Sam -- aside from payroll taxes -- offered that clarification after he was asked whether he has concerns about fallout from a losing presidential campaign in which Romney's use of the 47 percent figure played a prominent role. Romney argued at a secretly recorded fundraising event that he wasn't concerned about the 47 percent because they wouldn't vote for him.

Hatch argued that Romney's comments "had an effect, but I don't think much of an effect," so he was not worried.

He also clarified what he thinks Romney meant and should have said.

"It was distorted because Romney did not explain it right," Hatch said. "All he had to say was 'Look, when 51 percent of all households -- not just individuals -- don't pay a penny in income taxes, it shows that we've got too many people riding in the wagon.' What he should have said is, 'I want to get them out of the wagon in good jobs where they can also help pull the wagon.'

CA Senate President: Prop 8 may go back on the ballot.

Will Senate leader Darrell Steinberg mention Proposition 8 at the Harry S. Truman Democratic Club luncheon he's headlining in downtown Sacramento today?

During a chat with The Bee's editorial board Wednesday, Steinberg said he could envision the Democrat-controlled Legislature using its new-found two-thirds majority power to put a gay-marriage referendum on a future statewide ballot.

"Depending upon what the Supreme Court might or might not do with Proposition 8, in coalition with stakeholders and the gay and lesbian leadership, if it were appropriate and necessary to put a repeal of Prop. 8 on the ballot with our two-thirds supermajority, I would be open to that," the Sacramento Democrat said.

The U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether to hear an appeal by groups that support the voter-approved 2008 ballot measure, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the law unconstitutional, prompting an appeal to the high court. The court will announce whether it will take the case by the end of this month, which would set it on a path for a final ruling next year.

Arizona Republicans Found Out Barack Obama Won Re-Election, and Things Got Very Awkward

At the Arizona Republican Party's election-viewing party at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix last night, the moment came that precisely none of the scheduled speakers was prepared for -- on a large screen to the right of the stage, Fox News declared that President Obama had won re-election.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Mongtomery was stuck on stage speaking while this came up, and with the 15 minutes before that moment, combined with the 15 minutes after, we found out there is a scenario more awkward than being in a room full of nothing but Republicans -- being in a room full of nothing but really baffled and grouchy Republicans.

This chain of events started with Governor Jan Brewer -- whose mood we'll describe as "bubbly" -- as she took the stage next to the cardboard cutout of Mitt Romney, which remained on the stage throughout this whole process.

Brewer got the heavy cheers for saying she wanted to get "Buh-rack Obama out of the White House."

Teachers union says San Francisco students shorted

San Francisco teachers union officials have refused to name names, but said Thursday they stand behind their allegations that some district schools are violating state law by depriving students of science, history, art, physical education and other required subjects to focus solely on boosting math and English scores.

The claim was first raised by union President Dennis Kelly in two newspaper op-ed pieces during the United Educators of San Francisco's campaign to oust incumbent school board members.

If the claims are true, teaching only math and English would be a violation of the state's education code and district policy, which requires a comprehensive curriculum at all grade levels.

"The relentless push to increase test scores is driving excellent teaching out of the classroom and replacing it with rote instruction that is hyper-focused on the tests," Kelly wrote in a Nov. 1 letter to a local newspaper. "How bad is it? At one Superintendent's Zone school, every subject except for math and English has been eliminated from the curriculum in many classrooms: no science, no social studies, no art, no music."

Christopher Castillo Arrested After Threatening To Kill Obama On Facebook

Some people just don't know when to stop talking, or when to stop posting on Facebook.

A Florida man was arrested this November after posting threatening messages about President Barack Obama on Facebook. When Secret Service agents came to question 28-year-old Christopher Castillo about his violent comments, The Smoking Gun reports that the situation quickly deteriorated.

On Nov. 1, Castillo wrote the following on Facebook, apparently in response to Obama's views on health care:

That’s the last straw, if he gets re-elected I’m going to hunt him down and kill him watch the life disappear from his eyes.
