Canadian journalists who covered Rob Ford offer tips on Trump

Americans would agree the US has never seen a politician quite like Donald Trump. Constant falsehoods, attacks on newspapers, over-the-top insults directed at individual reporters—these are things many in the US media haven’t had to deal with before. To Canadians, though, this type of media manipulation is all too familiar. For several years, former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford treated journalists in much the same way.

The similarities between how these two politicians have approached the media is uncanny, says Daniel Dale, a Toronto Star journalist who covered Ford when he was in office and is now writing about Trump from Washington. Both politicians repeatedly and directly attacked particular media outlets, used the media to rile up their base, personally attacked journalists, and claim everything reported about them is false. “This is all very familiar to me,” says Dale.

As stressful as it was to cover Ford, who passed away last March from cancer, the Canadian media now knows how to report on a post-truth, journalist-bashing politician and they have some ideas for their American counterparts struggling to keep up with Trump. The first piece of advice: Visuals speak louder than words.

Nevada GOP Chairman Laments That ‘Certain Groups’ Got More Time To Vote

Source: Huffington Post

“Last night, in Clark County, they kept a poll open till 10 o’clock at night so a certain group could vote,” Chairman Michael McDonald said at a rally for GOP nominee Donald Trump Saturday in Reno. “It wasn’t in an area that normally has high transition. The polls are supposed to close at 7. This was kept open till 10. Yeah, you feel free right now? Think this is a free or easy election?”

For a party in a state with a growing Hispanic population to describe that population as a “certain group” seems like an odd decision. But then, step back and think about the bigger picture: The chairman of a state party was complaining that election officials were being too flexible in allowing people to vote.

Speaking later, Trump likewise criticized the decision by election officials to keep polling locations open.

“Folks, it’s a rigged system,” he told the crowd, which responded with of cheers. “And we’re going to beat it. We’re going to beat it.”

Fearing a Trump presidency, they traveled from Europe to help Clinton's campaign

Thirty politically passionate millennials from the Netherlands who came to Philadelphia to help get out the vote for Hillary Clinton spent Saturday knocking on doors with like-minded canvassers.

Peter Black from Groningen said all the Dutch visitors are members of the Route 66 Association, a "liberal, progressive, Democratic" group of 25- to 33-year-old professionals from the Netherlands' D66 Party.

"We came partly out of curiosity about this election," Black said.

And they came partly out of fear of a Donald Trump victory, said Talitha Stam of Rotterdam. "If Hillary Clinton doesn't win, we are scared of the other option. He is dangerous, not just for America, but for our country and other countries as well."

3 laptops stolen from Clinton campaign worker's car; 'crime of opportunity'

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

Three laptops were stolen from the car of Hillary Clinton campaign worker in Northern Liberties on Friday night, according to police.

Police said four Clinton campaign workers left a restaurant on the 900 block of N. 2nd Street around 9:15 p.m. Friday and found that the back passenger wind ow of their 2016 Buick Enclave had been smashed. The men called police and said that three backpacks containing MacBook Pros and other items had been stolen, authorities said.

The car, with Michigan registration, had been parked on the 100 block of Brown Street, but Commissioner Richard Ross said it was not marked as a Clinton campaign vehicle.

He said police did not believe the crime was targeted because the bags were left in plain view, and that police "have no reason to believe that were in possession of any sensitive information." He did say the computers could have contained scheduling or personal information.

Republicans Threaten Lawsuits Over TV Ads Linking Them To Donald Trump

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON ― From the very beginning, Republican congressional candidates in moderate districts have been hesitant to embrace Donald Trump. Now, two weeks before Election Day, some of those Republicans are threatening to sue TV stations for running ads that link them to the GOP presidential nominee.

Five candidates ― Reps. Bob Dold (R-Ill.), Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), David Jolly (R-Fla.), John Katko (R-N.Y.) and Brian Fitzpatrick, a Pennsylvania Republican running for an open seat that’s currently occupied by his brother ― contend that certain commercials paid for by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee provide false or misleading information by linking them to Trump.

-snip-

Dold demanded the removal of an ad that claimed he was privately raising money to defeat Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The DCCC was referencing an event Dold headlined called “Beat Hillary at the Distillery.” Dold says the money only went to local candidates.

Fitzpatrick has also had his lawyer draft a cease and desist letter, taking issue with an ad that says the candidate “supports Donald Trump and his dangerous agenda for women.” While Fitzpatrick doesn’t refute claims that he wants to defund Planned Parenthood, his lawyer said that branding him as a Trump supporter threatens “substantial and immediate harm to the campaign and Mr. Fitzpatrick’s personal reputation.”

Trumpian tactics - suppression of free political speech. If every candidate can suppress his
opponent's ads because they cause harm - true or not - free speech goes out the window.

Hope the courts see through this one.
