Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid announced Friday morning that he’s retiring, and he’s wasting no time trying to coronate his successor. The Washington Post is reporting that the outgoing senator—who would have been up for re-election in 2016—says he favors the state’s former attorney general, Catherine Cortez Masto, as his replacement.

The Nevada Senate race in 2016 could be pretty interesting. Reid was widely perceived as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents, but his open seat could give Republicans an even better pickup opportunity (though that thesis is hotly debated, as Jeff Singer details at Daily Kos Elections).

If Cortez Masto runs, she could be quite competitive. After being term-limited out of the attorney general’s office, she became executive vice chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, which oversees colleges and universities in the state. During her short time there, she’s drawn national attention for her position on campus carry legislation. USA Today reports that current Nevada policy gives college presidents veto power over whether or not someone can carry a weapon on campus. But the Nevada Legislature is considering legislation that would take that power away from them, allowing people over 21 to carry concealed weapons on college campuses. Cortez Masto is an adamant opponent of that change.

“The law works right now and from our perspective, it does not need to be changed,” she told USA Today. “The need for them to have this broad authority to carry a concealed weapons doesn’t exist. This is a solution in search for a problem that doesn’t exist.”

Former Twitter employee Tina Huang has launched a proposed class-action lawsuit, claiming her former employer has a complicated promotion system that unfairly favors men over women.

In her complaint, which was obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, Huang's lawyers describe how she was denied a promotion in 2013.

According to the suit, there are eight titles in the engineering department's hierarchy, which Twitter calls its "technical ladder." The company posts job descriptions on its web site, but they're allegedly meant to attract interest to Twitter only, and don't necessarily reflect actual job openings.

Current employees cannot apply for them, the complaint says.

Though employees can nominate themselves for promotions during regular performance reviews, typically "employees are tapped on the shoulder for advancement," according to the complaint, and it's the manager who's responsible for making a case as to why a particular employee should be promoted.

(Bloomberg) -- A jury rejected Ellen Pao’s claims of gender discrimination by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, in a case that riveted Silicon Valley for weeks and exposed how women fare in the male-dominated world of venture capital.

The verdict followed testimony by two dozen witnesses who variously painted Kleiner as unfriendly to women and Pao as a difficult employee. The decision set aside Pao’s claims that the firm where she worked for seven years valued and judged women and men according to different standards.

The suit and the revelations in court send “a clear message to the business community that they need to take these allegations more seriously,” said Deborah Rhode, a Stanford Law School professor. “I think it’s a real wake-up call to the Silicon Valley community in general and the venture capital industry in particular.”

The Pao trial opened a rare window on the world of venture capital firms that line Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, California. Her case attracted attention not only for its sensational claims, but also because of Kleiner’s stature. And the trial took place as the technology industry wrestled with a gender imbalance that has drawn harsh criticism.
