What I learned at the Farmers Market today...........
I had my mom sit at a picnic bench, while I took some things to the car. Across from the bench was a husband and wife, in their early '70's. I had on a political button, it's pink and states Solidarity and Women's Rights. Mom's button she was wearing, has Rosie the Riveter and states "I am woman and I vote." When I returned to collect my mom, the man looked at me & the pin (I began to cringe, because of what I expected to hear). But I didn't hear that, the man said "I paraded in Chicago, in the '70's for womens rights." He further added that he didn't understand why the ERA wasn't law by now.
We talked for a few minutes, learned he was a union stalwart, and Obama was getting his vote. The President was in town last week, I told the man I had gone to see him. Both he and his wife got the biggest smiles, which got even bigger when I showed them the pictures I had taken on Friday.
What I learned, what you expect, is often not what you get.
Went to the Farmers Market with my mom today..........
Mom is 82, lives with me & still enjoys cooking. Here in PA, if you're 60 or older the state gives you $20 in coupons to be used at PA farmers markets and stands. What we bought today:
90 yellow sweet banana peppers. Mom will make 50 stuffed peppers, she stuffs them with ground turkey sausage, and sauce. We will keep 10, she will give 10 each to my 3 brothers. The remaining 50 I will cut into strips and then freeze them to be used later.
Cost for peppers $8
20 tomatoes, most will be frozen & used for soups this winter. Cost $4
30 cucumbers for pickling Cost $4
2 dozen corn, 1 dozen we will eat over the next week. I will cut the corn on the other dozen & freeze it for soup. Cost $10
6 beets Cost $2
Total cost to mom $8

Just ran a few errands...........82 year old mother was pissed......
first stop was the Post Office. Outside were 2 men, with Lyndon LaRouche signs, some saying "impeach Obama" "Honk if you hate Obama". One picture of Obama had a Hitler's mustache painted on.
When I got into the Post Office, I informed both window clerks about the Supreme Court decision (one window clerk was my brother). They were both so happy, my brother said he prayed last night for this decision.
When I got into the car, a woman (65, just got medicare) came to my window. She wanted to know who these "freaks" were on the sidewalk. We touched base, about the fact that they were on public property, but in front of the Post Office, to make it look like it was government sanctioned. She worked for Obama in '08 and was going to work for him now. She didn't know about the SCOTUS decision, but was very happy.
As we left, we passed by the Lindies, and my mom said to them "I'm putting Obama up for sainthood, and may you head in the opposite direction."
I like how my mom can tell you to go to hell, nicely.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) has vetoed a Democratic-sponsored bill aimed at providing seventh-graders with a free HPV vaccine.
Lexington (S.C.) Patch reports that the measure picked up support across both sides of the partisan aisle, with a 63-40 House vote and 40-2 Senate vote in favor of passing the initiative.
Haley defended her Tuesday veto, calling the bill unnecessary and a "precursor to another taxpayer-funded healthcare mandate," the Charleston Post and Courier reports.
State Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-Bamberg, S.C.) sponsored the bill and blasted Haley's move, calling her decision one that "puts her own selfish political ambitions ahead of the people of South Carolina."
"This bill had bipartisan support and gives optional education and preventative vaccines to adolescents in an effort to thwart cervical cancer," said Sellers in a statement. "This is a common sense approach to a very serious problem. To call this measure unnecessary is demeaning and insulting to the heroic women who fight this cancer everyday. I am deeply disappointed that politics once again has prevailed over women's health.”
The governor's veto comes with its share controversy. The Anderson (S.C.) Independent Mail rewinds to Haley's 2007 tenure as a state representative, when she co-sponsored a bill authorizing mandatory HPV vaccination for seventh-grade girls. Haley eventually killed that bill on the grounds that it did not include an opt-out for parents, but Sellers' 2012 version would have given parents the ability to do so, Lexington (S.C.) Patch notes.
“It was a mistake then, I’ve said it’s a mistake now,” Haley said on Tuesday, according to the South Carolina Radio Network. “Now that I have a 14-year-old daughter, it is something that is very close to my heart in terms of what I’m going to do as a parent and what I want for my child.”

Now that Wisconsin voters have shown the rest of America how the unions have financially raped taxpayers for years, let us be sure to also remember their partners -- the locally elected officials of every borough, township, city and village in the United States who sat on the councils and school boards and voted for and signed whatever the unions wanted and got.
Kudos to those politicians who tried to hold the line but were outnumbered.

I am responding to Joann Prion's June 12 letter, "Unions' Partners." Her words that unions have raped the taxpayers for years is totally off base and out of touch with reality.
Within the state of Wisconsin, the money that Gov. Scott Walker took from union members was the amount of money that he awarded in tax breaks to big business. It is politicians who have assaulted and abused taxpayers, not unions.
Unions, specifically those representing public-sector workers, are reasonable. I have never seen a union advocate for tax increases so their members could have pay increases.
It is politicians like Gov. Tom Corbett who attack citizens. Gov. Corbett's refusal to allow local government to tax Marcellus Shale takes money away from the community for schools and infrastructure. Don't blame unions for this.
Gov. Corbett is giving Shell Oil a billion-dollar tax break. This is money that could be used for the benefit of communities. Who is going to pay for the added traffic and added pollution that this development will produce? Don't blame it on the unions.
Why are people so afraid of putting the blame right square where it belongs? Why have unions suddenly become the scapegoat for the bad that is happening?
Praise unions for the work they have done, and the work they will achieve. Don't spout what you hear on right-wing radio. It is false.

Just watched a news segment on Romney's..........
visit to Pennsylvania. Romney, Governor Corbett and a few other men (no women spotted), were all wearing tan front pleated chinos and either white or blue long sleeved, button down collar shirts.
The reason I noticed the clothing, is because they all looked like they walked off an ivy league campus in the mid '60's.
Also noticed that Governor Corbett, shouldn't wear front pleated pants, it really emphasized that he's beginning to look like Governor Chris Christy.
