In a Nevada county, election conspiracies sow deep distrust

In response, the commission put a remarkable item on its agenda: Ditch the county's voting machines and instead count every vote on every ballot - more than 20,000 in a typical general election - entirely by hand.

Merlino will step down next week and leave the administration of elections in a county the size of New Hampshire to a new clerk; the most likely candidate to succeed her is someone who has promoted voting machine conspiracy theories and falsely contends that Trump actually won the 2020 election.

County commissioners say they are obligated to take action as a way to re-establish trust in elections, a concern that fed into their vote to recommend hand-counting ballots in the upcoming November election rather than use tabulating machines.

Election experts are skeptical that hand-counting is doable anywhere except in the tiniest counties; Nye County has about 31,500 registered voters.

At a dimly lit Mexican restaurant in Pahrump, an hour's drive from Las Vegas, activists attending a recent Nye County "GOP Unity" event attributed support for hand-counting to what they claimed were unexplained irregularities and suspicions about election tampering.

After a mostly quiet tenure, the self-described "Personal responsibility Republican" said she has been sickened to witness fictions and falsehoods taking root in her county and politicizing the work of her fellow election workers in Nevada.

County residents who deny the results of the 2020 presidential election without evidence yell at her and her staff while in line to vote.

Why Does Anyone Care If Clarence Thomas Is Nice? He's Still Taking Away Your Basic Rights

For a Supreme Court justice who's notoriously tight lipped, Clarence Thomas has sure been in the news a lot.

Since his appointment to the court by President George H.W. Bush, Thomas has carried relatively the same beliefs.

Being nice is not a qualification for the Supreme Court.

Betcha she doesn't care how "Personable" Thomas is.

Why are media outlets fixated on the personalities of Supreme Court justices? Excuse me for being literal, but I don't believe Thomas "Cares about people actually as individuals" when he's willing to sacrifice the well-being of so damn many people on the alter of originalism.

Someone who knows the names of people he works with but is committed to the erosion of rights that inflict pain and suffering on the most vulnerable in society is worthless.

JD Vance Suggests People in 'Violent' Marriages Shouldn't Get Divorced

JD Vance said people need to be more willing to stay in unhappy marriages for the sake of their kids-and seemed to suggest that in some cases, "Even violent" marriages should continue.

"This is one of the great tricks that I think the sexual revolution pulled on the American populace, which is the idea that like, 'well, OK, these marriages were fundamentally, you know, they were maybe even violent, but certainly they were unhappy. And so getting rid of them and making it easier for people to shift spouses like they change their underwear, that's going to make people happier in the long term,'" Vance said.

When asked follow-up question of whether "He thinks people in violent marriages should generally stay together or get divorced," a Vance spokesperson said they felt Vance's statement already answered this question.

A Vance campaign spokesperson said that Vance does not support changes to current law with regard to divorce.

MILAN (AP) — Italian vessels have recovered five bodies and rescued 674 people packed on a fishing boat adrift in the Mediterranean off the Libyan coast, the Italian Coast Guard said Sunday, while European charities reported saving more than 500 more.

Some of the survivors had to be plucked from the sea in the Italian operation Saturday that was carried out 120 miles (190 kilometers) off the coast of Calabria by a Navy mercantile ship, three Coast Guard patrol boats and a financial police boat. All of those rescued were brought to ports in Calabria and Sicily.

2 apparent homophobic attacks reported after Berlin Pride

Source: Associated Press

VIENNA (AP) — Two apparent homophobic attacks were reported following Berlin’s annual pro-LGBTQ Christopher Street Day celebration on Saturday, police said Sunday.

In one incident, two girls, aged 16 and 17, and a 15-year-old boy were confronted by a group of nine people in Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood on Saturday evening. The group approached the two girls and made anti-gay remarks to the two girls, police said, presumably because of their clothing.

When the 16-year-old girl answered, one man in the group knocked her hat off her head and tripped her, causing her to fall to the ground. When she stood back up, the same man punched her in the face, then fled.

Dover travel chaos enters third day as queues also block access to Eurotunnel

Source: The Guardian

Holidaymakers hoping to travel to France have been told to expect a third day of disruption as the Eurotunnel was hit by long queues of traffic trying to reach Dover.

Passengers hoping to cross the Channel on Sunday were told to expect delays of at least two hours due to miles of tailbacks to get to the ferry terminals.

A day after authorities declared a critical incident at Dover, officials were handing out food and water to those stuck on the way to the crossing in Folkestone.

Former President Trump speaks to young conservatives at Turning Point USA's Student Action Summit

TAMPA - Former President Donald Trump continues to hint at another run.

Trump also told the crowd of young conservatives it was essential to fight "Woke" ideology in schools and the military.

Louis Mayes was among those snapping selfies with top Republicans before Trump spoke.

"Unfortunately I voted for Joe and seeing the terrible job he did with Afghanistan, I thought well, 'Donald Trump can't be that bad.'".

He regrets his Trump vote, saying the former president is just too polarizing.

Recent poll results from the Center for American Politics at Harvard University show Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis as the clearly favored Republican candidates for the presidential nomination.

Most there believe it is a matter of when and not if Trump will announce he plans to run again.

Texas man detained in 4 California killings from decades ago

Source: Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man has been arrested in Texas in connection with the Southern California slayings of four women decades ago, police said.

Billy Ray Richardson, 76, was arrested on Thursday by detectives from the Los Angeles and suburban Inglewood police departments with the assistance of officers from Fort Worth, Texas, police.

Richardson was charged by Los Angeles County prosecutors with four counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple murder and murder in the commission of rape, Los Angeles police said in a statement.

The statement said investigative and forensic work over the decades linked Richardson to the 1980 killings of Beverly Cruse, Debra Cruse and Kari Lenander in Los Angeles and the 1995 slaying of Trina Wilson in Inglewood.
