Gov. Bullock (D. Montana): How Democrats Can Win in the West

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/05/opinion/steve-bullock-democrats-montana.html?ref=opinion

On the night that Hillary Clinton got 36 percent of the vote in Montana, I won re-election comfortably, running on progressive ideas and against an extremely wealthy Republican opponent. Ever since, national reporters have asked me whether Montana Democrats have some secret recipe, given that we’ve won the last four elections for governor, that might be used in national campaigns. I tell them yes, we do.

Above all, spend time in places where people disagree with you. Reach out. Show up and make your argument. People will appreciate it, even if they are not inclined to vote for you. As a Democrat in a red state, I often spend days among crowds where there are almost no Democratic voters in sight. I listen to them, work with them and try to persuade them.

Democrats as a national party have ceased doing this. This has to change. They should take a more expansive view of the America that exists beyond the confines of the Eastern Seaboard.

Nate Silver suggests the GOP strategy on the health care vote

If the bill quietly dies in the Senate this summer, for instance, it’s not clear that a vote taken in May 2017 will be at the top of voters’ minds in November 2018.

I suspect this is exactly what the GOP is planning. Give the far right a meaningless victory today, let the senate kill Trumpcare in the middle of summer when no one is paying attention, and hope that by election day 2018 everyone has forgotten about today's vote

let's stop using the word Obamacare - it's the ACA

Watching CNN; "house voting on Obamacare replacement bill". They should call it ACA.

WaPo: Bernie Sanders remains one of Americas most popular politicians

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2017/03/15/bernie-sanders-remains-one-of-americas-most-popular-politicians/?utm_term=.e562f1898f42

A fascinating new survey from Fox News asked Americans their opinions of a number of political leaders and politically relevant organizations. No elected official included in the survey had a larger net favorability — overall favorable views minus unfavorable ones — than Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), continuing Sanders’s strong showing in such polls.

Map of the former United States; repost from 3 months ago.

I posted this a few years ago as a lark, but now I think it is inevitable.

Notes:
1) I had trouble deciding if Mountainland and Midland should be one nation or two. I decided on two because I thought Colorado and Nebraska wouldn’t get along.

2) Hispanica may or may not decide to become part of Mexico.

3) Regarding Alaska; Russia invades Alaska after the collapse of the United States government. Canada counterattacks with the support of England, other Commonwealth nations, and whatever remains of NATO. After a few weeks of fighting, Russia and England come very close to a nuclear war. The United Nations then negotiates a partition similar to that of North and South Korea. The result is what is shown on the map.

4) All the scientists at Duke University, UNC, Rice, Vanderbilt, etc. are banished from New Christendom. They seek refuge in my country of South Florida. As a result the Republic of South Florida becomes the world’s leading center of scientific research.

Are Canadian drugs unsafe?

The senators who voted against the Canadian drug bill said they acted out of concern for safety. If the drugs were being imported from the Sudan or Burma then I might agree. But Canada? Does anyone believe that a pharmacy in Vancouver is less safe than a pharmacy in Seattle? There are Walmart stores with pharmacies in Canada, just like in the U.S.. And they are selling the same drugs from the same factories. Perhaps Canada's version of the F.D.A is completely corrupt and/or incompetent, but I doubt it. I have no qualms about assuming that Canada's standards are just as good as ours.

Expedia stole $350 from me.

I booked a flight from Los Angles to Fort Lauderdale using Expedia. It was one of their “bargain fares”. It was listed as a 5 hour flight for $260. By the time I finished typing my name, address, etc., the fare went up to $350. I bought it anyway. After paying, the itinerary showed a 9-1/2 hour flight with a 2 hour layover in Chicago. Customer service refused to give a refund or book me on another flight. Since I paid with a debit card instead of a credit card, I could not cancel the charge. I am warning everyone I know – “Use Expedia at your own peril”.
