The recent protests suggest, 2014 could have been the year that tensions between law enforcement officers and the people who they are charged with protecting peaked.
Looking back over some of the disturbing Raw Story reports from the last year shows why the public has become more and more skeptical of the men and women behind the badge.
1. Free speech and photography are not crimes.
Even as body cameras are becoming more popular, some officers still have a problem with being recorded. Like North Carolina Deputy Natalie Barber. She detained a retired United States Marine combat instructor, claiming her “safety” was threatened when he was inside his home recording how she handled a dispute between him and his neighbor.
A police officer in Brooklyn didn’t like being filmed so he gave Will Paybarah a ticket in March, telling him that “iPhones are being used as guns.” Officer Adolphus Cannon of Waller, Texas pepper-sprayed a Prairie View A&M University student who was recording him, and then offered to let him go if he didn’t release the video.

Revealed: The Arctic Ocean is releasing large volumes of methane

Researchers from Norway and Russia have found significant amount of the greenhouse gas methane is leaking from an area of the Arctic seabed off the northern coast of Siberia.

Researchers from Norway and Russia have found significant amount of the greenhouse gas methane is leaking from an area of the Arctic seabed off the northern coast of Siberia.
According to the team's report in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, the melting of permafrost on the seafloor of the Kara Sea is releasing previously-sequestered methane.
"The thawing of permafrost on the ocean floor is an ongoing process, likely to be exaggerated by the global warming of the world´s oceans," said study author Alexey Portnov at Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Climate and Environment (CAGE) at The Arctic University of Norway.

What would happen if the police in your town went on strike? Would it be like a scene from the propaganda film “The Purge”, where all of your once friendly neighbors become thieves and murderers? Or would the peaceful majority quickly begin to self organize to protect one another from the few in their communities who actually are thieves and murderers?
Every community is different and it is possible that different people would react differently, but for the most part, when these types of situations arise people actually don’t descend into madness.
There have been many examples throughout history of people defending their families and communities in a decentralized manner, and recently there have some many examples of this in the news, in various different parts of the world.
This week it was reported that police in Acapulco, Mexico went on strike and the people of the city, for the most part, do not seem to want them back. It turns out that without the transit police there is less traffic, and without the municipal police there has been no noticeable increase in crime.

The incoming leaders of the new Republican-controlled Congress have opted against reappointing Doug Elmendorf as head of the Congressional Budget Office, Bloomberg News reported Monday citing an "aide briefed on the decision." The move helps clear the way for so-called "dynamic scoring" -- a Holy Grail of conservative GOP budget wonks who don't like the way the costs of tax cuts are currently calculated.
Elmendorf previously served as an economist with the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve. He was appointed to lead the CBO in 2009 after Peter Orszag, the previous director, was nominated to run the White House Office of Management and Budget. After that, in 2011, Elmendorf was confirmed for a four-year term after Republicans took over the House of Representatives.
Supporters of Elmendorf have said that the fact that he was reappointed by congressional Republicans shows that he isn't spiking the numbers to favor establishment Republicans or the Obama administration.
Over the past few months Republicans have renewed their focus on changing the way CBO scores budgets if they were to take control of the Senate and keep control of the House of Representatives. Dynamic scoring calculates budgets through a controversial view that tax cuts both create economic growth and counter lost revenue. Currently the CBO does not use dynamic scoring.

War is terrible, no doubt. But as Paul Krugman writes in his column today, war is also terrible for the economy, contrary to popular mythology. The columnist offers countless examples from recent history of wars of aggression and choice where plunder and winning wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Vladimir Putin’s seizure of Crimea and Russia’s subsequent economic catastrophe is the most recent example. Closer to home, he cites, “our own neocons, whose acute case of Putin envy shows that they learned nothing from the Iraq debacle.”
The exceptions to the dictum that waging war makes you both poorer and weaker prove the rule, Krugman writes.
There are still thugs who wage war for fun and profit, but they invariably do so in places where exploitable raw materials are the only real source of wealth. The gangs tearing the Central African Republic apart are in pursuit of diamonds and poached ivory; the Islamic State may claim that it’s bringing the new caliphate, but so far it has mostly been grabbing oil fields.
The point is that what works for a fourth-world warlord is just self-destructive for a nation at America’s level — or even Russia’s. Look at what passes for a Putin success, the seizure of Crimea: Russia may have annexed the peninsula with almost no opposition, but what it got from its triumph was an imploding economy that is in no position to pay tribute, and in fact requires costly aid. Meanwhile, foreign investment in and lending to Russia proper more or less collapsed even before the oil price plunge turned the situation into a full-blown financial crisis.
