Sen. Mitch McConnell Campaign Headquarters Recording

In a private meeting, the Senate GOP leader and campaign aides discussed using the actor/activist's mental health and religious views as political ammo.

On February 2, Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Senate GOP leader facing reelection next year, held a private meeting at his Louisville, Kentucky, campaign headquarters with several aides to discuss opposition research collected on his potential challengers and how best to defeat possible foes. Much of the conversation focused on actor/activist Ashley Judd, who at the time was the most prominent of McConnell's potential Democratic opponents, and McConnell and his aides considered assailing Judd for her past struggles with depression and for her religious views. (Judd has since announced she will not run against McConnell.) Mother Jones has obtained a recording of the meeting. Here is the article based on the recording. Below is a complete transcript of the recording.

Ex-US soldier who 'fought in Syria' could face execution

A former US soldier who allegedly fought Syrian government forces with a group linked to al-Qaeda could face the death penalty, prosecutors have said.

They told a court that Eric Harroun, 30, could face execution if his actions are found to have caused a death.

During interviews with the FBI, Mr Harroun allegedly said he had shot 10 people in Syria, but was not sure if he had killed anyone.

He was denied bail at Monday's hearing in Alexandria, Virginia.

Mr Harroun, who has been charged with using a weapon outside the US, allegedly fought in Syria with the al-Nusra Front.

US now naming force-fed Guantanamo prisoners

Source: ap

The U.S. government has begun notifying lawyers of Guantanamo Bay prisoners if the men they represent are being force-fed to prevent them from starving to death in a hunger strike that has dragged on for more than two months, though its extent remains in dispute.

Cori Crider, a lawyer for Yemeni prisoner Samir Mukbel, said she received notification from the Department of Justice late last week that her client was being force-fed and was permitted to speak with him by phone Monday to confirm the report.
Crider, who works for the British legal rights group Reprieve, said Mukbel told her he joined the hunger strike in February, has lost about 30 pounds and at one point fainted and had to be hospitalized at the prison on the U.S. base in Cuba. He described the feeding process as painful.

"Some people have gone through this a lot but he said he had never felt anything like it in his life," she said shortly after the call.

The U.S. military generally does not discuss specific prisoners in part because doing so might violate provisions of the Geneva Conventions that prohibit making a public spectacle of prisoners, said Navy Capt. Robert Durand, a spokesman for the detention center. As part of that policy, officials have not confirmed the identities of individual hunger strikers, though there has at times been indirect confirmation in court papers as part of the process through which the men challenge their confinement in federal court.

There were 42 prisoners listed as hunger strikers Monday under the military guidelines, which include missing nine consecutive meals. Of that group, 11 were being force fed, Durand said.

Mother shot dead holding infant daughter at Idaho pit-bull breeding pot farm

The two-month-old girl was discovered unharmed along with the bodies of her mother and two other men. Marijuana worth approximately $95K was also discovered at the crime scene.

Two men and a mother with her baby daughter still in her arms were found shot dead at an alleged pot and pit bull breeding farm in rural Idaho, police say.

The bodies of Yavette Chivon Carter, 27, her boyfriend Trent Jon Christensen, 32, and his dad Brent Christensen, 61, were all discovered at the Holbrook property on Friday.

Cops say a man coming to pick up a dog at around 1 p.m. saw a two-year-old girl sitting on the front steps.
Walking inside, he found the trio of corpses - and the two-month-old baby still being cradled by her mom.

Cops say 70 pit bulls, believed to be involved in a dog fighting ring, were chained up in the back yard. Marijuana worth around $95,000 was also discovered.

Chelsea Clinton doesn’t rule out bid for public office

After years of refusing to talk to the press, Chelsea Clinton has gradually raised her public profile over the past year, inking a deal as a special correspondent for NBC News and taking on a more prominent role in the Clinton Foundation—run by her father, former President Bill Clinton.

Not surprisingly, that has led to speculation about the former first daughter’s future. Could she be thinking about a run for public office? In an interview with her employer, NBC News, on Monday, Clinton didn’t quite rule it out.

“Right now I'm grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative,” Clinton said in an interview that aired on the “Today Show.” “If at some point that weren't true, and I thought I could make a meaningful and measurably greater impact, I'd have to ask and answer that question.”

She offered a similar response in a Q&A with Parade Magazine, admitting it’s something that she would have considered before Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2008 White House bid.

US Army Reserve training: Catholicism, like Ku Klux Klan and Al-Qaeda, an example of ‘religious extremism’

A slide presentation used in training US Army Reserves in Pennsylvania has included Catholicism and evangelical Christianity on a list of 18 religious extremist organizations. Also included on the list of religious extremists are Al-Qaeda, the Ku Klux Klan, Hamas, Sunni Muslims, and “Islamophobia.”

“Every religion has some followers that believe that their beliefs, customs, and traditions are the only ‘right way’ and that all others are practicing their faith ‘the wrong way,’ seeing and believing that their faith/religion [is] superior to all others,” the slide explained.

“Extremist organizations’ goals are inconsistent with the Army’s goals, beliefs, and values with regard to equal opportunity,” another slide stated. Soldiers are prohibited from “participating in” an extremist organization’s “public demonstration or rally,” from “taking a visible leadership role” in the organization, or “distributing literature” on behalf of the organization, whether “on or off a military installation.”

The slide presentation prompted a protest from the Archdiocese for the Military Services.

North Korea: Putin In 'Chernobyl' Warning

Source: Sky News

Vladimir Putin said a war in Korea could be more devastating than the Chernobyl disaster - as Pyongyang was warned against another nuclear test.

The Russian President said he was "worried about the escalation on the Korean peninsula, because we are neighbours".

And Mr Putin, who also praised a US decision to postpone a planned missile test as part of efforts to reduce tensions, said he feared a situation worse than that in Chernobyl after a nuclear accident that was later linked to thousands of deaths.

"If, God forbid, something happens, Chernobyl which we all know a lot about, may seem like a child's fairy tale," he said.
