Meta: Facebook's new name ridiculed by Hebrew speakers

Facebook's announcement that it is changing its name to Meta has caused quite the stir in Israel where the word sounds like the Hebrew word for "dead".

To be precise, Meta is pronounced like the feminine form of the Hebrew word.

A number of people have taken to Twitter to share their take on the name under the hashtag #FacebookDead.

The emergency rescue volunteers Zaka even got involved, telling their followers on Twitter: "Don't worry, we're on it".

Tucker Carlson Is Now Explicitly Pushing 'False Flag' Paranoia About Jan. 6

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on Wednesday teased his upcoming series about the U.S. Capitol riot that includes a suggestion that the pro-Donald Trump mob’s violence was a “false flag.”

The trailer for “Patriot Purge” takes Carlson’s previous reality-denying spin on the Trump-incited Jan. 6 insurrection to a chilling level.

The promo spot shows people warning that “the domestic war on terror is here” and “it’s coming after half of the country,” “the left is hunting the right,” and “false flags have happened in this country” and “one of which may have been Jan. 6th.”

The series will air on the Fox Nation streaming service starting Monday.

For Black and Latino gun owners, being armed "evens the playing field"

P.B. Gomez is a 23-year-old law student at the UC Berkeley School of Law interested in urban environmental justice policy. He's also the founder of the Latino Rifle Association (LRA), a politically progressive organization for Latino gun owners with left-leaning values who want to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

"Gun culture in the United States is largely toxic, and it's not welcoming," said Gomez. And he believes gun rights are for everyone: "I don't believe self defense, which is fundamentally about bodily autonomy, should be exclusive to people on the right politically."

The LRA website states membership is open to all racial groups so long as its mission and rules are respected. Since its formation in 2020, the LRA has attracted several hundred members across the U.S.

"Our biggest supporters have actually been leftists, have been socialists, progressives. You sort of have to have a distrust of authority. The police and the government aren't taking care of me, so I have to do things on my own," Gomez explained.

City's attempt to cut Texas man's grass ends with his death, police say

An attempt by Austin, Texas, officials to serve a search warrant and provide lawn care resulted in shots fired, an hourslong standoff, a house fire and a death, police said Wednesday.

Police officers and code enforcement officers arrived at a home at 9:16 a.m. to serve a nuisance search warrant, but could not make contact with the resident, Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said at an evening news conference.

The warrant was left at the door and contractors for the city's code enforcement began working on the lawn. About an hour later, the resident started shooting from inside the house, Chacon said.

"And they immediately backed off. They got all of the staff that was working on the house to safety and and a SWAT call was initiated for a barricaded subject," he said.

SWAT, mental health officers and a crisis negotiator arrived on scene, but could not get the man out of the home, leading to the lockdown of a nearby elementary school and the closure of several streets.

Long Beach school safety officer who shot teenager charged with murder

California authorities have filed murder charges against a former school safety officer who fatally shot an unarmed 18-year-old girl, a rare prosecution for an on-duty killing by an officer.

The Los Angeles district attorney announced Wednesday that Eddie Gonzalez, who had worked as a school officer in Long Beach, was facing one count of murder after he shot into a vehicle near a high school on 27 September, striking 18-year-old Manuela Rodriguez. The teenager, who went by Mona and had a five-month-old boy, was taken to a hospital and put on life support before she died a week later.

Gonzalez had been patrolling the area near Millikan high school, south of LA, when he observed an altercation between Rodriguez and another teenage girl, according to the district attorney’s office. Rodriguez then got into the rear passenger seat of a nearby car, and Gonzalez fired his handgun at the vehicle.

Cellphone video footage that circulated on social media appeared to show the officer firing as the car was fleeing.

'They are protecting the club not girls': More abuse claims hit North American soccer

The head coach of the Jamaica women’s national team has been accused by a former player of attempting to solicit sex from her during a recruiting process when he was in charge of the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s team.

The latest allegations against a prominent figure in North American women’s soccer come at a time when players around the world have spoken out about a culture of abuse and inappropriate behavior in the sport.

The detailed claims against Hubert Busby Jr date to his time as head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s team in 2010 and 2011 and include alleged sexual advances toward a player he was attempting to recruit. Busby denies the allegations. The Whitecaps also operate a men’s team in Major League Soccer and are considered a soccer powerhouse in Canada.

The allegations center on the recruitment of Malloree Enoch. She told the Guardian she initially contacted Busby in September 2010 seeking an administrative job with the Whitecaps women’s team. Enoch says Busby suggested she could play for the Whitecaps rather than work in team management.

Kyle Beach reveals he is the player suing the Chicago Blackhawks over sex assault

A former Chicago Blackhawks player came forward publicly as the man who filed a lawsuit against the hockey team over how the organization mishandled his sexual assault allegations.

In a televised interview Wednesday night, Kyle Beach revealed himself as the previously anonymous John Doe who filed a lawsuit in May against the team. According to his allegations, Beach had complained to team leaders back in 2010 that video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted him.

Upper management of the Blackhawks ignored his complaints until after the team won the Stanley Cup that season.

On Tuesday, an independent investigation confirmed Beach's claims. After the 107-page report was published, the team ousted two top officials who were there at the time of Beach's assault: Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman and senior director of hockey operations Al MacIsaac.

Beach, who is now a professional hockey player in Germany, said during the interview with TSN that he felt vindicated by the report.

"It was no longer my word against everybody else's," he said.

Boyfriend Broke Kid's Jaw Before House of Horrors Discovery

A Texas man charged with felony murder for allegedly beating his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son to death—then abandoning the victim’s three young brothers to fend for themselves in a filthy home alongside the decaying corpse—had subjected the children to regular physical abuse, breaking the middle child’s jaw in recent weeks, police said Wednesday.

Brian Ward Coulter, 31, killed the boy, Kendrick Lee, with his fists and feet around Thanksgiving 2020, according to a criminal complaint filed in Harris County District Court. Initial reports listed Kendrick’s age as 9, but authorities later said he was 8.

Coulter and the kids’ mom, Gloria Yvette Williams, 35, left the “dry… skeletal remains” behind in the Houston-area apartment they shared with the four kids, two of whom are believed to be on the autism spectrum, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference.

The surviving brothers, aged 7, 10, and 15, were only rescued from the “deplorable” home on Sunday after the 15-year-old reportedly texted his mom to say he couldn’t take it anymore, then called 911.

It is even worse than you think. And I wonder if the kids are truly ASD, or just so cowed by abuse that people think they are......

A growing number of Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate have ugly pasts

One top senatorial Republican candidate in Georgia is accused of threatening his then-wife’s life. Another in Pennsylvania could lose custody of his children during the campaign. One in Ohio is dating a subordinate on his campaign. And in Missouri, a leading candidate is the state’s former GOP governor, who resigned after a hairdresser with whom he had an affair accused him in gruesome detail of sexually assaulting her.

In a normal year, these candidates would be likely to be shunned by the Republican establishment, but the GOP has been put in the position of either supporting them or girding for their potential nomination, thanks to their ties to and even the support of former president Donald Trump.

And these races could determine which party controls the Senate next year. The Senate is split evenly, so Republicans need only a net gain of a single seat gain to retake majority control.

In the past, affairs and/or controversial remarks about sex have contributed to a number of downfalls of Senate candidates on both sides of the aisle. Just two years ago, Democrats lost a race in North Carolina with nominee Cal Cunningham, whose intimate texts with a woman who was not his wife burst into the open in the final days of the election. On the Republican side, a Trump-endorsed Roy Moore lost a Senate race in Alabama after allegations that he made sexual advances to teenage girls decades earlier.

A man gave a Nazi salute at a school board meeting to oppose mask rules. Ted Cruz defended it as a form of protest.

In a hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) pressed Attorney General Merrick Garland over his recent efforts to understand and curb the risk of violence at public school board meetings about coronavirus policies and race-based lessons.

Attempting to illustrate that the threats do not warrant Justice Department involvement, the Texas Republican referenced a letter from the National School Boards Association that listed examples. “They involve things like insults,” Cruz said. “They involve a Nazi salute — that’s one of the examples.”

Slamming his hands on dais and raising his voice, Cruz continued: “My God! A parent did a Nazi salute at a school board because he thought the policies were oppressive.”

The senator was referring to an August incident in which police removed a man from a Birmingham, Mich., school board meeting about a student mask mandate after officials said he flashed the Nazi salute and chanted “Heil Hitler.”
