Newsday endorses Hillary Clinton for Democratic nomination

http://www.newsday.com/opinion/editorial/newsday-endorses-hillary-clinton-for-democratic-nomination-1.11694438

THE BOTTOM LINE
- The right blend of knowledge, skill and experience.

Hillary Clinton, who is aiming to shatter the nation’s highest glass ceiling, has the right blend of knowledge, skill and experience to be an outstanding candidate for president.

We have seen her in action for decades — as an active first lady; as an effective eight-year senator who delivered for New York, including billions in federal aid to rebuild New York City after 9/11; and in four years as secretary of state, when she played a critical role in levying crippling sanctions on Iran and in the killing of Osama bin Laden.

That experience on the world stage makes her the best choice to deal with its complicated troubles, especially terrorism, a newly belligerent Russia and an increasingly militaristic China.

Her long service and many scars from more than 30 years of political battles make Clinton a superb manager, with a knowledge of issues unmatched by any candidate.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has sketched his vision for the nation’s future in the Technicolor strokes of a populist revolution. But articulating that is one thing. Getting us there is quite another.

We like that Sanders can inspire. But we have more faith in Clinton’s ability to actually move America forward. That’s why Newsday is endorsing Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primary.

Observations from a poll watcher: Day 1 of MD early voting

I spent a couple hours holding Hillary signs and passing out literature at the polls in MD this afternoon and have a couple quick comments.'

1. It was fun. If you haven't already volunteered to do this and can spare the time, try it out sometime if you can. It's a good way to meet people and have a pleasant afternoon.

2. I was the only Hillary volunteer there. There were NO Bernie volunteers there while I was. There were several supporters of both Chris Van Hollen and Donna Edwards. All were very passionate about their candidates. Both are GOOD candidates. It's literally a toss-up as to which one will win the primary.

3. There were tons of Trump signs and a couple of Cruz signs. None for Kasich. No one was physically present who would admit to supporting either candidate, LOL.

4. The most exciting race going is for the county school board. This is generally apolitical. I personally spoke with several candidates who were holding their own signs. The most impressive, IMO, was a young man - currently in college - who was quite passionate about what he felt needed to be changed and how he is planning to do it. I might actually vote for him.

5. Based on my very informal exit poll assessment, i.e., the number of people who nodded and smiled at me and gave me thumbs-up signs, Hillary is winning in early voting by strong margins. There were also several people who shared how excited they were to be voting for the first woman US President. One woman stopped by to tell me that she is an Independent who specifically changed her voting registration to vote for Hillary (!) - and now will change back to Independent. So much for Hillary not attracting Indies!

May the Force be with Hillary in all state primaries through April 26! Let's get this primary season over with and stop ALL talk of a contested convention in its tracks!

Make room UTB for Samwise Gamgee!

Had a great treat tonight at our local HRC phone bank session!

The organizers requested that we wrap up our calls for a moment and then introduced actor Sean Astin, aka Samwise Gamgee of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, among others.

Astin gave us a great Hillary rallying speech. He's behind her 150 percent (if not more), is very active in HRC's campaign and was passing through to see how her campaign here in MD is going. Our early voting begins tomorrow, April 14, and will go until April 21. He also mentioned that his mom, the late Patty Duke, was a strong Hillary supporter. Services will be held for her in ID this weekend and Sean will be there.

He told us that the first time he met Hillary was in CO in 1992, when she was campaigning there for Bill. According to him, her appearance there was electrifying and everyone wondered - even at the time - why SHE was not the one running for President.

Now that she IS running, there is absolutely NO question of his support for her!

Hillary Clinton does a better job than Bernie Sanders of explaining the details of his bank breakup

http://www.vox.com/2016/4/13/11415772/clinton-sanders-daily-news

There are many contrasts between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, but one important one is the different stance they take toward policy detail: Clinton really loves it, and Sanders really does not.

There's no better way to see this than to look at the respective interviews they gave to the New York Daily News editorial board.

Young Hillary Clinton Supporters Decry ‘Ideological Purity’

http://time.com/4290265/hillary-clinton-millennial-new-york-primary-voters-brooklyn/

This is an interesting read. It is also heartening to see that not all millennials have been taken in by promises of free things for everyone.

As in other states, Bernie Sanders is winning younger voters in New York decisively. But Hillary Clinton’s millennial supporters in the Big Apple aren’t willing to concede the fight yet.

Take Edward Delman, a 25-year-old writer and volunteer, who on a recent Monday was wearing black-rimmed glasses and a T-shirt that said “Yas Queen”—a reference to the comedy show Broad City—above a drawing of Clinton. He organized a Millennials for Hillary event at a Brooklyn bar specifically to fight the “narrative that the kids are for Bernie.”

Like other younger Clinton supporters, Delman says he’s troubled by the views of some of his Sanders-supporting peers, who he says are obsessed with “ideological purity.”

“There’s a culture that’s developed where we are assigning moral values to political positions,” he said. “I think they see it as ‘if you haven’t had a spotless record, if you’ve ever changed your mind on anything, you must be tainted.’”

ShondaLand for Hillary: DC Clinton Fundraiser

Scandal Cast Will Help Fundraise for Hillary Clinton in D.C.

Real life or TV? A former First Lady-turned-Senator looks to famous friends as she makes a run for the presidency.

In a can’t-make-this-up move, the cast of ABC’s fictional White House drama Scandal is helping real-life presidential contender Hillary Clinton raise cash later this month for her Democratic bid.

Cast members of Shonda Rhimes’ political drama—including its President, ex-First Lady and the White House Chief of Staff—will join Clinton donors and senior advisers on Wednesday, April 27. It comes just days before the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, which co-mingles Hollywood and Washington for a series of high-wattage celebrity events.

The most definitive article to date: Vatican: Pope Didn't Invite Bernie Sanders

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/04/10/vatican-pope-didn-t-invite-bernie-sanders.html

ROME—Not since Pope Francis’s ill-advised meeting with gay marriage opponent Kim Davis has there been so much “he said, she said” controversy about the pope meddling in American politics.

On Friday, Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders announced that he was “very excited” about having just received an invitation to speak at a small, invitation-only scholarly conference at the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences conference celebrating the 25th year anniversary of an encyclical “Centesimus Annus,” written by Pope John Paul II on the evils of capitalism.

Francis is not expected to attend the conference, which will take place April 15 and 16 with around 30 participants, including Bolivian president Evo Morales and Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa. Francis will be traveling to Lesbos, Greece, on the 16th to shed light on the Syrian refugee crisis there.

The Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told The Daily Beast that it wasn’t the pope who personally invited the politician. “The invitation was made on behalf of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, not by Pope Francis,” he said. “There is no expectation that the pope will meet Mr. Sanders.” He then added that he could not completely exclude the possibility, but that nothing was on the agenda at the moment.
...
Sorondo later toned down his initial comments telling CNN the invitation should not be seen as an endorsement of the senator’s nomination. “It does not signify any support of the campaign," Sorondo said. "We want to establish a dialogue between North America and South America so we thought to invite a [U.S.] politician. The President of Bolivia will also be there. Perhaps the others (candidates) would have been interested but they did not request to come."

He also confirmed to CNN that Sanders had reached out to the Vatican first. “He has expressed an interest many times in the Pope's encyclical and it's clear that he has an interest in studying it,” Sorondo said.
“It might have that effect, but we are not looking to support the campaign."

Confirmation from the Academy that a) Bernie (or a surrogate) reached out first and b) requested to attend.

Hillary Clinton announces endorsements from Maryland women

Hillary will be in Baltimore tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend. But my excuse is a good one - I'm spending the weekend with my youngest grandsons (7 & 5) who are a hoot and very precious to me. They are among the many reasons why I so want this highly qualified women to be the next President of the United States!

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nation-world/presidential-elections/bal-hillary-clinton-announces-endorsements-from-maryland-women-20160409-story.html

The extensive list includes Bel Leong-Hong, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense who is one of Maryland's super delegates, state Sen. Joanne C. Benson of Prince George's County and former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, who is running this year to reclaim City Hall.

Clinton, who is scheduled to visit Port Covington on Sunday, has captured support from more women voters than Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in most of the states that have conducted exit polling, and the announcement Saturday is intended to send a message of solidarity with the critical constituency.

The former secretary of state led Maryland women 60 percent to 35 percent in a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll released on Thursday.

"Hillary Clinton has been breaking down barriers and seeking to empower women both nationally and internationally for her entire career," Leong-Hong said in a statement. "Hillary knows that when women succeed, families succeed, and communities succeed."

Bernie Sanders’ PUMA Moment: Hillary Clinton ‘Not Qualified"

This article includes the entire exchange between Joe Scar and Hillary and illustrates exactly how Bernie's full-scale attack on HIllary was unwarranted and unacceptable.

And still not apologized for.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/04/07/bernie-sanders-puma-moment-hillary-clinton-not-qualified.html

I don’t know how you read that, but I read it as Scarborough trying four times to get Clinton to say outright that Bernie Sanders is not qualified to be president, and her refusing to do so. She came sorta close; The Washington Post headlined a write up on it “Clinton questions whether Sanders is qualified to be president,” but she never said the words, and after attempt number four, she retreated to the standard, and appropriate, dodge about it being up to the voters. From there, the interview moved on to other topics.

And what did Sanders do? This, in a speech in Philadelphia Wednesday night.

She has been saying lately that she thinks that I am not qualified to be president.
...
Wait. What? “Has been saying”? “Has been saying,” as if she’d said it seven times? She didn’t even say it once!

Now—Sanders apologists will scream that she started it, and even neutral observers, if there are any, may be confused. But there’s a big difference between saying “raises serious questions” and “I’ll leave it to the voters to decide,” and saying flat out that one’s primary opponent is “not qualified.”

Clinton is still the favorite to win the nomination. I heard Chuck Todd say Wednesday morning that Sanders needs to win 67 percent of the remaining pledged delegates to overtake her lead. Since all delegates are awarded proportionally, and since there aren’t likely to be many huge blowouts in the upcoming states (we’re almost done with caucuses), that seems a tall order.
...
Why all these numbers? Just to show that it’s still likely that at the end of the process, Clinton will be ahead, and Sanders will have to endorse her. Not certain, of course, but likely. So the question is, how can he endorse her after saying flat out that she’s not qualified to be president?

Well, politicians have their ways. “She’s better than Trump/Cruz.” But won’t it ring awfully hollow? For her part, Clinton, looking toward a future mending of fences, brushed off Sanders’s remarks. It’s worth noting, too, that back in 2008, Clinton gave up the fight in early June right after the primaries ended and endorsed Obama. One has trouble picturing Sanders doing the same, if it comes to that, and what he said Wednesday night makes it even less likely.
April 7, 2016

Why indeed?

If he had even apologized for his untruth (she said he was unqualified) and his slur, I might agree with you.

Instead, he has doubled down. So has his campaign.

And you are, btw, in the HRC Group.
