GOP House approves huge fines for picketing (Michigan)

Michigan GOP at it again-

Lansing — Republicans in the Michigan House voted late Wednesday to make it easier for courts to shut down “mass picketing” demonstrations and fine protesters who block entrances to businesses, private residences or roadways.

Under the legislation, which Democrats decried as unconstitutional prior to the 57-50 vote, individuals who return to a disruptive demonstration already blocked by a court could face fines of up to $1,000 a day. Unions or other organizing groups could be fined up to $10,000 each day.

Michigan law already prohibits certain forms of mass picketing, but sponsoring Rep. Gary Glenn, R-Midland, said a spate of recent incidents make it apparent that “the current penalties are not sufficient to deter already-illegal activity.”

He noted reports that 39 people were arrested last month outside a Detroit McDonald’s “for blocking the entrance and preventing them from being able to conduct their business” during a protest against low wages. Glenn also cited an environmental protest outside the Midland home of Attorney General Bill Schuette in July.

But the proposal is “unnecessary, over-reaching, outrageous, oppressive and un-American,” said state Rep. Leslie Love, D-Detroit, telling her colleagues she was “particularly disturbed” because her African-American elders did not earn equal rights “solely through civil protest.”

Did Donald Trump tank Boeings stock because he was mad about a news article?

The Fix
Did Donald Trump tank Boeing’s stock because he was mad about a news article?

By Philip Bump December 6 at 1:50 PM

Shares of stock in aircraft manufacturer Boeing fell nearly $2 a share before markets opened on Tuesday.

https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=&w=1484

Were Boeing to lose a $4 billion contract, that would certainly cause people to be skeptical of future earnings. But this, as seems always to be the case with Donald Trump tweets, is not the full story.
(snip)

"Last year, we delivered 495 737s from our factory in Renton, Wash., to customers around the world," Muilenberg continued, noting that a third of the planes were sent to China. "This phenomenon would have been unimaginable when I started at the company in 1985."

Those are pointed comments. It was Trump, of course, who robustly criticized free trade during the general election. And it is Trump who, this week, seemed to threaten a trade war with China.

That story has a dateline of 7:30 Central time -- 8:30 Eastern. Trump's tweet came out a few minutes later.

We don't know that Trump was responding to the Tribune story. We do know that the last time he tweeted an out-of-the-blue opinion, about flag-burning, it was immediately after a Fox News segment showing students burning flags.

So The Donald is ticked off about comments the Boeing CEO made about free trade, and so Donald decides to tank Boeing stock.

Spike in hate crimes prompts special NY police unit

Source: CNN

An "explosion" in hate crimes since Election Day has prompted the creation of a special police unit to fight the uptick in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday.

The announcement coincided with an address at Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church, where Cuomo called for an end to the divisiveness that has gripped the country.

"The ugly political discourse of the election did not end on Election Day. In many ways it has gotten worse, [turning] into a social crisis that now challenges our identity as a state and as a nation and our people," he said.

President-elect Donald Trump wasn't specifically mentioned in his church address, but Cuomo has in the past criticized Trump and vowed in a New York Daily News op-ed that he would "reject the hateful attitudes that pervaded throughout the 2016 campaign."

Trump just got caught peeking at Melania’s ballot–and Twitter is having a field day

Source: US UNCUT

Donald Trump has become the laughingstock of Twitter for peeking at the ballot his wife, Melania, was filling out.

Earlier this morning, the GOP nominee and his wife went to their polling location to cast their ballots as crowds gathering booed them. During the actual voting process, Donald and Melania Trump are seen at the voting booth, while his Secret Service detail surrounds them and media snaps photos. Then, very briefly, in front of the entire world, Trump noticeably looked at his wife’s ballot before walking out of the booth.

Detroit Metro among airports DEA targets for cash grabs from travelers

Two years ago, Christelle Tillerson bought a one-way ticket to fly from Detroit Metro Airport to Los Angeles where she planned to purchase a semi-tractor truck using cash withdrawn from her boyfriend’s retirement savings.

When the Detroit woman arrived at the airport in Romulus on March 12, 2014, she was met by federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents who asked if they could search her bags. She explained she had “about $20,000” in her checked luggage and gave them permission to search it.

Tillerson didn’t know it, but she had targeted by the DEA after the agency “received information” that she was headed to Los Angeles on a one-way ticket.

Like hundreds of other travelers profiled and stopped by DEA agents at airports and train stations each year, Tillerson was about to have her money taken away from her by the government under the suspicion it was tied to drug trafficking.

Even though she was never criminally charged, Tillerson would have to sue the government if she wanted the $25,000 back that the agents found in her luggage.

West Virginia state Senate candidate, a veteran, brutally beaten

Source: MSNBC

West Virginia state Senate candidate Richard Ojeda was brutally beaten during a cookout Sunday — just two days before his primary — and nearly run over with a pickup truck, Ojeda told NBC News.

Jonathan Stuart Porter, 41, was in custody Sunday. State Trooper Zachary Holden told NBC News he was being held on suspicion of malicious assault, malicious attempted assault and felony destruction of property.

In an interview from his hospital room in Charleston, Ojeda, 45, a Democrat and military veteran whose primary contest is Tuesday, said he had been at a barbecue in the mountains about 60 miles southwest of Charleston when Porter asked for a bumper sticker.

Ojeda, who said he has known Porter since they were kids, placed one on the rear bumper of Porter’s truck. Then Porter asked for a second one on the vehicle’s front grill.

“That’s all I remember,” Ojeda said. “When I woke up, my head was on a tree stump covered in blood. Everyone was looking at me.”

Ben Carson: I Didn’t Want To Endorse Trump, But He Promised Me A Position

Source: Think Progress

Dr. Ben Carson, who endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy on Friday, appears less than enthusiastic about that decision. And the real reason the unsuccessful GOP presidential hopeful endorsed his former rival could be a violation of federal law.
Carson told the conservative online site NewsMax TV on Monday that he backed Trump based on a practical calculus.

“I didn’t see a path for [John] Kasich, who I like, or for [Marco] Rubio, who I like. As far as [Ted] Cruz is concerned, I don’t think he’s gonna be able to draw independents and Democrats unless has has some kind of miraculous change… Is there another scenario that I would have preferred? Yes. But that scenario isn’t available.” Pressed to clarify, Carson said he meant he’d prefer to have backed one of the other candidates.

Carson then said that Trump had promised him a role in his administration, “certainly in an advisory capacity.” Asked by NewsMax’s Steve Malzberg whether this meant a cabinet position, Carson declined to “reveal any details about it right now, because all of this is still very liquid.”

Federal law expressly prohibits candidates from directly or indirectly promising “the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy.” The penalty for violations could include fines or a year in jail — two years if the violation was willful.

Ouch- it is a felony under 18 USC 599 for a political candidate to offer a Federal Government position to a person in exchange for their political support.

Someone needs to call the F.B.I. and report this.

Sanders packs Breslin Center with turn out to vote message

Source: Lansing State Journal

EAST LANSING - Delegate counts and Super Tuesday results did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 10,000 people who came to see Sen. Bernie Sanders speak at Michigan State University's Breslin Center Wednesday evening.

Crowds composed primarily of young adults listened as Sanders leaned heavily on his messages of social and economic equality during his hour-long speech.

“People out there don’t want you to vote or to participate in the political process because they want to make all the decisions for you,” Sanders said. “They love the idea that in the last winter election in 2014, 63 percent of the American people did not vote.”

Michigan State University's BRESLIN CENTER, where over 10,000 people showed up in the cold to come see the next President.

I just watched Bernie give a magnificent speech, in which he:

1. Called for the RESIGNATION OF MICHIGAN GOVERNOR RICK SNYDER over the Flint Lead Scandal, the Aramark prison food scandal, the Veterans Health Care scandal, and all the other offenses against human beings.

2. Outlined a vision of a nation in positive growth, with equality for all, with hope and optimism.

3. Told the audience that "LOVE TRUMPS HATE".

God that was great.
I LOVE Bernie.
He's going to make a great President.

Ten THOUSAND people inside Breslin Center to listen to Bernie:

And I'm about 1,000th in line outside.
